  • Algeria elections: Bouteflika will not run for fifth term
Ailing Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika will not be seeking a fifth term in office. The elections, planned for April, have been postponed. Those announcements were made on state television tonight - in a letter by Bouteflika, read out on his behalf. In the letter, the president promised political and economic reforms for Algeria and that a new constitution will be drafted and voted on in a referendum. All this comes, of course, in the wake of three weeks of anti-government protests.

  • What's the problem with PSG? Qatar's star-studded club falters again
Is it worth it for Qatar? For the third year in a row, its 800-million-euro baby Paris Saint-Germain has crashed out in spectacular fashion at the first hurdle of the knockout phase of the Champions League. PSG blew a 2-0 first leg advantage at home against injury-depleted Manchester United. Why does a side that's crushing all comers domestically seem to always snatch defeat from the jaws of victory on the European stage?

  • Car trouble: Can manufacturers meet new EU emission standards?
The cars of tomorrow are on display this week in Geneva, but tomorrow's not soon enough for the EU, which in December decreed a hastening of better fuel mileage and a cut in carbon emissions. But manufacturers warn new standards are unrealistic, with some braced for a rocky 2019 due to the phasing out of diesel. If we're talking cars and energy transition, may France's Yellow Vest movement - which was sparked by a fuel tax - serve as a reminder that you can't talk about transport in a vacuum.

  • Change Europe can believe in? Macron and populists battle for spotlight ahead of elections
After the redrawing of the political landscape in France, Italy, the UK, Spain, Germany and the Netherlands, many wonder if it's now the turn of the European Parliament. This Tuesday, France's president appealed to EU citizens with proposals for a "Europe that protects", as Emmanuel Macron puts it. How much of his platform steals the thunder of the conservatives - particularly on border policy? And can he actually build an alliance of likeminded MEPs when the last ballots are counted on May 26?

  • An Algerian awakening? Protests swell as ailing President Bouteflika runs for fifth term
“One more year”. That's the promise of Algerian authorities if voters approve a fifth term for ailing President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, saying they will then replace him. But this time, citizens are out in the streets. Algerians who long thought it best to stay out of politics after the bloody years of the 1990s and the early 2000s are voicing their outrage. So far they've done so peacefully. Where will the movement go now? What are the reactions to the government's promise of a transition year?

  • Back to square one? Trump-Kim summit ends with no agreement
The Hanoi summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korea's Kim Jong-un had started amidst great optimism. But it came to an abrupt end on Thursday morning. So what went wrong? Does this mean we're now back to square one? Was Trump right to walk away? And should the US president really be travelling 13,000 kilometres - in each direction - without all the necessary groundwork being laid beforehand?

  • Trump-Kim summit: Handshakes, smiles... and substance?
Today we have our eye firmly fixed on the Vietnamese capital, where US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un have begun their second round of face-to-face talks. Eight months have passed since round one in Singapore. This time around, the pair gave the impression that things have got off to a good start. So what can be achieved in Hanoi?

  • 'All options are on the table': On track for a military conflict in Venezuela?
Today we're turning our eye to Venezuela, as regional powers gather in the Colombian capital this Monday - joined by Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido - to discuss new ways to pressure Nicolas Maduro to give up power. A weekend effort to deliver US aid resulted in deadly clashes at the Colombian and Brazilian borders. Maduro regards that aid as a smokescreen for a US invasion and in fact Washington is not ruling out armed action, saying that Maduro's days are numbered.
