Team Sanders Speaks Out On His Educational Platform [IEP 117]

Listen Later

Are you gearing up for California’s Election Day Super Tuesday? If you’re in Iowa, you’ve already had your caucuses.

If you’re in any other state that has elections later, then you’ll want to listen in as Amanda and Vickie bring you this mini-series in the hopes that it will help educate and prepare you for the primary elections on the educational platforms that each of the candidates has going into this 2020 Presidential Election.

On today’s episode, Amanda and Vickie enjoy a great conversation with Dr. Heather Gautney and Dr. Samir Sonti from Senator Bernie Sanders's team not only about what their campaign has planned but the methodology behind it. You’ll also hear about the challenges facing parents, students, and schools right now and some solutions they plan to implement if they become part of the administration.

Note: The Inclusive Education Project is not endorsing any political candidate by interviewing their teams for this mini-series. The IEP team invited representatives from all Democratic presidential candidates to be interviewed on the podcast.

Show Highlights:

  • Senator Sanders's plan is called  “A Thurgood Marshall Plan for Public Education”.
  • In some cities, segregation levels are nearly what it was pre - Brown v. Board of Education, the landmark U.S. Supreme Court case that made racial segregation of public schools unconstitutional in 1954.
  • There are a few studies that show that charter schools exacerbate segregation.
  • While campaigning in South Carolina, a lot of people they talked to stated that K-12 education was one of the most important issues to them and they viewed it as a civil rights issue.
  • Wall Street investors have seen charter schools as a vehicle for undermining public education.
  • One part of Sanders's plan is a strong defense of the public school system, which means holding charter schools accountable and stopping the proliferation of for-profit charters.
  • Another part of Sanders's plan is to fund a civil rights program within the Department of Education.
  • Dr. Heather addresses a number of issues plaguing the public education system, particularly special education.
  • There’s a piece of legislation called “The Workplace Democracy Act” which focuses specifically on strengthening unions. This is just one way that Senator Sanders's team has in mind for parents and teachers to become empowered.
