I've always said; if you want to learn about va((ines and how to make informed decisions about them as a mother - access the mother of a va((ine injured child. Because no one will have more information, more resources to provide you, more research to refer you to - and no one will understand the way the system works better than them. They've walked this path, into the fire and back - and I know you'll find this to be true too, after listening to this interview.

In this episode of The Midwitch Podcast, I speak with Aussie Mama Melanie, who shares the story of her 6 and a 1/2 year old, va((ine injured son, Chandler. 

After Chandler received his 18 month va((inations, Melanie immediately knew something wasn't right with her son. She speaks of the way her intuition was ignored, the way in which Chandler was passed from Paediatrician to Paediatrician, from Child Health Nurse, to Speech Therapist, to Occupational Therapist.

She discusses the way the Public Health System took no accountability and gave her no answers; diagnosing Chandler with a vaccine induced brain injury, but then revoking the diagnosis and wiping all evidence from his file. Yet advising her to continue him on the schedule...

For the last 5 years; Melanie and her husband have spent all of their time, money and energy on healing their son from within, after the medical system failed to support them.

This is a very raw discussion, about the journey Chandler and his family have been on - which unfortunately is a very common one within Australia.

Melanie bravely and honestly shares the way Chandler has been let down by the system time and time again - whilst his Mother continues to seek the answers that everyone is trying to keep from her...

I speak with Martina, who was reported, investigated and suspended as a Private Homebirth Midwife in Australia.

After realising there was no way she could support a birthing woman wanting to birth at home on their terms, by remaining registered with the system, and noticing herself practicing differently in order to toe the line with APHRA - she saw clearly that she could not fix the system from within it, and resigned from the medical birthing system all together.

Martina talks about her journey to, and within, Midwifery, the unregulated investigation process she was taken through and the famous twin birth attendance that was the catalyst for her journey of awakening.

This is a transparent and honest discussion that every birthing woman should listen to, to understand what overshadows you when choosing a medicalised homebirth, as well as the woman you are hiring to be present at your birth.

After 2 births within Australia's Private Birthing System, Emily was left feeling like there had to be something better than the "not very nice experiences" she had had.

With the threat of a c-section overshadowing both of her induced births, for no medical reason at all - she decided that, surely, there had to be a better way if she did decide to have a third child.

Emily awoke to the unprofessionalism and inaccuracy of the medicalised birth system pretty quickly, after the misdiagnosis of her 'large' baby (which in fact turned out to be 'small'); and the unnecessary urgency of a suggested c-section. Which Emily believes had more to do with her Obstetrician's shift ending, than the safety of her, or her baby.

After fate led Emily to connecting with a like-minded wise woman, who offered to support her on her third birthing journey, there was no way Emily was stepping back into the system.

Emily shares with us the story of her unhindered, uninterrupted, physiological birth; at home and in freedom. And the noticeable differences she viewed in her third child post birth.

First Poddy off the rank for 2021, and it was worth the wait! Recorded last year during the height of (OVID, I interviewed Abby Wake from The Awake Movement and Rhythm n Motion about her shift from hospital to homebirth, in Gympie Australia. 

After discovering the restrictions that would be imposed on her as a birthing woman, and the increase of medicalisation in her maternal care, birthing in a hospital was no longer an option for Abby.

Abby shares with us how she had to walk through her fears when looking for other options, how she navigated this change and found her power in the face of resistance to her decision.

Abby opens up about her first birth in the US, the way trauma can disassociate us from our bodies, the media blowup around her surprise pregnancy discovery at 8 months, the abuse she endured as a woman of colour in the birthing system, and how a history of sexual assault played an important role in curating a safe and healing space for birth this time around.

Spoiler Alert: her story has a beautiful ending!

Where has this presumption come from?

What's at stake for privately practicing Midwives, what does it takes for a Midwife to become a privately  practicing business woman - and how does this affect the care and advice they provide you as a birthing woman?

What is their relationship with the birthing system when providing a service to a birthing woman?
