(12/22/21) Following three straight days of selling, markets had a nice, strong rebound, climbing above the 50- and 20-DMA's, clearing the way for a bit of a rally. The not-so-good news was the relative weakness in volume, breadth, with not a lot of commitment in either direction. Markets are looking to move marginally higher today, putting us potentially into Rally-mode during the last five-days of the year, next week. Stocks that have been under-weighted, like Verizon, are now being bought in order to rebalance portfolios. Apple has also been similarly affected. The question is whether rebalancing cash will be put back to work. (12/21/21) Following Monday's sell-off, will markets keep their rally today? One thing to be careful of is what you read in the headlines--they're almost always wrong about what's happening in the markets. Despite the "rise of Omicron" and the "failure of the BBB plan" leading to yesterday's sell-off, the decline has been going on for the last three days in this time of the year: mutual fund distributions and tax-loss selling, instead of a function of inflation vs deflation trades. Markets wound up holding onto September's highs and the lows of November, closing above yesterday's opening level. Today's first challenge will be the 50-DMA, providing a measure of resistance. Our suspicion is that the multi-top, previous highs will be about all we get for the rest of the year, with any break out above not happening until January. So now is a good opportunity to rebalance risk in portfolios. We're predicting slower monetary inflows, higher interest rates, and more inflationary pressures in the New Year. (12/20/21) It's the week before Christmas, and all through the house, we're starting to think Santa is some kind of louse. There are implications from the denial of the Build Back Better Bill, with Goldman reducing economic growth forecasts for 2022 because the resultant extraction of liquidity from the market. This also suggests more pressure on profit margins with high rates of inflation as we head into the new year. Expect light trading during this holiday-shortened week. When will the selling stop? We need to see a support rally over the next couple of days if we're going to see a Santa Claus Rally come into play before Christmas. Technicals would indicate, however, any such action is likely to occur in the last five-days of the month. The first five-days of January also tend to be typically stronger for stocks. But...there are no guarantees. The Fed is talking about hiking interest rates faster than expected, tapering the Fed's balance sheet faster than expected, and with less liquidity anticipated, and higher inflation impacting consumer spending, there are concerns for stocks in the short term. (12/16/21) Markets loved the Fed's announcement that tapering will commence, and the rate of change in rates will be accelerate: Three interest rate hikes in 2022, and three more in 2023. If inflation continues to rage (now termed "non-transitory"), there is a likelihood those rate hikes will become even more fast and furious. This more-hawkish mood of the Fed did not deter markets, rising sharply on the announcement, and the S&P could hit 4700 over the next few days. Markets are, however, very over-bought, limiting the upside somewhat. The recent selling has been a function of mutual fund "window dressing" as year-end approaches. Of continuing concern lately has been the lack of volume--even in yesterday's strong rally. And, markets are now set-up for the classic, end-of-the-year rally. (12/15/21) Here's an inside look at the technical parameters we use to set up stop losses on positions in our portfolios. "Setting a stop" is like drawing a line in the sand, beyond which you are not willing to lose money on a stock. Let's look at Apple--a stock that's currently trading at three standard deviations above its moving average--which is very extended, and ripe for a pullback. The first thing you might want to do is take profits...then determine at what point you'd want to remove it from your portfolio. Where are the 20- and 50-DMA? Moving averages work well because they move over time, and indicate previous levels of support--another tool in setting up stop-losses. Stops are not an all-or-nothing proposition; you can reduce just a portion of your holdings in a company, too. We look at previous trend lines for price support. A break in a rising trend line is a key clue in where to place the stop.
