On this episode of Tamarindo, we start by recapping how we did on our latest #reto or personal challenge! We'll tell you how we did facing our biggest #budget adversaries, happy hours and public transportation fails, you’ll find out who made it to the end and some tips to take home to try your own budget challenge.
We also kick off our first of many conversations around different aspects of #health as they affect our communities. Focusing on physical health for this chat, we share how we took our first “pasitos” or small steps towards a more conscious health awareness of what we eat, how we move, and how our physical health is connected to our emotional, mental, and overall well being. Through ideas on how to create positive habits, the power of accountability, and some personal healthy eating #tips, we set the stage for a fun conversation where we hope you’ll learn something too! We’re including some of the stats and resources we shared on the episode below.
As usual, we share our matraca and basura, including a nod to #DoloresHuerta who was honored with her own day in California on April 10th. We won’t reveal our basura, but we will say we wish “we could turn back time” on her comments!

On this episode of Tamarindo, our very own wellbeing-enthusiast Ana Sheila kicks off our new segment on personal challenges or #retos that push us to take note of our habits, identify what's harming vs. helping, and helps us live more intentionally.
Next, we delve into a discussion on #identity as we reflect on "I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter" the young adult novel by Erika L. Sanchez. Our chat is light on spoilers, so even if you haven't read this story of a #FirstGen Mexican teen named Julia who is grappling with the recent death of her older sister Olga, you'll connect with the themes we discuss. We reflect on labels like #Chicano, #Latina, #Latinx and other terms that we have connected to at different points in our lives. We know #MEChA has made the news recently and both of us talk a bit about our days as part of MEChA in high school and college. We can't wait to hear your thought on this as well!
Finally, we give a big Tamarindo #matraca to the forces behind a growing national community of badass #Latinas who lift each other up, #LatinasWhoBrunch! Tamarindo is teaming up with #TeatroLuna to co-host Latinas Who Brunch LA on Saturday April 6. Learn more about the event on this episode and secure your ticket here!

On this episode of Tamarindo we introduce you to wellness enthusiast, low key chismosa, and recovering model immigrant, Ana Sheila Victorino, the newest voice of team Tamarindo! Brenda interviews Ana Sheila and we learn how she came to be a Latina in tech to the co-founder of a wellness company. Originally from Mexico City, Ana Sheila received her BA from Stanford University and an MBA from UCLA Anderson School of Management where she was the VP of Diversity and Inclusion and served on the board for Out@Anderson, the #LGBT club. She especially loves working with and for underserved communities of all shapes and colors, romance languages (she speaks 3 ½), most everything from the 90s, and is deeply committed to her impact on this earth through how she lives and what she eats. In true Tamarindo tradition, we discuss what’s been buggin’ us lately and what we’re celebrating. We chat a bit about #auntbecky and entitled rich kids cheating their way to college #collegeadmissionsscandal and also what we want to see more of on the beach! We are so excited to have Ana Sheila on board and you can expect us to delve into ways to live our lives authentically, healthy and balanced.

On this episode of Tamarindo, Brenda chats with her friend and mentor Mari Riddle, the first Latina Executive Direct of Grand Performances, a nonprofit whose mission is to inspire community, celebrate diversity, and unite Los Angeles through free access to global performing arts. Together, they chat about what it means to bring your whole self to work and the challenges of being the head of a nonprofit organization. For 30 years, Grand Performances is one of Southern California’s largest presenters of free performing arts programs and an important summer destination in the Grand Avenue Arts District of downtown Los Angeles. It's a place where you can catch an opera about Pancho Villa, dance to world music, see bands from Cuba or hip hop group from Tehran. A truly LA experience! You can support Grand Performance on October 6th during their fundraiser.
Co-host Melinna Bobadilla is away at film festivals for the film she stars in “We know Where You Live”, directed by Honora Talbott, the story of a Mexican American couple moving into a trendy, gentrifying LA neighborhood who receive a “warm welcome” from two hipsters who are not what they seem. If you’re in LA, check out Melinna on Friday August 17 at the Holy Shorts Film Festival at the Chinese Theater in Hollywood. Get tickets here!

As we collectively process the impact of last night's #Oscars, we’re left pondering what progressed and what stayed the same when it comes to POC & Latinx representation on screen? We are happy to count the awards that went to Guillermo del Toro, Coco, and Jordan Peele as wins, but what about the fact that only 2.7% of film roles go to Latinxs? (http://remezcla.com/lists/film/ucla-hollywood-diversity-report-2018/) Lets get INTO IT with two Latinx filmmakers working to change this dire statistic. This episode is part two of our interview with Linda Yvette Chávez and Marvin Lemus, the creators of the bilingual digital series GENTE-FIED (2017 Sundance Film Festival Selection, executive produced by America Ferrera & MACRO Ventures). If you haven’t yet, stop what you’re doing and immediately play part one of where we meet these award-winning writers, directors, and producers, who are passionate about telling nuanced #latinx stories and multi-dimensional, characters. On this episode, we talk about #intersectionality and dive further into race, ethnicity & gender in the film industry, and explore why #RepresentationMatters. We’re way over the lip service to #diversity and are here for some equity and inclusion! And yes, we cosign #FrancesMcDormand ’s suggestion of the #InclusionRider. Additionally, a group of Latinx industry professionals led by National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC), gathered Saturday 3/3, to demand greater roles for #Latinxs both behind the scenes here:http://www.latinorebels.com/2018/03/04/nhmc-pre-oscars-protesters-demand-latinx-inclusion/
