The passengers on the bus watchedsympathetically as the attractive young woman with the white cane made her waycarefully up the steps. She paid the driver and, using her hands to feel thelocation of the seats, walked down the aisle and found the seat he’d told herwas empty. Then she settled in, placed her briefcase on her lap and rested hercane against her leg.

一位年轻貌美的女士，拄着白色手杖小心翼翼地踏着梯级走上公车，乘客们充满同情地看着她。她付了车费，用手摸到座位的方向，然后沿着过道走过去，找到司机告诉她的那个空位。接着，她坐了下来，把公文包放在大腿上，手杖靠腿搁着。

It had been a year since Susan,thirty-four, became blind. Due to a medical misdiagnosis she had been renderedsightless, and she was suddenly thrown into a world of darkness, anger,frustration and self-pity. Once a fiercely independent woman, Susan now feltcondemned by the terrible twist of fate to become a powerless, helpless burdenon everyone around her. “How could this have happened to me?” she would plead,her heart knotted with anger.
