Talk Horse

Recorded live on the morning of Derby Day, this special episode of Talk Horse with Pippa and Tristan features showjumper and breeder Shane Breen, speaking to us from his own front room, right beside the famous Hickstead arena. We chat with Shane just hours before the Al Shira'aa Hickstead Derby to explore what it means to compete on home ground, the bumpy path to coupling up with Chloe Bunn (daughter of Hickstead founder Douglas Bunn), and his progression from Pony European silver medallist to member of the Senior Irish National Team.

Over the years, Shane has built an impressive international career, with Grand Prix victories at Lummen, Monaco and Dublin in 2019. That journey reached a major milestone in 2022, when he finally won the Hickstead Derby on Can Ya Makan, a triumph that came on his 17th attempt.

In this episode, Shane discusses the pride and pressure of jumping at home, the strategy behind Derby Day, and what it takes to sustain a top-level career in showjumping, all while raising a family at Hickstead.

We LOVE hearing from you.

Welcome back to the second of our Talk Horse summer specials.

Recorded live at Hickstead on the morning of Derby Day, this episode takes you right to the beating heart of British showjumping. We’re joined by Lizzie Bunn, Show Director of the Al Shira’aa Hickstead Derby Meeting and Managing Director of the All England Jumping Course, for a rare and revealing conversation.

From the eye-watering sums paid for top international horses, to the complicated history of the Bunn family, Lizzie lifts the lid on what really goes into keeping this world-famous showground galloping. We talk about the intense build-up to Derby Day, the pressure, the pageantry and the fun behind the scenes.

She’s also best friends with Pippa Funnell… So expect some fishy tails from their long friendship. It’s emotional, funny, and full of the kind of insider detail only Lizzie can share.

A must-listen for anyone who’s ever dreamed of clearing the Derby Bank or just wondered what it takes to run the most iconic arena in the country.

We LOVE hearing from you.

Talk Horse proper will be back soon. But while we brew that up, enjoy the first of our special episodes, recorded earlier this summer, where we sit down with broadcasting legend Angela Rippon to explore her lifelong love of horses. Whether you know her from Strictly Come Dancing or the Nine O’Clock News, this is yet another fascinating side to the incredible Angela.

From her early passion for horses to training as a jockey and even writing the book on it, Angela shares how equestrian life has shaped her world alongside a remarkable career in television. Expect riding adventures, heartfelt stories and reflections on how horses have kept her grounded both on and off screen.

Angela also lets us in on her Strictly secrets and her ongoing work with animal welfare charities. Plus, Pippa and Tristan explore the very important question… how do you name a horse?

We LOVE hearing from you, so please keep spreading the word and tell all your horsey friends about us!
