  • Spring Washam: Consciousness and The Spirit of Harriet Tubman – Part 1

With so many overwhelming challenges facing society today, how can we begin to bring about change? How can we unite in a country filled with opposition and division? Oftentimes, great leaders and pioneers must face extremely challenging situations and oftentimes risk their very lives to perpetuate a change. One such revolutionary was American abolitionist and social activist Harriet Tubman, who was born into slavery. She escaped and risked her life to save nearly 70 enslaved people through the activist network known as the Underground Railroad. Our guest today, author and spiritual leader Spring Washam, dives deeply into the consciousness of Harriet Tubman and explores how we can apply her teachings to the challenges we face today, including overarching division, greed, hatred, and disillusionment. She explains how Harriet fought for true American freedom for all – she stayed focused on forward movement and held a vision of peace. Spring is a teacher, healer, activist, and visionary based in Oakland, CA. She wrote an in-depth exploration of Harriet Tubman’s work in her latest book “The Spirit of Harriet Tubman: Awakening from the Underground.” Spring is considered a pioneer in bringing mindfulness-based meditation practices to diverse communities including being one of the founding teachers at the East Bay Meditation Center, an organization that offers Buddhist teachings with attention to social action and multiculturalism. • Crystal and Marcus Bethea: Natural Health Solutions

Why is there such a lack of holistic health resources, especially in Black communities? Married couple and health experts Crystal and Marcus Bethea join us today to discuss the state of healthcare in the US, and especially in the Black community. They explain how in certain areas, community care centers have closed so people lack education and awareness, then end up with second-rate providers who do not offer the quality of care and medication available elsewhere. People are miseducated, and encounter complications. Doctors in these communities automatically ask patients to lose weight and begin prescribing more and more medication to help with symptoms, rather than investigating the underlying causes. They further discuss the root causes of common diseases such as diabetes and obesity. Nutrition is not taught in schools, nor are healthy cooking courses. They talk about beginning with subtle changes, such as teaching community classes, offering education for adults, etc. It’s a matter of economics as well as environmental conditions which dictate the foods available. The Betheas share how natural remedies have long stood the test of time and talk about the ways in which a more holistic approach can offer stronger ways to healing. They share ideas about the use of essential oils, massage, Reiki, acupuncture, and other natural healing methods. Crystal Bethea is a military veteran and wellness entrepreneur, while Marcus Bethea is a CFO, insurance person, and business expert. Crystal’s family background includes many RNs and military veterans. She is also a massage therapist and through her studies learned so much about natural health and healing treatments. Together they own and operate C3 Wellness Spas in Florida. Info: c3wellness.com

  • Tom: Rescuing Ukraine’s Animals

Today’s guest, British Army Veteran “Tom,” (We do not have his last name for security reasons) went into Ukraine to help abandoned and injured animals, caught in the fray of the war. After serving in heavy conflict zones such as Iraq and Afghanistan, Tom’s experiences manifested into PTSD. By volunteering to help animals in Ukraine, it helped to soothe his physical and emotional state which included depression and anxiety. Tom worked with former military animals and the compassion he felt toward those animals helped to save his life. He and fellow military veteran “Steve” volunteered early on in the war to get supplies to children and hospitals, then aimed to help as many animals as he could. In the midst of all the devastation, he offered help and assistance in the high-conflict zone. He describes the horrible conditions as people are trying to rebuild. Almost all of the animals he rescued were terrified; he and his fellow volunteers have been bitten and injured numerous times, until eventually the animals began to trust them. These innocent animals remind us of patience and compassion, and pure unconditional love. Tom explains how zoos in Ukraine are bombed and abandoned, pets are lost, and those who keep exotic animals as pets often leave them behind. He shares a story of how he and other volunteers moved nine lions from abandoned zoos with help from other international organizations to a sanctuary in Europe. First the lions moved to Romania, then later were relocated to safety in Colorado. They operate in very dangerous areas and the first task is to reach out to local people to make sure the animals, including many dogs and cats, are not someone’s pet. They re-home them from there. They mainly house animals throughout Europe because of costs of moving them to other countries worldwide. Tom’s organization is “Breaking the Chains International” and they do accept donations for food and veterinary care. He has recently completed building an animal shelter in Ukraine where they can treat seriously injured animals. He and his fellow veterans continue to help the people in Ukraine as well, with needed supplies and support. He further talks about how innocent animals and people are the ones who suffer in war and how we must eventually strive for a peaceful planet. He and his fellow volunteers are now expanding ground teams to react to any natural disaster in the world and specifically provide emergency services for animals. • Andrew Harvey: Sacred Activism – Part 2

With all of the challenges globally, whether it be war, inflation, economic collapse, post-pandemic stress, and so much more, how can we remain in a state of hope? Today Lisa continues her conversation with scholar and activist Andrew Harvey. Andrew Harvey is an internationally renowned religious scholar, writer, teacher, and the author of more than 30 books. He is the founder and director of the Institute for Sacred Activism, an international organization focused on inviting people to take up the challenge of our global crises through inspiration and effectiveness, toward practical change in a peaceful way. He explains how the “global dark night” is part of an evolutionary process and how its very intensity makes it the potential way to discover a new embodied, divine humanity. He shares his ideas about “Radical Regeneration” and how the current global crisis is not asking us to simply “make things better” or invent new ways of living. It is demanding that we surrender to a transformation so radical that we become a new variety of the human species. He discusses how ideas evolved from his four most recent books he wrote with co-author Carolyn Baker from 2016-2021. In his book, “The Hope: A Guide to Sacred Activism,” he describes sacred activism as a marriage of spirituality and activism and how, without a spiritual path, the activist may become egotistical and devoid of inspiration, therefore resulting in burnout and despair. Without passion, an individual who follows only their spiritual path may become isolated and ultimately irrelevant. Sacred Activism seeks to integrate devotion to something greater than oneself with the need to make a difference in the world, as well as developing a profound, powerful, sacred consciousness, which we are all capable of achieving.
