Remember that last team workshop maybe it was a strategy session or a team-building activity during an offsite where everything just clicked?
The energy was high, ideas flowed, and collaboration felt effortless. And then you thought, How do we keep this momentum going once we’re back to business as usual?
In this episode of The Manager Track podcast, Ramona Shaw speaks with Alison Coward, author of Workshop Culture, to answer this question.
They explore what it takes to lead a team in a way that’s clear, connected, and intentional, especially when people work across locations and time zones.
Her insights are grounded in years of experience leading offsites and workshops and in understanding what it really takes to sustain that same flow and ease of collaboration in everyday work.
Alison shares five key areas leaders should focus on to strengthen team performance and build healthy habits together:
- Alignment: How to help teams connect to a shared purpose and make better decisions
- Cohesion: Why understanding each other’s working styles can reduce conflict and improve trust
- Communication: How to design meetings that are actually useful (and what to stop doing)
- Design: Small routines that build team culture every day, not just at offsites
- Change: Why behavior change is hard and what helps it stick over time
If you’ve ever felt stuck trying to “build a team culture” without clear steps or unsure how to lead a team that doesn’t sit in the same office, this episode offers practical ideas to try right away.

Stepping into a leadership role means shifting your focus from completing tasks to creating results with and through others.
It’s normal to feel uneasy about leaving behind the responsibilities that once defined and even created your success. You're supposed to stop doing what you enjoyed and what helped you achieve your current position.
Intuitively, that may just feel wrong. It may actually even seem like a threat to your credibility.
We hear this from the new managers we support all the time.
In this week's episode of The Manager Track, Ramona Shaw explains the real challenges and rewards of moving from a doer to a leader. Drawing from her own experience and from coaching over 200 new managers, she offers practical advice on how to embrace your new role even when you feel inclined to hang on to your IC work.
In this episode, Ramona covers:
- Task Execution vs. People Leadership: Understand the key differences between getting things done and leading people.
- Adapting: Learn why stepping back from hands-on work might feel like a loss and learn ways to overcome that feeling.
- Practical Strategies: Find everyday tips to adjust your mindset from simply doing to truly leading.
If you’ve jumped into tactical work and avoided the leadership-type things on your to-do list or questioned if you’re doing enough as a new leader, this episode is for you.
Learn how accepting a bit of discomfort can help you let go and lead more effectively.

While often praised as a strength and justified as "having high standards," holding onto perfectionism as you advance and your job gets bigger, could stall your progress, keep you from advancing, or ultimately result in burnout.
In this episode, Ramona Shaw breaks down how that happens and why it's so hard for many to reconcile and change course.
Ramona explores:
- The difference between healthy high standards and perfectionism
- How perfectionism can create bottlenecks and slow progress
- Why letting go of perfection doesn’t mean lowering quality
- Practical ways to shift from perfect to effective leadership
If you’ve ever spent too much time tweaking an email, delaying a decision, or over-editing work that was already good enough, this episode is for you.
Learn how to focus on impact rather than perfection, and delegate effectively—even when no one else does it as well as you do.

Most of us don't wake up in the morning looking to get into conflict at work, yet it happens all the time - from small irritations to full-blown disagreements.
In this episode of The Manager Track, Ramona breaks down why workplace conflicts happen and shares practical ways to handle them before they spiral out of control.
Ramona explores:
- The crucial difference between healthy opposition and destructive conflict
- How our personal interpretations create most of the tension we experience
- Three common ways people respond to conflict (and why understanding that matters a lot)
- How to de-escalate conflict in an effective and timely manner
If you’ve ever felt stuck in a cycle of tension with a colleague or boss or watched two talented team members clash while their work suffered, you’re not alone. It happens more often than we’d like, and the toll it takes on performance and emotional well-being is higher than we’d want it to be.
Yes, unfortunately, conflict is inevitable but it doesn’t have to be destructive.
In this episode, we break down practical strategies to navigate disagreements, foster healthy debate, and ensure that differing opinions lead to better outcomes, not workplace drama.

Many leaders believe that it's important for them to get agreement from others before making a decision. Yet this consensus-focused approach often results in delayed projects, diluted ideas, and teams that only appear aligned on the surface.
In this episode, Ramona Shaw examines how the pursuit of consensus, while well-intentioned, can actually hinder team performance and decision-making. She shares practical insights from her work with startups and established organizations where consensus-seeking had unexpected consequences and what to do instead.
Ramona explores:
- The natural appeal of consensus and why it feels right
- What really happens in meetings when everyone seems to agree
- The connection between consensus and conflict avoidance
- A clear framework for when to seek agreement - and when not to
If you believe that a group of people with diverse perspectives makes for a better team, then aiming for actual consensus is a misdirected effort.
If this resonates with you, then check out our latest episode of The Manager Track podcast HERE.
Or watch it on YouTube HERE.
Reflective Questions:
- When has seeking agreement slowed down an important project?
- What decisions could have been made faster without full consensus?
- How often do team discussions end in safe but uninspiring compromises?
- Does quick agreement in meetings reflect true alignment or something else?
