  • The Antidote Of Commitment
Indecisiveness comes down to an intolerance of uncertainty, and often to informational overload. In our modern, technologically advanced world, we’re constantly bombarded with an endless set of options in all spheres of life. We’re also saturated with all the information we come across on a daily basis, and this makes it hard to decide on things because we’re always looking for a better choice. We can consciously decide, however, to embrace imperfection and take on risks in the service of achieving what we care about.
Another way to tackle information overload is to ascertain what you need to know in order to make a decision, and identify the outcome you’re looking for. Then, narrow down possible decisions and take a leap of faith by choosing any because the opportunity cost involved becomes very low.

  • The Basic Steps
Marsha Linehan has come up with a comprehensive, six-step model of validation that we can use when listening to others. Each step in this model relies on the previous one. One can’t jump from step 1 to step 6; they must follow each step in the same order to validate someone in the best, most reassuring way possible.

  • Let's Shoot Some Hoops!
Other methods of saying no include planting preemptive seeds, emphasizing how you are tied to other people and can’t act independently, reflecting and acknowledging, referencing the fact that you can’t do everything at once, resisting the moment where you want to insert an addendum or caveat, creating hoops for people to jump through and themselves say yes to, baiting and switching with related or unrelated tasks, keeping it nonpersonal and focused on the specific circumstance, and passing the buck to someone who appears to be able to solve the problem at hand much better than you.

  • Knowing Thyself
Your identity and relationship with boundaries are inextricably linked. Those with poor boundaries often struggle with them because they have never truly reflected upon what it is that they want. On the other hand, rigid boundaries are a sign of fear and insecurity about the world and its potential for causing pain to us. Our identity forms the basis for our values, and our values are instrumental to our boundaries. Only by cultivating an awareness of what our values are can we start to build healthy boundaries.

  • Self-Verification
For every negative trait a person sees in him/herself, the key is for you to be accepting and considerate. Occasionally, you may run across a situation where someone’s self-perception varies vastly from their reality. In these instances, it’s worth asking yourself what your overall goal is—to be better socially, or to burst someone’s bubble. The answer to this question may guide your actions.

  • Models In Brief
Among the innumerable approaches that exist, we talk about the Pareto Principle (80/20 ratio), thinking about secondary consequences, distinguishing between feeling and thinking, satisficing (satisfy + suffice), prioritizing motion over planning, and addressing Murphy’s Law (whatever can go wrong, will go wrong).

  • The Comic Triple
One comedy technique that relies on mental imagery is the comic triple. Here, you basically describe something using three adjectives, two positive, and one highly negative, in that order. Alternatively, X, Y, and opposite of X and Y. We generally expect a third related adjective after two consecutive ones, but an unrelated descriptor completely throws our audience off. The comic triple works because of the misdirection and surprise.

  • Validation is One of the Clearest Ways to Say You Care
Many people tend to confuse sympathy, empathy, and validation, and there is indeed significant overlap between the three concepts. However, sympathy is when we see other’s experiences through our own lens and react accordingly. When empathizing, we try to relate to other’s experiences the way they are experiencing them. Lastly, validation is merely expressing your belief that someone else’s experience is inherently valid.
