In today's episode, Tracy speaks with Kelly Dobson, chief leadership officer of LeaderShift Inc, about "The Farm CEO" and the importance of farmers adapting an executive mindset when it comes to their farming operation.

Thinking of yourself as the CEO of your farm might seem like a foreign concept to many farmers, especially if you are a sole operator or a small farming operation. It might even seem more than a little bit exaggerated and over the top. In reality, it's a crucial mindset shift that can pay dividends towards your happiness and farm results.

To drive home the point, Tracy and Kelly take the conversation one step further and compare agriculture to the Business World. In every mainstream business, there is a leader with the title of CEO who is continuously improving themselves and their leadership abilities to increase business results. They do this for several reasons. First off, in order to keep their position as CEO they need to prove that they can continue to drive business results. In order to drive continuous improvement in their business, they realize that they need to constantly improve themselves as a leader. Farmers are avid learners, and for decades they have developed their operation with new varieties, better genetics, better machinery, more land, and so on. Adopting a CEO mindset very well might be the X-Factor that changes your farming operation.

In the interview, Kelly states that the research is clear. "Smart, technically savvy and hard-working" is now entry level for leadership ability. High-performing leaders are leading relationally. Average leadership works okay in average circumstances, but only high leader effectiveness will effectively address our current farming circumstances of increasing volatility, uncertainty, and complexity. These circumstances take an enormous toll on the physical and emotional health of the leader, as well as those around them.
