Intuitive Eating Series, Principle 1. Shana Spence, MS RD, joins us to talk through the realities of ditching a diet mentality, and seeing diet culture’s true colors. We talk about what, exactly, a “diet mentality” is, and why most of us have had one at some point. It’s a normalized behavioral pattern, however disordered and unsustainable it may be. We also discuss the stress of dieting, and how intentional weight loss may be more health-harming than health-promoting.

Intuitive Eating Series Intro! Elyse Resch, MS CEDRD-S, is one of the co-authors of the book, Intuitive Eating: A Revolutionary Anti-Diet Approach. This is the 4th edition of the book, written with Evelyn Tribole. This non-diet approach to nutrition therapy and counseling has changed the way many dietitians practice now, giving us a language for effective nutrition work that provides an antidote to diet culture.
In this episode—an intro to the NEW RD Real Talk Intuitive Eating podcast series!—Elyse provides us with a foundation for the psychology of the Intuitive Eating approach. We review the "three brains" and how they all impact our behaviors, and survival instincts. And of course, she shares some real talk about how the approach has evolved over the years.

My good RD friend, Cara Harbstreet, joined me for a reverse interview—asking about why I recorded another Intuitive Eating series, what to expect from it, and how we all—as humans and practitioners—grow and evolve. Cara and I talk about our own process of rejecting diet culture and challenging the norms within weight-centric care, while seeing the bigger picture of social justice issues along the way.
We recorded this as both an audio interview (here, for the podcast) and a video! If you want to watch us chat, join us here.

Carolina (Carol) Guizar joins the show to talk about why diet culture sucks, and what it looks like in the Latinx community. She gets real about her lived experience as a Mexican-American, and a woman in this country, struggling with beauty "ideals", thin-privilege within her family culture, and efforts to fit in and avoid otherness. Recently, Carol has taken her work, and anti-diet message to the Instagram account, @la_eathority. Here, she shares "Intuitive eating+body peace for Latinxs".

Veronica Garnett MS RD joins the show to talk about the realities of her experiences as a fat, black dietitian. Veronica is a Health at Every Size® (HAES), fat-positive, and culinary dietitian and has worked with various vulnerable populations such as folks with food insecurity, substance abuse, and chronic conditions such as HIV/AIDS. We talked about what things aren’t often considered as we try to diversify the nutrition field, her career path, and how to be more culturally competent. Real talk: Veronica shares her own lived experiences with racism and oppression within dietetics. She almost let her credential lapse, but has stuck around to provide her voice and activism to our field.
Of note: We recorded this conversation prior to all the #Covid19 changes to US life, but included a note to address that in the beginning. Online Support for Covid-19: @Covid19EatingSupport, @MoeMotivate, and @ComamosJunxts

Aaron Flores, fellow non-diet dietitian, joins the show to chat about why providers need support, and how he’s helping align a national eating disorder treatment center with Health at Every Size® practices. Aaron owns a private practice in Calabasas, California and also works as the HAES® director at the eating disorder treatment facility, Center for Discovery. In his own practice, he uses HAES® and Intuitive Eating practices to help clients find peace with their bodies and food. He is also a certified Body Trust® Provider and the co-host of the podcast, Dietitians Unplugged. Aaron shares about his personal journey in disordered eating and how that led him to the field. We also get real about how it is important it is for providers to get their own help when struggling and ways to normalize and embrace the need for personal help in the field.

Dawn Clifford Ph.D., RD, author of Motivational interviewing in Nutrition and Fitness, and associate professor at Northern Arizona University (NAU) joins us to talk about how she discovered a weight-inclusive approach and Health at Every Size®...and why she wasn't convinced right away. Now, Dawn is a refreshing agent of change in dietetics education, bringing HAES® and non-diet concepts to her students and peers. She directs a Future Education Model MPH program at NAU and loves to write and connect research on motivational interviewing and weight inclusive practices. In addition to sharing more about her work with students and fellow educators, we talk about how she navigates conversations on the topics of HAES® and Intuitive Eating with colleagues and how she’s committed to changing the future of dietetics and public health education.
Listener Question: Based on what I’ve heard, dietetics education is steeped in diet culture. Should I really pursue the RD credential if I align with Health At Every Size® and a non-diet approach? Is it worth it?
