The entire conversation is worth listening to, but skip ahead to 21:03 to hear a caller, Tom in Tom's River, talk about how he was accidentally shot at the age of 11 years old. He's now quadriplegic, and he speaks at schools about gun safety.

Accidental shootings by curious preschoolers are happening at a rate of about 2 per week.

Jack Healy, national correspondent for the New York Times, joins us to discuss the frequent tragedies that happen when toddlers get their hands on a legally registered adult's guns, and what we can do about it. He covered a particularly tragic stretch of April where four toddlers found guns owned by their parents and fatally shot themselves. 

Healy said one of the troubling discoveries he made while covering this story was the lack of data on children who shoot family members friends, and in many cases themselves with guns owned by their parents. 

"It's tragic but the numbers are so incomplete because there are no real-time reporting requirements or data sources where you can track these things," he said. "So this group Every Town, which was the source of the numbers we used, goes by media searches and obviously some of these things fall through the cracks. Some of them may never make it into a local newspaper or hit some Google news alert. So presumably there are far more of these things out there and there also may be some of these things that never get reported to the police, if someone is thankfully not injured or hurt."

Mark Green, a former NYC public advocate, host of the syndicated weekend radio show "Both Sides Now" and the author of Bright, Infinite Future: A Generational Memoir on the Progressive Rise (St. Martin's Press, 2016), traces the arc of his public service career from 1970 working for Ralph Nader to today's campaigns.

Green says that he committed to being self-critical and honest in his memoir, especially about his failed mayoral run against Michael Bloomberg in 2001 and the election day that coincided with September 11th.

Should off-shore medical schools be allowed to pay American hospitals for their students to learn from doctors?

Hear from Neal Simon, president of the Caribbean-based American University of Antigua College of Medicine.

And Jo Wiederhorn, president and Chief Executive Officer of the Associated Medical Schools of New York, says New York schools are struggling to find spots at American hospitals for their students to partake in clinical clerkships.

Wiederhorn and Simon both agreed that part of the problem with this issue is that there is no data to show that American medical students aren't able to get clinical clerkships to learn from doctors at New York hospitals, but Wiederhorn said that although hospitals may accept many U.S. medical students, there may not be enough patients and doctors available for these students to have a quality learning experience because of competing off-shore medical school students at these hospitals. She also said that off-shore medical schools take up half of the slots for clinical clerkships in New York, leaving U.S. medical students a limited amount of places to vie for.  

Simon countered by saying there is no evidence that any New York hospital has denied students from U.S. medical schools a clinical clerkship because of off-shore medical school students.  

Zarqa Nawaz, creator of the sitcom "Little Mosque on the Prairie" for Canadian television and the author of Laughing All the Way to the Mosque (Virago, 2016), talks about her new memoir and her long-running sitcom that featured a Muslim family.

The City Council votes Thursday on a bill to require a 5-cent surcharge for "single-use" paper and plastic shopping bags.

One of the sponsors of the bill City Councilman Brad Lander said that 5-cent fee is meant to incentivise shoppers to use reusable bags, instead of having to purchase a new one. While critics have said this fee will adversely impact poorer communities, Lander said studies have debunked that claim. 

"What the data all shows, there's this great survey from Washington DC and another from Buenos Aries, it doesn't matter whether you're rich or poor, black or white, young or old, no one wants to pay the fee, everyone can remember to bring reusable bags, and that's what people will do."
