Amee Severson RD helps us bring this series to a close as we finally talk about the very nuanced principle, gentle nutrition. This principle is how it all comes together, though it’s not seen as often on Instagram and the like. We dive into what “gentle nutrition” means, who it’s accessible for (or not accessible for), and how nutrition isn’t always the most important thing ever. Thanks for listening!

Kara Bazzi, LMFT and co-founder of Opal Food and Body Treatment Center in Seattle, WA, joins us for a discussion about intuitive movement. There's a lot to learn about what needs are met through movement, exercise, and sport. And, how we can learn how to meet those needs in other ways.

Intuitive Eating Series, Principle 8. Fat-Positive Counselor Dr. Maria Paredes joins us to talk about a key component to rejecting diet culture: respecting your body. This principle of intuitive eating brings it all together, as a reminder that learning to truly honor our body’s physical and emotional needs may feel like a radical act in today’s culture. As Evelyn Tribole succinctly puts this principle: “Accept your genetic blueprint.” Though, we know, on some days that’s far easier said than done.

Psychologist Dr. Rachel Millner, CEDS-S Psy.D, joins us to talk through emotional eating, and other coping strategies we can implement with kindness. This conversation, and principle, may feel especially relevant now (2020). We are all coping with major changes to our perceived “norm”; financial, emotional, physical, and other struggles; and a sense of normalcy in the world around us.

Intuitive Eating Series, Principle 6. Ayana Habtemariam, MSW RD, joins us to talk about the nuances of fullness, and how we feel it, or try to avoid, it. Fullness often isn’t easy to describe, and diet culture messages teach us to fear it, as a sign we have had “too much”. There’s internalized (and normalized) fat phobia in that mindset, which we have to challenge. There’s also a lesson that if we feel full, we’ve eaten beyond our needs, when in reality, we’re meeting them.
So, yah, let’s dive into this fullness thing.

Intuitive Eating Series, Principle 5. Kathleen Meehan, MS RD, joins us to talk about why Satisfaction is considered the Hub of intuitive eating. It's not just a feeling of fullness, or a satisfied craving, it's much more than that. It's honoring hunger, feeling fullness, knowing all foods can fit, and re-learning how to satisfy our own unique needs.
This Satisfaction thing extends beyond food, by the way.

Intuitive Eating Series, Principle 4. Christyna Johnson, MS RD, host of “Intuitive Eating for the Culture” podcast, joins us to talk about how to challenge, and fire, your inner Food Police. It’s a important step in getting back to eating intuitively, akin to the diet mentality.
Who are these “Food Police”? In the Intuitive Eating book, the Food Police are thoughts that control and manipulate our food choices, often (if not always) overriding our intuition and interoceptive awareness. Essentially, they rob us of autonomy around food, and police our every meal and morsel.
So, let’s get to firing those Food Police.

Intuitive Eating Series, Principle 3. Taylor Chan, MS RD, best known as @foodandfearless on Instagram, joins us to talk about ending the war on foods, and making peace with our food choices and preferences. This is the principle where people get hung up on the “eat whatever you want” semi-myth, and we do our best to dispel that, but also support it. It’s nuanced, and also comes with a big dose of privilege and food accessibility. We hope this conversation helps you (and your clients) navigate making peace with food.

Intuitive Eating Series, Principle 2. Josée Sovinsky, RD and therapist-in-training, joins us to talk about why it may feel so complicated, and challenging, to really honor and trust our hunger. Intuitive Eating (IE) is often simplified down to “The Hunger and Fullness Diet”, but there’s far more to this non-diet approach than simply “eat when you’re hungry!” Even when we focus on hunger, there are various types of hunger, both physical and psychological hunger cues, and reasons for which we might eat even if we aren’t hungry in that exact moment. We hope this conversation helps you navigate the nuances of your own hunger cues and your body’s needs, especially during times of change, uncertainty, stress, and rest.
