More important, the look-out for earnings going forward, as corporate earnings undergo pressure. Markets are looking for some justification for over-paying for assets. Market rally was decent, but limited; as we enter back half of July, we could see a correction. The current set-up is similar to the patterns seen in April, with sell signals at high levels with positive money flows, resulting in market stagnation before correction. What happens if 200-DMA is pierced? That makes more room for rates to fall--counter-intuitive to the narrative the economy is "booming." This suggests not only that we're seeing the peak of current economic growth, but also weaker earnings growth in the future. This would suggest that earnings estimates are way too elevated for the kind of economy Treasury Yields are indicating ahead. However--exceptionally strong markets in first half of a year tend to be the peak over the course of the next couple of years. Historically, years that follow typically have negative market returns. Markets are up 16% so far in 2021--that's a 32% return on an annualized basis. But beneath the surface, there is less positive action being seen, with mid- and small-cap stocks struggling. Money is "hiding" in highly-liquid areas of the market, such as large-cap stocks. Watch for a period of relative weakness in August and September, and the risk for corrective action.
