  • Cognitive Biases
Your perception is biased. How you understand the world around you is probably biased because of how the brain jumps to conclusions. These types of jumps are called cognitive biases. They seek to create a story out of as little information as possible, in order to avoid uncertainty. Battling cognitive biases involves being able to tell stories in reverse, slow down, and shift your focus to questions instead of declaratory statements.

  • Self Assessing
There are many different reasons why so many of us have poor boundaries, to begin with. One of the most common ones is suffering from childhood trauma, as this is where beliefs are formulated and solidified, for better or worse. Children who did not feel safe growing up or had their boundaries routinely violated are bound to internalize the lack of self-worth that others have projected onto them. Our cultures in general also tend to valorize sacrifice and martyrdom at the expense of personal happiness. Though we may have been disadvantaged in terms of learning about boundaries, it is nevertheless important to recognize that enforcing and communicating boundaries is solely our responsibility.

  • The Block of Self-Doubt
The mental block of self-doubt can show up in the form of imposter syndrome, where we choose to listen to our negative self-belief rather than the objective evidence of our success. We could be the best at what we do, yet some of us suffer from a nagging suspicion that our successes are a result of pure chance, and that fate, not merit, has made us successful. As such, you might fear being discovered for the incompetent self you really are.

  • Warmth and Confidence
We haven’t, however, looked into what is really the glue that binds people to you. When it comes down to it, what are the things that really make a person likable? Think about the people you have known and liked. Why did you like them? Why do you think others like you?

  • More Complex Riddles
Analytical riddles are more challenging than situational ones because instead of shifting perspectives, they require you to carefully analyze information to arrive at conclusions. This is the classic comparison of divergent versus convergent thinking. It might be easier depending on your proclivities, but often, the devil is in the details.
Five men are walking together when it starts to rain. Four of them start walking quickly, while the fifth doesn’t. Yet he stays dry, and the other four get wet. They all arrive at their destination at the same time. How?
A window cleaner is cleaning windows on the twenty-fifth floor of a skyscraper when he slips and falls, yet isn’t harmed despite not wearing any safety equipment. How?

  • Where Did This Come From?
Children who don’t have control over their own bodies, personal space, emotions, or behavior may understandably feel confused and worthless, maybe even learning that they don’t deserve to fight for or demand better treatment. Such a child may grow into an adult who doesn’t even believe that they have a right to themselves, to say “no,” to want what they want. This can easily lead to a host of mental health problems, substance abuse, poor relationships, and more.

  • How to Ask For and Get What You Want
How do you ask for what you want? Well, you already know how. But we don’t for various reasons, the first of which is that they should have known. They should have been able to read our minds and understand and anticipate our needs. Yes, in fairy tales, but not in reality.

  • What is Half of Half?
Finally, what’s half of half? 25 percent. What’s half of that? 12.5 percent. What happens when you get to infinitesimal numbers? Do you ever reach zero? Nope. But is that reflective of reality? Nope. That’s what Zeno’s paradoxes sought to explain: what seems to be apparent and obvious on paper often has no bearing to reality. Once again, the map is not the territory. Zeno’s paradoxes play out at the interface between math and life, between concept and reality. Importantly, they may show us how uncomfortable the fit really is: what can seem “intuitively” correct can be shown to be completely wrong mathematically, statistically or theoretically. Could it be that the conception of “infinity” itself is flawed, and so every story based on it will eventually contain strange paradoxes like these?

  • Think On Your Feet
Sometimes, despite knowing full well that we must create motion, we are unable to do it. Sometimes our minds go blank. The next couple of sections deal with this specifically—how can you think more quickly on your feet? This requires practice; no one who manages it consistently is truly born with such a quick wit. And so how do you practice it? With free association, by simply taking a word and naming a few words or concepts that it reminds you of. The important part is to train your brain’s quick response reflex and break through any mental filters you might possess. You can also choose two words and relate them with a brief story, or flip to random words in the dictionary and use them to create a story.

  • Perspective Isn't Reality
Your perspective isn’t reality. It represents your subjective and unique worldview, but it’s not objective, it’s not reality, and it is destined to be skewed in terms of your experiences. Some of these experiences are solidified in what are known as schemas and heuristics, which are the frameworks you use to organize and understand the world.
