 Maureen is a 61 year old woman, who lives in rural Alberta, just north of Edmonton Canada. She grew up in the area, and has very strong ties to the community. She is the second youngest of five children, and weight has been a “concern” for as long as she can remember. She has lost, gained back, lost, gained back weight multiple times throughout  her life – starting as a child of around 8 years of age. Following traditional Calories In/Calories  Out – low fat diets. Her mom was a nurse, and was continuously on / off diets, trying different weight loss  techniques - never “obese”, 20 – 40 lbs overweight. Dad always maintained healthy weight. Siblings were all “normal healthy” weight in their youth. She doesn’t have any underlying health issues, blood sugar, cholesterol, BP levels all within  normal ranges. Exception is an underactive thyroid, has been on medication for approximately  15 years. Maureen acknowledges she was an emotional eater; food was a source of comfort. Salty  snacks, breads were her drug of choice. She also embraced a lifestyle that involved a lot of  socializing and drinking. Not one for fast foods, soda drinks, sugary treats actually had a very  healthy diet for the most part. Whole, unprocessed foods were always her preference. Considers herself blessed to have strong relationships with her brother and his family; nieces /  nephews, great nieces / nephews. Has many long-term friendships, many of whom have offspring that are like family to her as well. Has had a very diverse work history, lots of rewarding life experiences. Found her “calling” as a  health and safety professional about 20 years ago, absolutely loves and is passionate about  her work. Loves being outside, traveling and exploring Canada, scenic walks or hikes, working in yard or  garden, star gazing, campfires, water activities. Life has thrown Maureen some curve balls, and she has found a resilience she never knew she  had. She is exceedingly grateful for where she is now, and the new found HOPE she has  discovered through the intermittent fasting way of life and way of eating.

I am a working Mum of 3 kids (9, 6, 3) with supportive husband and I live in a small rural town in Western Australia.

I have been overweight for most of my life even though I was an active child, participated in sports and still do.

Became morbidly obese after having 3rd child. I have tried many programs over the years, some have worked and then I piled the weight back on with a bonus.

I have a sweet tooth which probably started when I was sick regularly with tonsillitis as a child.

In 2020 I made an appointment with a Metabolic Health Clinic in Wembley (Perth). They got me onto intermittent fasting 16:8. They shared a podcast of Graeme’s story with Bett Lucas on Facebook.

Since then I started following The Fasting Highway and  bought Fast, Feast, Repeat by Gin Stephens. I  started the 28 day challenge on the 18th November 2020 after I read the book (in 3 days) and haven’t looked back. I have also read Graemes' book The Fasting Highway.

In 2021 I made the decision to cut out alcohol as my main goal is to get my health back!!

To date I’ve lost 9.4kg since I started clean fasting.

I’m excited to see what 2021 will bring as I am confident I can get my health back.

Starting weight: 121.2

Current weight: 111.8kg

Heaviest weight :135kg ~ 2018

Goal weight: anywhere from 60-70kg, I’ll find out when I get there

 I am a 53 year old woman from Callands Virginia USA, my husband and I live with 2 bossy little dogs and 3 rescue cats in a very rural community.  I work full time as a title clerk for an auto dealership and have been doing that type of work for about 25 years, prior to that I worked in the banking industry, so I have always had sedentary jobs.  I never really struggled with weight issues until my early 30’s it was at that point that I began a weight loss roller coaster that would engulf my entire adult life until I found intermittent fasting about 15 months ago, since that time I have lost 41kg ( 91 pounds) and could not be more thrilled with the absolute freedom this way of life gives you.

My name is Vanessa Avalos and I’m 38 years old living in Bridgeport, CT. I work with adults in the mental health field and enjoy it very much. I have two children, ages 6 and 4, and a partner who is super supportive of my intermittent fasting lifestyle. I enjoy helping others learn about it as well. I’ve been intermittent fasting since June 2019 and will continue to do so for the rest of my life. I have not always been obese. I started becoming obese in my mid to late 20s. I was very lucky that I never developed any health issues but always knew that I could because of family history of diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. But I did offer from constant sinus infections, respiratory infections, nausea, and acid reflux. I wanted to change the course of my life in the hopes of preventing diseases and live longer for my children. No one can tell me IF doesn’t work because I’m living it and will continue educate others on it. Everything I used to suffer from before, I no longer do because of IF.

I’m a stay-at-home dad that homeschools my 3 children.  I’ve always been a heavy kid/guy.  I’m 6’5”.  I peaked a 436 lbs and ended up having 2 weight-loss surgeries (lap band and then the gastric sleeve).  My weight got all the way down to 259 lbs and then rebounded to about 315 lbs.  At that point I began a health program (and became a health coach) and lost a bunch of weight.  I got down to about 270 lbs, but then again the weight crept back up.  I got up to 330 lbs when I began IF back in November of 2020.  Since then, I’ve lost about 30 lbs.  I just returned from Spring Break where I was able to pretty much maintain.  I’m loving the intrmittent fasting lifestyle.

