Heather and Robyn take on a listener question about the "problems" that are stereotypes of higher weight. What about things like osteoarthritis, sleep apnea, painful periods, or even the size of an airplane seat? What then?
After a little time spent on life and business updates (per usual), we dive into what Health at Every Size (HAES) means, using a wider lens with clients, and providing everyone the option of putting weight aside.
If you're open to learning more about HAES, stay tuned for an upcoming podcast series that dives into each principle of the movement! And for now, consider joining us at the next Weight Inclusive Nutrition and Dietetics (WIND) Symposium in Washington DC, on September 14, 2019. Registration is open!
Things we talked about today:
And the WIND webinar, "How to have conversations with clients about weight loss" by Jennifer McGurk RD CEDRD, is included in this bundle that you can access (3 CEUs).

[Replay from the RD Real Talk Intuitive Eating series!]
Jennifer Rollin, MSW LCSW-C and eating disorder specialist, joins me to talk about the spectrum of emotional eating. The seventh principle of Intuitive Eating addresses the times in life when we may try to numb emotions with food, or feel emotions because of food. We talk about personality traits, learning to recognize emotions, and our physiological responses to psychological stress.
Jennifer's work can be found on her site: jenniferrollin.com. She also writes about the anti-diet movement, and eating disorder recovery, for the Huffington Post. She also has a series of webinars, found here. Follow her work on Instagram: @jennifer_rollin

ICYMI: I’m hosting the DC WIND Symposium in September! Registration is open, and the planning and execution of this next WIND event has been almost all-consuming. So, instead of your regularly scheduled interview-style episode, I’m sharing some lessons learned, bringing you behind-the-scenes with this major project.
I confess to a Big Mistake I made during the WIND Workshop (a few, actually), what to expect at the DC WIND Symposium, and why I’ve shifted my stance on working with brands and company partners (who have, thus far, made most of this possible).
I share an anecdote about something I’ve learned since hosting the WIND Workshop (and why I’ll be re-recording one of these sessions), and also share this important quote from an eloquent essay by the author known as Your Fat friend on Medium:
“Beyond your good intentions, “the last acceptable form of discrimination” tells me that you believe racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism are all completed chapters, and that they have closed for all of us. But our attitudes are not so simple, our intent not foundational, and our history not so straightforward.”
Join us for the DC WIND Symposium in September! Early-bird registration is still open as of the time of recording. More about the agenda, speaker announcements, and registration information: weightinclusivenutrition.com/events
Or, apply for the WIND scholarship open to the Diversify Dietetics community!
Reminder: DC WIND is happening in collaboration with Fiona Sutherland and Haley Goodrich’s non-diet approach workshop! You don’t have to register for both, but you receive a discount on registration if you do!
Last but not least: If you have any questions, about HAES principles, WIND events and registration, or just life as an RD, my inbox is always open. RDREalTalk at gmail.com
Heather and Robyn provide a few answers to your questions today, addressing feedback from fellow healthcare providers when trying to take a non-diet, HAES-informed approach to patient care, and the limbo of “pseudo-recovery”, or that time in someone’s intuitive eating journey where they’re not quite sure what to do next.
If you’re a nutrition professional looking to learn more about this non-diet, weight-inclusive approach, consider joining us at the next Weight Inclusive Nutrition and Dietetics (WIND) event, coming up on September 14 in Washington DC! Registration opens May 13, on weightinclusivenutrition.com.

Heather and Robyn get real about pelvic floor health and when it may be a good time to reach out to a Physical Therapist, and then dive into the nuances of Intuitive Eating and food allergies. Robyn recently had to cut out dairy due to her little babe's dairy protein allergy, and takes us BTS of the diagnosis, her initial response, and how IE does, completely, work in the presence of these specific needs.

Kimmie Singh MS RD2Be joins us to talk about all things weight-inclusive care for PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome). Kimmie describes how her "informal" nutrition education started young, while she was studying physics in college, when she was diagnosed with PCOS at age 19. Given little medical guidance or nutrition resources, Kimmie took it up on herself to learn how to manage her symptoms.
Much of what we see in the PCOS literature focuses on weight-normative care and promotes weight loss or "weight management". This episode provides information on how and why this approach will likely fail, and how to effectively manage PCOS without a focus on weight.
Stay tuned for a review of a weight-focused commentary in a recent AND journal, Kimmie's personal experiences, and a PCOS Q&A.

Thin privilege exists. It's not a blessing, an entitlement, a praise on anyone's body size (or lack thereof), it's not a label, not something you've asked for, and not something you've earned. It is sociocultural and systemic. It is oppressing body types that exist outside the accepted norm. It is the ease of existing in this world, as Cara Harbstreet put it, "without the shadow of weight stigma following you around."
But first: Robyn Nohling and I co-host this episode and do a quick real-life-check-in, talk about why people ask food/health questions to the non-experts, and then, of course, thin privilege.
The post that re-sparked this discussion about thin privilege in the dietetics world: "We have to talk about thin privilege" by Kathleen Meehan RD.

Crystal Savoy MS RD joins me on the show to talk about her career path, how to stop counting calories (or help your clients through it), body changes, and grieving the thin ideal. Crystal studied at Simmons College, gaining a rare dietetics education in eating disorder treatment, and quickly landed her dream job as an associate dietitian with Real Life Women's Health (led by Robyn Nohling FNP RD).

Almost everything is impermanent, actually. Including this podcast! But we're here for now, and it's the 100th episode of RD Real Talk!
Today's episode covers everything from "adrenal fatigue" vs. allostatic load (as a follow up to episode 99), and then dives right into Instagram fatigue, and learning to sit with discomfort in various life stages and transitions. Know what our vulnerabilities are; learn how to set boundaries; remember that most things are impermanent (i.e. this too shall pass).
Read: Robyn's blog post on adrenal fatigue
We talk a lot about women's reproductive health in this episode. If you're curious to learn more, Robyn and I were part of a panel that recorded this educational webinar: Nutrition for Women's Reproductive Health. Register to access the recording and the workbook!
