A small, tight-knit southeast Kentucky community has been reeling after their sheriff was arrested for the killing of a prominent district judge in his chambers Thursday – spurring residents to wonder what could have triggered the shooting and prompting calls for better courthouse security. 

Letcher County Sheriff Shawn M. Stines, 43 - a man whose role made him responsible for judges’ personal security - gunned down District Judge Kevin Mullins, 54, at the Letcher County courthouse in Whitesburg, according to Kentucky State Police.

In a bombshell development, the trial of Donna Adelson, accused in the 2014 murder-for-hire killing of Dan Markel, went off the rails on the first day of jury selection after her lead attorney, Dan Rashbaum of Miami, withdrew over conflicts of interest. 

Rashbaum represented Adelson's son, Charlie Adelson, who was convicted last year on murder charges and sentenced to life in prison. Donna Adelson opted to hire Rashbaum represent her despite the fact that her legal needs may be at odds with those of her son, who has an appeal pending with the 1st District Court of Appeal. 

After Rashbaum’s move Tuesday afternoon, Leon Circuit Judge Stephen Everett announced that the trial will be continued and that prospective jurors would be sent home. 

In light of this, tonight we look at the current state of attorney-client privilege.

New videos of interviews related to the investigation into the disappearance and death of Madeline "Maddie" Soto were released last week by the Orange County Sheriff's Office. 

The videos show detectives questioning both Maddie Soto's mother, Jenn Soto, and her accused killer, Stephan Sterns. 

Madeline was first reported missing on Feb. 26 after she didn't make it to school that day, and her body was found in rural Osceola County on March 1. About two months later, Sterns – her mom's boyfriend – was charged with first-degree murder after investigators determined that the teenager was likely already dead before the school bell rang that day. Sterns was arrested two days before Maddie's body was found in a field.

Sean "Diddy" Combs was denied bail again on Wednesday, Sept. 18, a day after a federal judge in Manhattan remanded him to await trial at a jail in Brooklyn. 

The rapper was initially denied bail during his arraignment in Manhattan’s federal court on Tuesday, Sept. 17, and remanded to jail. A different judge denied his request for bail on Wednesday. C

ombs’ legal team promptly appealed the judge’s decision to deny bail, and returned to court the following afternoon. In a Sept. 17 letter to the judge, Combs' lawyers described conditions at Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn as "horrific" and "not fit for pre-trial detention." 

Now more lawsuits are being filed.

Attorneys for Shanna Gardner continued to argue in court that she should be released on bond ahead of her trial in the murder-for-hire plot 

Shanna Gardner is accused of plotting to kill her ex-husband, Jared Bridegan, with the help of her second husband Mario Fernandez and Henry Tenon. 

Police say Tenon placed a tire on a Jacksonville street, causing Bridegan to stop with his young daughter in the car, before he fired several times at close range killing Bridegan. 

Tenon has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the death of Jared Bridegan.  

Prosecutors allege that Tenon was paid from a trust fund funded by Gardner’s parents. Judge London Kite has yet to rule on whether to grant Gardner’s latest request for bond. She’s due back in court Sept. 23 for another hearing. 

Gardner and Fernandez Saldana face the death penalty