Until the age of 45, Netta had always eaten "normally"... that is, 3 meals a day, sometimes a snack or two, and treats on special occasions. She was a self-identified sweet tooth. Not a day went by without her eating chocolate, cookies, or some kind of sweet dessert. And she didn't have a problem with that. She was lucky in that she hardly put on weight - maybe an extra 15lbs over the years, at the most. But weight isn't the only sign of health issues. From her early thirties Netta had been suffering from a very slow digestion, with bloating and pain, as well as infertility issues, depression and mood swings, achy joints, and signs of a fatty liver. It was only when she tried cutting out sugar, sweeteners and flour in 2015 for a period of two weeks in the hopes of improving her digestion that she realized just how much sugar in its various forms had been hijacking her health.

It started off as a temporary experiment to cut down sugar, but after only a few weeks she ended up feeling so much better that she just carried on and never looked back. And it's been almost 6 years!

Yes, she lost her extra pounds, but more than that, she gained more energy, her digestion and liver went back to normal, her spare tire melted away, she felt 20 years younger and her whole relationship with sugar and herself changed!

She also learned how to make her own probiotic (fermented) foods and drinks for her gut health, like yogurt, kefir, kombucha and lacto-fermented sauerkraut. Intermittent fasting came naturally as a result of appetite correction about a year after she cut sugar. Now she eats once or twice a day, and enjoys her food like never before.

Because she's a teacher, she started giving workshops to help other people break free from sugar and get back their energy for life... and now she has an online program, a website and a podcast called Life After Sugar!

David Williams Biography.

 I was born in the United States 55 years ago and grew up in the Detroit suburbs. After university and military service I married a Canadian and have lived in Toronto for more than 25 years. I’ve enjoyed various careers from teaching in public schools, working for a foodbank, and information technology. Just prior to the pandemic, I completed a 20 year career in IT with the justice system. I first became obese as an adolescent. While in the military, I used diets and lots of running to stay within prescribed weight limits but was usually overweight. As the most overweight officer on the ship, I was put in charge of other overweight sailors (AKA, the Fat Boy Program) to lead them in lunchtime exercise. Once I ended my military service, my weight took off and I gained another 60 lbs so fast I got stretch marks. Fortunately, marriage and home cooking stopped my expansion and I settled into being 50-90 lbs overweight ever since. Together, my wife Barb and I have tried a few diets. Of the two of us, I’m much more of a tinkerer and have tried additional more restrictive diets including the 4 hour body (Slow carb) and Dr. Fung’s extended fasts. I didn’t find any of them sustainable long term, though they did help prepare me for success with IF. I’ve always been a stress eater and drinker and work stresses were usually my trigger. The foods and alcohol that temporarily soothed me were always processed high carbs and sugar which ultimately left me more stressed and sad. A year ago, I was near my highest weight and experiencing daily bouts of reflux and bad snoring. I knew my obesity was leading to serious medical issues and that I had to make a change. However, my high carb eating and drinking made it impossible to stick to any of my old diets for more than a couple days. In November, Barb discovered The Fasting Highway Face Book page and podcast. After reading Graeme Currie and others posts, I immediately started the diet by copying Graeme Curries example precisely. I read Feast, Fast Repeat and understood just how healthy IF can be as a way of life. I started on November 19thand I think I will remember it as one of the most important days of my life.

I am 55 years old and I have been overweight or obese since childhood. My first attempt to lose weight was under the care of a hospital dietician. I was 10 years old. My weight really started to be an issue after having my children. I dieted a low calorie plan, lost some, then gained it all back. My highest known weight was 158 kg in 2003. Mostly my weight sat around 127 kg.

I developed type 2 diabetes and lymphedema in both legs  At my worst,( in 2003), my left calf measured 93 cm.

By the summer of 2020 I was taking over 100 units of mixed insulin a day and my weight had risen to 142 kg. August 2020 I started Intermittent Fasting at either 16:8 or ,18:6. September 1st I started OMAD. Within days I stopped insulin. My Hba1c has fallen to 5.7 (39) below the diabetes threshold. My lymphedema is greatly improved. I have lost 30kg and numerous dress sizes.

I have a long journey still, but this works!

My name is Shagen and as far as I can remember, I have always been overweight. My BMI normally borders on obese. Over the years, I have tried very hard to lose weight but to little effect. I do cardio at the gym 7 days a week but it didn’t help. I have tried all types of diets, again to no effect. When I was in my 30s, I over 110kg. I am in my 50s now and I need to bring my weight down before I get health complications. A friend of mine suggested that I do IF. I tried it once last year but not eating breakfast did not appeal to me and I gave up. But late last year, when I did a health check my doctor told me that if I didn’t bring my weight down, I am likely to have other health issues. That was a wake up call. So, I tried it again in November last year. I started 16:8 initially for almost 2 months and felt my clothes becoming loose. I then increased my fasting by an hour gradually to 20:4 now. I feel better, have more energy and find that I am now more alert. My goal is to reduce my weight to 70kg so that my BMI shows that I am in the healthy weight range.
