Buffalo Trace recently released Colonel E.H. Taylor Cured Oak Bourbon. This whiskey originally debuted in 2015 and that version of it was 17 years old. This new release is only 10 years old, but the process for making it remains the same. Cured Oak is created by using white oak barrel staves cured in open air for 13 months (more than double the standard 6 months). This reduces harsh tannins and pulls out more wood sugars during the aging process. Similar to the Four Grain release, this one has been met with much hype and fanfare, but we are here to tell you how it tastes. However, that might not even be the most exciting thing about this episode. Kenny recently took at trip to EverNorth in Michigan for the Pours and Pars event hosted by the Bourbon Junkies and he ended up selecting two ryes that we will release for the podcast in the future. We taste those in this episode and give you our initial thoughts. Cured Oak and EverNorth stuff...yeah...I know...I'd be jealous too. Cheers.

You've heard us talk with David Jennings in past episodes about Caleb's Crossing bourbon and rye. For this week's short, we taste and review the brand new limited-edition release (only 370 bottles) from Caleb's Crossing Whiskey Company which is the 1776-2026 Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey. Curated by our friend David Jennings, it features a blend of hand-selected barrels combining a traditional 95/5 rye mash bill with an experimental 100% rye. The whiskey is 8 years old and comes in at 110.76 proof. How does this one taste? You'll have to listen to find out. David has already done some amazing stuff with relatively new brand and we can't wait to see what he does in the future.

The A. Smith Bowman Distillery is Virginia's oldest operating whiskey distillery, founded in 1934 in Fairfax County just after the end of Prohibition. Now located in Fredericksburg, Virginia, it has become famous for it's award winning bourbons and it's association with Sazerac/Buffalo Trace. In the life of the podcast, we've never tasted or reviewed any Bowman product. However, in this episode we dive straight into the annual limited "cask strength" release. While we seldom see this bottle in our area - one of our community members (Kevin) sent us this bottle to review. In this short, we taste and review a brand new Liquor Barn store pick that comes from NEWS (New Era Whiskey and Social Club). This bourbon is 11 years old, is 135.2 proof, and carries a mashbill of 71% corn, 21% rye, and 4% malted barley. It's rumored to be Beam distillate, but we don't know that for sure. We originally met Kyle on a barrel pick for Bluegrass Liquor Box. A few months ago, Kyle burst onto the bourbon media scene with his eclectic and hilarious social media bourbon review series called "Corking Off! W/ Kyle." Old Forester High Angels' Share Rye released in March 2026 as part of their limited The 117 Series. Out of all the bottles we've reviewed from this series, this is definitely one of the most unique. Rumored to contain 12 year old whiskey, this 110-proof Kentucky straight rye was pulled from rare barrels that suffered exceptionally high evaporation loss, leaving behind a highly concentrated, rich flavor profile. We've gotten all kind of different tasting notes on rye whiskey, but the major note that we all got on this pour was equally surprising and pleasing. Tune into this short to find out what that tasting note is and ultimately what we thought of this rye whiskey.
