Tamarindo is taking a week off to recharge our pilas. So we invite you to revisit this episode to help you uncover your energy chupacabras and ways to reduce stress.
This first aired fall 2019, so you’ll hear us talk about the Democratic debates...ah...remember when the only pandemic we had to worry about was Tr*mp?
We learn why stress is not ALL bad but why it’s also more harmful than we think. We recognize that many of the stressors BIPOC folks face, like financial stress or discrimination, are not ones we can easily change without policy changes. That said, there are a few things we can do to start changing our relationship with stress like changing our mindset and discovering our #energychupacabras and what to do about them.
We include a technique used by the stress management company @Baskandbeing
You can learn more about them here https://baskandbeing.com/

On this episode we talk curly hair maintenance and manifest a win for Newsom on the California recall (Ana Sheila and Brenda recorded on election day).
We talk to Dani Fernandez, an LA based writer and actress that we adore. She wrote in the best-selling book The Good Immigrant USA and has hosted for E! News, Nerdist, CW, and Disney. She can be seen in animated form, playing herself, in Disney’s Ralph Breaks the Internet.
Learn how Dani is making the nerd space more welcoming for people of color, and how she delights us with her bold tweets centered on mental health and representation.
More about our guest: Dani Fernandez recently appeared in multiple episodes of Syfy's “The Great Debate" and wrote on the upcoming CW show "The Girls on the Bus”, The Netflix show "Incarnate", as well as the HBO Max show “MORE”. She also sold a half-hour comedy pilot based on her life, "1% Happy" to HBO Max. In January she hosted the first annual Critics Choice Super Awards on the CW.

We talk to two women that are using their voice to ensure that the lived experiences of people of color in our community are seen and valued through storytelling and policymaking. Specifically, we talk about police brutality and the violence that Latinx folks experience as a direct result of white supremacy and the need to humanize experiences with thoughtful reporting.
We have Eunisses Hernandez, a policy advocate for communities most devastated by criminalization, the war on drugs, and mass incarceration. She is the Director & Co-Founder of LA Defensa, in LA. We also speak to Nicole Chavez, from CNN’s Race and Equality team. Nicole reports about how race relations and inequality impact the lives of people of color. She reported extensively about the aftermath of the 2019 Walmart shooting in El Paso, Texas -- the deadliest attack on Latinos in modern history.
We reference this LA Times article as we talk about “Real Women Have Curves”: https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/story/2021-09-12/patricia-cardoso-real-women-have-curves-academy-museum

How is the Latinx community consuming media? What progress have we made in Latinx representation? We teamed up with Nielsen to delve into these questions on this episode of Tamarindo.
We partnered with Nielsen, a research company that fuels the media industry with the most accurate understanding of what people listen to and watch. We speak to Stacie M. de Armas, an inclusion & identity researcher, consumer behaviorist, and subject matter expert on diverse communities, about Latinx representation in media. Writing when no one is telling our stories is a form of activism and bearing witness to our experiences. On this episode of Tamarindo, we talk to icon and writer, Dr. Ana Castillo, about why she writes, the evolution of her identity, and her latest book of poems, “My Book of the Dead” which is now available.
We also discuss what we hope for the future of our community, while we also pay homage to Latinx writers we lost this last year including Rudy Anaya who wrote the celebrated “Bless Me, Ultima” and Miguel Algarín, co-founder of the Nuyorican Poets Café.
Dr.Ana Castillo is a celebrated author of poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and drama. Among her award-winning books are ”So Far from God,” “The Mixquiahuala Letters,” and “Massacre of the Dreamers: Essays on Xicanisma.” Born and raised in Chicago, Castillo now resides in southern New Mexico.
Stick around for a fun game called “Have you ever…” that y’all can join in on!

Next, we revisit our conversation with journalist Alicia Menendez discussing her book, “The Likeability Trap: How to Break Free and Succeed as You Are.” Alicia Menendez is an MSNBC anchor, she’s a contributing editor at Bustle, and the host of the Latina to Latina podcast. Alicia spoke to us earlier during an event we hosted to mark Women’s History Month and to explore some of the barriers that women continue to face like racial and gender bias, and in many cases, homophobia.
Our event with Alicia is an example of the conversations we host completely free.If you want to support our work, please consider a contribution to help us kee bringing you these great conversations: https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/tamarindopodcast1
Note: We mention the greatest gymnast of all time, Simone Biles, who at the time of the recording had withdrawn from some of her competitions in Tokyo2020. However, after the recording of this episode, she did compete in the Women’s Balance Beam earning a Bronze medal. We celebrate and honor her decision to value her mental health and well-being and for being a role model for us all.
