This week’s Torah portion is “Toledot.″ 106 verses, Yitzchak, Rivka, Yaakov, Esav, zero positive mitzvot, zero negative mitzvot, but numerous matters that we can learn from the parasha. We call the parasha “the generations (or chronicles) of Yitzchak″ and so we will learn the history of Yitzchak.
This week’s Torah portion is Chayei Sarah. We are going to study it almost exclusively with a single commentator – Rav Shlomo Wolbe, among the leaders of the Musar Movement. The focus of this movement, which began in Lithuania in the 19th century, was self-improvement through refinement of one’s character. While at the University of Berlin, the young Wolbe became religiously observant and would go on to learn at the Mir Yeshiva in Belarus. While there, he would derive inspiration from Rav Yerucham Levovitz, the legendary mashgiach ruchani, or spiritual advisor, at the yeshiva.
This week’s Torah portion is Vayeira. We continue to see Avraham’s avinu’s outlook expressed and take hold in the world. We are talking about a fascinating and multi-faceted parasha. It would have been nice if even one of the stories that appear in this parasha could have found its way into the legalistic book of Leviticus.
Chasidut, the Chasidic outlook on life, says we should “live with the times″ – not only study the Torah portion of the week but live it. Chasidim call this week “the truly joyful week″. Why? Because parshat Bereishit begins with joy, with the creation of the world, but the end is not so joyful; humanity begins to sin. Parshat Noach describes the flood, and that’s sad, but it ends in joy – Avraham is born. But this is the truly joyful week; from beginning to end, we walk with Avraham avinu, our father Abraham .
