Maintenance sounds so boring, doesn't it? We often love a project, getting started with making a change, excited to see how it feels when we achieve our goal. But do you know what's more challenging than meeting a goal? Maintaining the progress. Joining me today is my friend, Dr Tanielle Brew Smith, a fellow Family and Obesity Medicine Physician as well as a Coach for high-achieving women. We talk about learning how to maintain progress, as it relates to our work and experiences with obesity, as well as in the self-care practices so important in preventing a return to burnout.
Dr. Tanielle Brew Smith is a Family and Obesity Medicine Physician and Hypnosomatic Coach. Dr. Brew Smith completed her medical education at Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, GA. Afterwards, she completed her residency training at Ascension St. Vincent’s Family Medicine Residency Program. She expanded her knowledge into coaching and learning somatic techniques as tools to decrease her symptoms of burnout and to help in maintaining her 100-pound weight loss. Through self-reflection, meditation, hypnosis, breathwork, yoga and other modalities, she was able to understand her strengths and weaknesses, visualize her future, and create a life of joy, curiosity, and hope. She is now the founder and CEO of Brew Wellness Collective, which helps high achieving professionals cultivate daily stress reducing practices to increase joy, fulfillment, and pleasure

It's not uncommon for many of us to find passion in a particular niche, but how many of us pursue it? Today I'm speaking with Dr Sadaf Lodhi, OB-GYN, Sexual Health Coach and host of The Muslim Sex Podcast. After experiencing burnout and deciding that she needed a change, Dr Lodhi became a coach, focusing her expertise on helping women have a better understanding of their bodies and intimacy. We talk about factors that have led to so many of us being ignorant of much of Sexual Health and Menopause Health, and how she decided to pursue her interests and build a new pathway for herself.
For all my listener-clients with a passion for Breastfeeding Medicine, this episode is for you!
Dr Sadaf Lodhi is a board-certified OB-GYN, as well as a Sexual Health Coach and host of The Muslim Sex Podcast. Dr Sadaf has over 22 years of experience in Clinical Medicine, as well as Coaching Certification with Rutgers University and a Sexual Counseling and Education Certificate from the University of Michigan. She practices in New York and is opening her new practice, providing Sexual and Menopause telehealth for patients in New York and Michigan. The One In Which We Talk About How We Turn Delayed Gratification Against Ourselves.
Big sigh. Want to know how to start feeling good? Today we are talking about how being too practiced at delayed gratification (you know who you are) leads us to habitually deny ourselves rest and pleasure, often without even realizing it. Again, there are LOTS of issues with systems that contribute to this, not just the medical system or the medical training system, but also race, gender, religions and many other influences that teach us to defer pleasure now for reward later. Nothing wrong with delaying gratification some of the time. But when we do this over and over again, we stop allowing ourselves to have pleasure or rest in some very tangible ways.
Yes, we are going to talk about the challenges and importance of feeling your feelings, that is being aware of and accepting of your emotions, rather than just sitting and stewing in them, or pretending we don't feel anything. That's only a small focus of today's episode, but if you want a deeper dive, please check out these other podcast episodes:

No one wants cancer to be the thing that shakes them out of an unhappy existence. And yet, sometimes terrible circumstances give us the wake-up call that we need. Today I'm talking with Dr Isabelle Amigues, a Rheumatologist based in Denver, Colorado who found herself diagnosed with Stage IV breast cancer at the age of 40. She shares her experience of the before times, feeling stuck and unhappy, despite "having it all," and how she came to see this as a transformative event that allowed her to focus on herself, her needs, and her wants. Now in remission, she recently opened the doors of her Direct Speciality Practice, providing holistic Rheumatologic diagnosis and treatment for her patients.
During our talk, she references "The Miracle Morning" by Hal Elrod; find it here.

Circling back to the theme of "what do I want?"
Today I am thrilled to be joined by Dr Toyosi Onwuemene, a Board-Certified Hematologist, Clinician Researcher and Assistant Professor at Duke University. Dr Onwumene shares her story of navigating a path to clinical research after being told that she didn't have the necessary background. She shares her story of learning to quit people-pleasing, and how she is now coaching other Physicians who want to start a Research Position, but lack the mentorship and support they need to get started. Even if you are not in Academic Medicine, there are a lot of pearls here that we can all learn from.
Dr Toyosi Onwuemene is a board-certified Hematologist, a Clinician Researcher and an Assistant Professor at Duke University. She completed medical school and residency at Duke University prior to her Hematology Fellowship at Northwestern, and also has a Master’s in Clinical Investigation. She specializes in rare thrombotic disorders, with the goal of enabling early diagnosis and treatment to prevent complications. In addition to these roles, Dr Onwuemene is a Professional Coach for Academic Clinicians looking to build a Research Program, but lacking the Mentorship and Support to succeed.

Can you sit still for 5 minutes?
It's funny, this is a question we might ask our child (likely in an exasperated voice), but is it something that you can do? This is a common trouble spot I hear from new clients; I can't sit still, I'm always rushing, I have so much to do. And yes, there always is a lot to do for most of us. But is that the issue, or are we afraid to sit still? For many of us, sitting still with our thoughts (and the feelings that arise) feels scary, or really terrible, often because of the flurry of negative thoughts that might bubble up if we got quiet.
This is normal AND you can learn to change your experience. Want to know how? You'll have to listen in to the episode.

*Resisting the urge to make Spice Girls references here*
It's easy in the churn of our busy lives to be going through the motions, trying to keep our heads above water, running around busy and exhausted.
And, often feeling supremely dissatisfied with what's happening, and then judging ourselves for feeling this way.
In today's episode though, I tackle a harder question. Can you identify what it is that you want? If I looked you in the eye and asked this question, could you answer me?
This is an episode that may take a few listens, and definitely is good to sit down with and pull out pen and paper.
