  • Algeria: The final days? Military signals end of Bouteflika era
Despite a month of protests in Algeria, there were no spontaneous cries of victory when the head of the army took to the airwaves to announce it was time for Abdelaziz Bouteflika to go. As the constitutional council decides whether to formally move to replace the ailing president, the ball is clearly in the court of the street. How big will Friday's marches be? In a nation still scarred by the violence of the 1990s and early 2000s, can the country peacefully segue out of the Bouteflika years?

  • How to deal with China? EU divided over Belt and Road Initiative
France's president welcomed Xi Jinping for a state visit where the host decided to call for backup. After the easy part - the state banquet, the signing of mega-deals - Emmanuel Macron invited German Chancellor Angela Merkel, flanked by European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker. Having just four around the table meant getting on with issues like the Belt and Road Initiative. Are critics right to call it a debt trap? Is it any different than being beholden to US giants?

  • After the Mueller report: Plenty of legal and political battles on the road to 2020
The summary of the Mueller report offered up by Donald Trump's new attorney general brought smiles to faces at the White House this Monday. The special prosecutor handed in his report with no new names to be added to the 37 indicted during his 22-month investigation into possible collusion between Russia and Trump in the 2016 campaign. But are Trump's legal troubles really over?

  • Her way or the highway? Theresa May pits 'people' against parliament
European leaders in Brussels have granted Theresa May a Brexit delay, albeit shorter than the three months she requested. May 22, the eve of the European elections, is the date suggested by the European Council. But there's a big if: if the UK parliament finally decides on what it wants. But can the prime minister convince enough MPs to agree to a divorce deal they've roundly rejected twice?

  • Trump's biggest fan? Bolsonaro breaks with Brazil's non-aligned past
Brazil is no longer anti-US. The words of Jair Bolsonaro, welcomed to the White House for his first bilateral trip abroad as president. Donald Trump reciprocated, saying Brazil and the US have never been closer. Gone are the days when the Latin American powerhouse prided itself on its non-aligned credentials on the world stage.

  • What's your source? How to tell right from wrong in the age of social media
It's what "www" stands for: the World Wide Web. When the Internet truly went global nearly a quarter of a century ago, there was much rejoicing at the prospect of news at the speed of light and a global conversation where informed citizens could share news. Never has humanity had access to so much news, often in real time, and never have traditional media outlets like newspapers, radio, and even television felt such a decline.

  • Never can say goodbye? UK parliament asks EU for Brexit delay
British MPs have voted overwhelmingly to ask the EU to delay Brexit for at least three months. The UK is due to leave the European Union in 15 days with no deal after PM Theresa May's withdrawal agreement was rejected by MPs twice. Today, 412 MPs voted in favour of the government requesting an extension from the EU, while 202 voted against. The EU has warned there must be a credible reason for a delay. So how should the rest of the 27 respond?

  • The nays have it: No breakthrough in sight as Brexit deadline looms
It's now 16 days to go until the UK is due to leave the European Union. Yes, after another whopping defeat for Theresa May's divorce deal, we're wondering if it'll be deal or no-deal Brexit, whether there will be a second referendum, a general election, whether parliament has in its ranks a faction or a leader that can build some kind of majority for some kind of solution. At this critical hour, what's the plan and where's the leadership?

  • After Bouteflika: Will Algeria protests force out old guard?
What next for Algeria? Citizens have scored a first victory with the announcement that the name of the country's incapacitated president won't be put up for a fifth term. Along the way, they've proven wrong the warnings that protests would foment chaos and a return to civil war. So is this a victory for peaceful change? Perhaps not yet. A new constitution has been promised, but no timetable has been set. Nor has a departure date for Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who's still officially head of state.
