The Hardest Word to Say (0:00:00)
What is the one syllable, two letter word that manages to paralyze a large proportion of the population? If you were thinking the word “no”, you’d be spot on. Such an easy word to say, but an almost impossible response to give. Most of us are willing to bend over backwards to have to avoid turning someone down (and to avoid to resulting guilt when we do). Licensed psychotherapist, executive coach, and columnist, Jonathan Alpert is here to discuss why we find it so hard to say no, strategies to do so effectively, and why we shouldn't feel guilty for turning someone down.
Tipping 101 (0:22:34)
You’ve just enjoyed your baby back ribs at Chili’s in a booth 20 feet away from everyone else. Your check comes and you’re just not sure how much to tip your server. There are a million things to consider. From salons to Ubers to restaurants, how do we know how much to tip for different services? We’ve asked Liz Frazier, a family financial planner and friend of The Lisa Show, to give us her best tips on tipping.
A COVID-19 Barbecue (0:37:37)
You’re a good citizen. You wear a mask at the grocery store and you’ve spent more time at home than ever before. But if you’re like the rest of us, you’re ready to do something fun. It’s natural to want to do those normal summer activities like host a BBQ or gather all the neighbor kids together to slip n’ slide and eat popsicles. But is there a way to have fun in the sun with our friends while being cautious, socially distant, and safe? Friend of the show, Carrie Ann Rhodes, says yes! There is a way. Carrie Ann is with us today to share how we can throw a COVID safe summer party.
Children’s Media (0:52:47)
The effects of media are real. From the earliest war propaganda to today’s latest Play Station 4, media has been shaping our decisions and opinions for a long time. But of greater concern is how it impacts our children’s developing minds. If you’re a parent, at some point you’ve probably worried about what your kid is watching, whether it’s because of violent content or too many hours of screen time. So, what are the dangerous effects we should be aware of as parents... and what media is harmless? Here to tell us more about when we should be pulling our hair out with worry and when we should take a step back when it comes to our kids’ media consumption is Sara DeWitt, kids media expert and Vice President of PBS Kids Digital.
Show Me History (1:12:13)
TV, movies, and even real life portray history as boring and dull. We see this in Harry Potter with the History of Magic class and Professor Binns going on and on while the students fall asleep. We see it in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off when a history teacher is trying to get his students’ attention, but they’re all napping. It’s easy to think of boring history classes and dusty old books full of information that hardly anyone cares about. But it’s important for us to learn about our past so we can improve our future. So how can we make history more fun to learn about? Mark Shulman is a writer who challenges the idea that history is dull. He is the author of the “Show Me History!” books. He writes about history through cartoons that keep readers captivated. We wanted to learn more about history through his eyes and understand how he makes it so interesting. We’ve invited him onto the show today to show us some history.
Deep Cleaning Your Fridge and Pantry (1:28:52)
You know that moment when you open the fridge and you get slammed with a horrible smell? Your first instinct is to close the door, but you also know you have to find the source of the odor, or it will only get worse. Finding the smell, and then cleaning out the rest of your fridge is rarely a positive experience as you find empty salad dressing bottles, soggy spinach, and who knows what’s in that Tupperware container hiding in the back. But it’s so satisfying when you have your fridge clean and smelling good again. So, we invited expert and owner of Go Clean Co, Sarah McAllister, on the show to give us her tips for cleaning your fridge and pantry.
