  • 7. Gaza – Nothing Kills Like Hunger
    Please join us at patreon.com/tortoiseshack
Starvation is being used by Israel in Gaza as a weapon of war. After two months of little or no food supplies, Palestinian families of seven in the south received only three sacks of flour. An increasing number of Palestinians have been posting that they no longer can find food in the south, let alone the north of Gaza.
Famine and starvation have been used as a weapon of war in Ireland and in the US too, will the world allow this to happen in Palestine? As Palestinians watch western countries support Israel, they at least expect their supporters and friends to not let them die, not by bombs nor starvation. Dr Yousef Aljamal, Helena Cobban and Tony Groves discuss starvation in Gaza and how nothing kills like hunger.

In the first part of this podcast you will from journalist in Gaza, Mahmoud Mushtaha, about the very distressing events in Khan Younis and the flight of people who have already been displaced towards Rafah's so-called 'safe zone.' Then you'll hear from Younes Elhallaq, who is a 24 year old, who was completing his Degree in the now destroyed Islamic University of Gaza. Over the last 58 days he has lost his home, his friends and his future. Yet, as you'll hear, he remains determined.
He joined me as the tanks were beginning to close in on where he is sheltering in Khan Younis, to talk about the current state of things in Gaza, the Israeli military offer of 'displacement or death' and why the lack of action from the international community has made many Palestinians question the credibility of our civilised world.

It was a great pleasure to be be rejoined on the podcast by listener favourite, Prof Richard Murphy to chat about his new role as Minister for Anti-Woke*, the Tory's tax cut that is hiding creeping austerity, the lack of vision from the Labour Party of Margaret thatcher admirer Keir Starmer, the good aspects of the rise of alternative media and the politics of Palestine in the UK.
As always with Richard, the conversation goes in different directions and this was probably the first Nietzsche chat we've had on air!

  • 6. ‘Even Our Dead Bodies Are Punished’ – Israel is Redefining Savagery
Please join us at patreon.com/tortoiseshack In Episode 6, host Dr. Yousef Aljamal and pals Tony Groves and Helena Cobban are joined by the former deputy head of the UN human-rights agency in Palestine, Saul Takahashi and the Bethlehem Palestinian justice activist Baha Hilo. As Israel resumed its fierce bombardment of the people of Gaza and continued its campaigns of terrorizing the Palestinians of the West Bank, Baha traced many dimensions of those campaigns. He and Takahashi agreed that the State of Israel's actions in both places formed a continuation of the policy of genocide that it has pursued since 1948. Takahashi also gave a rich explanation of the international-law aspects of Israel's actions.

Shortly before 6:20am this morning I received a series of messages from people in Gaza. One of them was from Irish citizen, Zak Hania, and it included pictures that clearly showed that Israel had resumed it's bombardment of Gaza.
Zak rejoined me a few minutes ago to talk about the cruelty of restarting the "war", the continued lack of food, clean water and electricity and the despair he and his fellow citizens are feeling as another wave of attacks on an already destroyed area begin. He also talks about the kindness shown to his family in Dublin and the lack of contact he has had from our Department of Foreign Affairs. #BringBackZak

We said we'd return to the horrific attack on Parnell Square that injured several people and left a 5 year old child in critical condition, and the subsequent chaotic scenes that played out in Dublin city centre. So here it is. Our podcast with the best immigration reporter in the country, the Dublin Inquirer's Shamim Malekmian, Green Party Cllr and former Dublin Lord Mayor, Hazel Chu and our bastion of sanity, Mr irishelectionprojections.com Harry McEvansoneya.
We delve into the topics of classism, racism, the far right opportunists, the medias soft-enabling of hate, the Garda response and resourcing issues and the good, bad and ugly politics that can't be allowed to say that they couldn't have seen this coming.
We also pay tribute to the real heroes, the group of strangers who came together and undoubtedly stopped what could have been an even worse act of reprehensible violence.

  • 4. I went to Israel, but I came back from Palestine – Richard Boyd Barret
    Please join us at patreon.com/tortoiseshack
In this episode PalCast co-hosts, Yousef and Helena speak with Irish TD Richard Boyd Barrett from People Before Profit about his decades long involvement and activism for Palestine and the role of mass movements across the globe in bringing about change in Gaza and granting the Palestinians their right to self-determination.
They discuss and highlight other struggles such as Ireland and South Africa, and roles such as the Irish Diaspora in the U.S. Richard expresses his view that it is not "in our thousands, in our milions" but it is "in our millions, in our billions" are now with the Palestinians, which is a sign of freedom to come sooner than many think.

If you read the piece A Lucky Gazan Routine, that we posted a few days ago by 20 year old Literature Student, Noar Diab, then you'll be familiar with her experiences of the last 49 days. If you haven't then you can read it here:https://www.patreon.com/posts/free-to-all-noar-93352128
Noar joined us hours before the temporary ceasefire began to tell us about her story, her plans to travel, her passion for performing and her love/hate relationship with writing and how the Israeli destruction of Gaza has taken all of those dreams away. She is a remarkably strong young woman and this, despite the grimness of the subject, is an uplifting conversation.
We also open on some thoughts on the Dublin Riots and the heroism of many people yesterday.
