Adam S. Miller, an American writer of religious criticism and interpretation and also of contemporary Latter-day Saint lay theology, is a professor of philosophy at Collin College in McKinney, Texas, where he directs the college’s honors program.

Miller has offered a fresh interpretation of such things as Christ’s atonement, the appropriate relationship of scholarship with faith, and the nature of Latter-day Saint “testimony”.Miller co-founded Salt Press, a publisher of Mormon studies sold to BYU’s Maxwell Institute,and also founded and serves as co-director of the annual colloquia, the Mormon Theology Seminar.

Notes:

In the first block we meet Adam S. Miller, a professor of philosophy, author, and Mormon. He discusses growing up in a small branch of the church in Pennsylvania and eventually going to BYU after his mission to Albuquerque, New Mexico. Adam served part of his mission on Navajo reservations, and they discuss that experience and attitudes towards the LDS church among the Navajo, including their experiences with the Indian Placement Program. Adam refers to his missionary service as “extremely formative”. They discuss Adam’s experience meeting his wife at BYU.

The second block begins with a discussion of philosophy and the LDS church. They discuss Adam’s books, beginning with his first books that are not LDS oriented to more recent books that are LDS oriented. Adam’s latest book is An Early Resurrection, Life in Christ Before You Die. This book discusses finding freedom and vitality in Christ by surrendering your life to him.

The third block opens with a discussion of The Mormon Theology Seminar. The seminar does a focused study on a scripture passage and writes papers. Those papers are published by the Neal A. Maxwell Institute. Richie describes this as a summer camp for philosophy. They finish with the three questions.

In the first block of The Cultural Hall, we are introduced to Aleisha “Mama Leisha” McDaniel. She is a writer, speaker, blogger, and mother of a child with Autism. She grew up in Utah but lived in Arkansas for a while when she was young. She graduated from Utah State University (go Aggies!) with a degree in English. They discuss some of the differences in living in Utah and Arkansas, including differences between being in a predominantly LDS area to minority LDS area. They discuss blogging and how attention is changing from written blogs to video content. We find out where the name Mama Leisha came from. Aleisha describes some of the inspiration and guidance for her blog.

The second block begins with a discussion of Aleisha’s journey as a parent of a child with Autism, how they found out that her son had Autism, and how they deal with having a child on the Autism spectrum.

The third block starts with a discussion about Aleisha’s non-profit, Season’s Readings, and porch pinatas. Aleisha tells us about a Kate Spade bag and getting some cool stuff from Kate. (note: this episode was recorded before the tragic death of Kate Spade). The episode finishes with the three questions.
