Tamarindo podcast is a Latina-hosted podcast that discuses Latine culture, politics, and personal-development. It is hosted by Brenda Gonzalez and Delsy Sandoval who are both based in Los Angeles. At the intersection of advocacy and self-care, we discuss culture from a progressive Latina lens including political issues, mental health and well-being, and personal development. Our guests are changemakers advancing justice, culture-makers breaking barriers, or healers including therapists and health practitioners promoting the wellbeing of Latinos.
Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.
We explore how friendships are important for our overall well-being by discussing how our relationships with friends have evolved since the pandemic. We also talk about how to approach friendship breakups.
We are joined by guest co-host José Richard Aviles, a multimedia artist, Urban Planner, and Social Worker based out of Los Angeles. As a former organizer, and a current artist, Aviles is interested in the intersections between space and justice, laughter and resistance, and the magic of the stage. Currently, Aviles is promoting their first published collection of poems, Semilla and developing a new poetry EP, "La Carta Que Nunca Envie" , an homage to Juan Gabriel and the countless lovers that are hidden in the lyrics. "Lo que se ve no se pregunta" - Juan Gabriel.
We reference this LA times article: ‘In the Heights’ is the rare Latino blockbuster. Three Times writers on what that means https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/story/2021-06-11/latino-gap-in-the-heights-latinos-lin-manuel-miranda

In this episode, we talk about how centering ourselves can get in the way of community building. We speak to Adi Mendiola Barreto (he/they), a 2nd generation Mexican and Puerto Rican, trans and non-binary, speaker, advisor, consultant, and strategist, about the work they are leading to challenge and shape people’s perspectives on LGBTQ+ issues. Adi shows us why self-divestment work is important, and challenges us to do deep introspective work as we step into allyship so we can all show up better for one another.

Environmental racism is real. On this episode of Tamarindo, we talk to environmental justice lawyer Claire Woods about how Black and Brown communities face the brunt of many environmental justice issues, the connection to racism, and what we can do to help. During the episode she mentions a few organizations we can follow to get more informed and involved with environmental justice issues including East Yard Communities for Environmental Justice, and Center for Community Action and Environmental Justice.
Claire Woods is the Senior Attorney and Director of Environmental Justice Policies and Programs at Greenfield environmental. Previously, as a senior attorney at the Natural Resources Defense Council, Claire led litigation and advocacy efforts to secure safe drinking water, curb air emissions, protect species, and maintain critical environmental protections for communities. Claire started her environmental justice work over ten years ago in the U.S. Department of Justice where she represented the United States in lawsuits to enforce the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act. If you’d like to learn more about Claire, you can read her feature at The Little Market.
Ana Sheila also mentions Lanzate Launch Latinx, a 10 week holistic coaching program and accelerator launching in July. They are accepting applications through June 29th. To learn more and apply, go to https://www.launchlatinx.co/

This week on Tamarindo, we are re-visiting a very special episode where Ana Sheila shared her coming out story and tells us a bit about her relationship to her queer identity. This episode first aired in 2019, but it’s one of our favorites.

The latest Tamarindo episode is about learning how to embrace our inner señora. We explore how aging and ageism is reflected in society, unpack the harmful messages especially women receive around getting older, and share ways we can all work on our relationship with aging whether we’re 25, 35, or over 50. Healing our communities is an intergenerational job y’all!
We reference a report from AARP on Latinx attitudes on aging you can read more about here, some data on retirement trends among Latinos here and a report on age related workplace discrimination that you can read about here.

We speak to Mónica Ramírez, attorney, author and activist, about what motivates her to do more than enough (a lot more than enough!) to stand up for migrant women and her community. She is the founder of Justice for Migrant Women and co-founder of Alianza Nacional de Campesinas, The Latinx House, and Poderistas, and an overall badass!
Trigger Warning: This episode talks about sexual violence. Below is a list of resources for anyone that may need support:

Before we speak to Mónica, we catch up on the latest in Latinx chisme. We reference this think piece that does an excellent job of recapping the Flamin’ Hot Cheetoh’s controversy over the creator of the loved snack. Note, that since we recorded, this is the latest on the Flamin' Hot saga. We also suggest Brenda’s piece on Hip Latina about the upcoming Black-ish spinoff, Brown-ish.

The program from Justice for Migrant Women, National Migrant and Seasonal Head Start Program, Latinx Therapy, and the Eva Longoria Foundation, with funding from The Workers Lab Innovation Fund and Collective Future Fund, will pilot the use of technology to engage farmworkers and bring them together in virtual support groups to support healing, teach workers their rights, build community connections, and inspire change. Listeners can learn more about Healing Voices and how to support the work at Justice for Migrant Women through the website: https://justice4women.org, or find them on Instagram and Twitter at: @mujerxsrising.
More about our guest: Mónica has received numerous awards, including Harvard Kennedy School’s first Gender Equity Changemaker Award, Feminist Majority’s Global Women’s Rights Award and the Smithsonian’s 2018 Ingenuity Award. She was named to Forbes Mexico’s 100 Most Powerful Women’s 2018 list and TIME Magazine included her in its 2021 TIME100 Next list. Mónica is also an inaugural member of the Ford Global Fellowship.

On this episode of Tamarindo, we are joined by Lizette Trujillo, mom and community advocate for transgender youth and families. She shares how raising her trans son has changed her life and how leading with love made her into the fierce advocate and activist she is today. This powerful conversation happens as hundreds of heartbreaking anti trans bills are being passed across the country and our trans community are being denied basic human rights. We hope this conversation inspires you to open your hearts and get more involved in supporting our trans community. You can learn more about the importance of allyship on Lizette's podcast "I Stand by You with Lizette and Drew".
