In this episode of the Powerful Stories podcast, I talk to businesswoman and entrepreneur, Alex Fevola. Alex started her career as a single mum doing it all, and has now just celebrated 10 years as an entrepreneur at the top of her game. Through it all, self-belief has been her superpower. 

What began 10 years ago as helping other women to step into their power by transforming them through makeup and photography, evolved into a successful brand, Runway Room, with this same mission at its core. In addition to having written a bestselling book, Silver Linings, that has had several print reruns, Alex is currently planning the expansion of Runway Room into a national and soon-to-be-global brand.

[2:02] Alex shares where her journey began and how she found her power after finding herself a single mother after losing her partner, when a sense of surivival kicked in and created her hunger for success. She talks about her early photography career, and how it evolved to what is now Runway Room.

[6:32] Alex says that other women can use self-belief to translate their dreams into reality by truly knowing and understanding their craft or product, and genuinely believing in it. She says that sharing your genuine passion and knowledge is a recipe for success.

[8:41] Alex shares that she has not always possessed the confidence she has now – in fact, throughout her early career and how she felt like a fraud and felt like people didn’t take her seriously. She reveals that it took a long time for her to feel confident and stop fearing judgement BUT she was able to retain her belief because she knew what she was doing was genuine. 

[10:16] On being the face of the brand and interacting on a grass roots level with her customer as the brand founder. Alex worked six days a week in her stores for several years, and one benefit of this was receiving invaluable direct feedback from the customers; she credits this close connection with her customer as creating a line of ‘movers’. 

[10:55] Alex opens up about the motivation for sharing her story and writing her bestselling book, Silver Linings. She responds to the idea that people were surprised that she had the talent to write it, and the thousands of messages she has received from women in response. 

[16:13] How Alex’s teenage daughter, Mia, felt about her sharing their story publicly, and how today she is an empowered young woman. 

[19:33] Opens up about managing life with four children including one still under five, while still running her successful business. She says that balance doesn’t exist, instead it’s more about juggling the priorities depending on what needs her attention on any given day. 

[20:56] Alex talks about her next powerful steps, including taking Runway Room national via plans to partner with a national retailer, in addition to launching the brand into the UK in April 2023 – and potentially writing another book in the future.
