  • All Hail Conan - O'Brien, not the Barbarian
For a role model on how to draw information out of people, look no further than late-night talk-show hosts. Their sole job is to make a celebrity, often no funnier than you or I, appear immensely charming and intelligent. That’s a tough task sometimes. Think about the energy, focus, attention, and listening they employ to make this happen. That’s what is possible.

  • Fast Fashion - Good Economics or Exploitative?
Imagine you’re at a get-together of friends and are introduced to someone new, and you strike up a conversation with them. You compliment them on their cool shirt, and they tell you how surprisingly cheap it was and what a good deal they got on it. You make a lighthearted comment about how it was probably made in a sweatshop somewhere, like so much of our clothing today. The other person laughs but says, “Well, let’s hope not. But, not all sweatshops are bad.”

  • An Example of Intentional Thinking

  • Setting Up Personal Boundaries
Personal boundaries are limits we place for ourselves and others in our interactions with others. They define the kinds of behavior that we are both comfortable and not comfortable with. However, the process of setting up boundaries can go awry if we choose boundaries that are either too harsh or too permeable. For instance, rejecting intimacy altogether is a sign of the former, while being too afraid to speak up for yourself is an example of the latter.

  • A Man Walks Into a Bar...
Situational riddles are those that involve some bizarre circumstances that have taken place. Your job is to account for or explain why the situation materialized in that particular way by challenging assumptions one commonly holds. The lowest hanging fruit in terms of solutions or reasoning almost never applies, so it’s up to you to deduce what’s really going on.

  • Popularity, Motivation, and Success
Our first dive into the finer points of social intelligence is all about how to be more likable and popular. If you think about this question in the context of evolution, you might assume it has to do with some kind of standing within a tribe. And to be quite honest, you’d be correct, and this shows how close we still are to our so-called primitive ancestors. On a humorous note, we can use high-schoolers as a proxy for these ancestors, because high-schoolers are far more concerned with social standing and status, and are somewhat less sophisticated in their evaluations of such.
A couple of the most powerful predictors in who will be likable and popular are the simple motivation and sensitivity to such factors. In other words, those who want to be popular, and also can tell the difference between popular and unpopular kids, will be successful. You can say the same about people wanting a better job, or wanting to learn to play the piano, for example—if they want to do it, and they are sensitive to what makes a good versus bad piano player, they surely stand a better chance—but it’s a bit surprising to hear that simple social standing and likability follows the same rules.

  • BLUE Your Thoughts
This abbreviated version of cognitive behavioral therapy is effective—changing your thoughts by pointing out inaccuracies and correcting them. This is known as the BLUE process: “B” stands for blaming myself, “L” is looking for bad news, “U” means unhappy guessing, and “E” represents exaggeratedly negative thoughts. Once you identify which of those you are engaging in, you then replace the BLUE thought with a true thought—one representative of reality.

  • You Wanna Try Some Role Play?
Instant role-playing is a technique that you can fall back on. This is perhaps one of the easiest tricks mentioned so far. The trick generally involves both of you taking up some generic roles and playing them out for comedic relief. There are four steps to consider here. First, compliment the other person on some quality that they have, like being a great navigator. Then, assign them a role based on this quality, say being like Magellan. This is the role they’ll play, that of a renowned navigator. Simply follow this up with interesting questions about navigation (“Which continent did you enjoy discovering most?”) and pull them into the role play.

  • The One About Infinity
The infinite is one of the most confusing concepts to grasp. The truth is, in reality, things beyond a certain point of frequency or amount (even money) cease to hold any meaning for us. We just can’t imagine or visualize them, and thus they become meaningless. And yet, playing with this concept and understanding it a little better will help stretch your thinking and expand your mind. Taking a subject out of the ether and examining it in a reality-based and consequential way can help you extract a few lessons on extremely big, and extremely small, probabilities, and understand why a mathematical construct like 1/3 cannot truly be expressed as a decimal.
Any discussion of the infinite must begin with the thought experiment of Lucretius’ spear. If you contend that the universe if infinite, and then you walk right up to the edge (first of all, what would the edge even constitute), and then you throw a javelin, then what would happen? Would it bounce off something? Would it disappear? Would it just keep sailing because the universe is indeed infinite? What exactly would take place? Thinking through this abstraction makes clear that we have to suspend reality sometimes and redefine what we think is possible. You might even find that you have been asking wrong questions all along by not accounting for what you didn’t consider.

  • Better Answers Come From Better Questions
Of course, the tried and true way of directly getting deeper with people is to ask better questions. The simple truth is that most questions we use are surface level, and thus will only return surface-level responses. Here are a few guidelines for more piercing questions that will create more fertile ground for real substance: ask open-ended questions (don’t ask for facts, ask for the analysis and reaction associated with the facts), go beyond assumptions (what are you missing in your own analysis?), get all sides of the story (the more perspectives the better), use follow-up questions (don’t interject your own thoughts), get comfortable with dead air and in fact utilize it, and encourage people to come up with their own insights (so how did that change your opinion on things?).
