  • Making Relationships Work with Dr Jennifer Thomas

John chats to Dr Jennifer Thomas, a Motivational Speaker specialising in the 5 Love Languages and Communication. She is a Business Consultant, Psychologist, TedX speaker on ‘The 2 Essentials for Healthy Relationships.’ and Co-author of ‘The 5 Apology Languages’ and ‘Making Things Right at Work’. Her passion is to help people to find the match between how they are trying to express love and appreciation, express apologies, and what the other person in the relationship is looking for.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Relationship solutions and communication techniques are also very useful in the workplace.
    • The 5 Love Languages are the 5 types of communication that we use within loving relationships, and understanding the dynamics between them can facilitate better communication.
    • The 5 Apology Languages are the different ways in which we make and accept apologies.
    • Regular maintenance is important in relationships including holidays, breaks and events spent with partners only.
    • It is not good communication to use the words ‘always’, ’never’, ’every’, ’all’ and ‘none’. They can result in sweeping generalities that can cause offence.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘Too often we tire ourselves out trying to guess what our partners want. My passion is to help people actually learn to ask those questions like ‘What do you need from me? What really lands with you?’-Jennifer

‘We have profiles for both Love Languages and Apology Languages and then we give the whole team the results of the profile so that they can refer back to it.’-Jennifer

‘You can lose sight of your own dreams and your own ambitions and what you want with your relationships as well.’-John

‘It really boils down to two simple things and that is that we need to be able to express love and appreciation to the people that are closest to us. That fills up the love tank. But there is a threat to love tank and that is when we mess up so the second essential is the Apology Languages.’-Jennifer

  • How to Create Deeper Relationships

John believes that to live fulfilling and happy lives we must cultivate the best relationships possible. In this episode, he will explain some of the best ways to achieve this, whatever type of relationship it is including partners, family members, friends, colleagues or acquaintances.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Be present and intentional. The modern pace of life can hinder spending time with others and distract you if you do.
    • Do not interrupt, and clarify what you hear. This requires empathy which is another component in building connections.
    • Communicate openly and clearly. This is the foundation for a successful relationship. This can bridge any gaps in wants and needs in the future.
    • Validating and empowering each other through being generous in response can be essential in making each other happy.
    • Celebrate your successes. Joint achievements and celebrating your partners successes will increase the bond between you.
    • Learn how to self-soothe. If you can manage your own wellbeing you can then be more present with others.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘As human beings we have developed as a species to need, crave, in early life to survive through connecting with others.’

‘Make a conscious effort to be present and focused on your interactions. Put away your phone and anything else that could distract you.’

‘If you are putting yourself into a perceived vulnerable space then you don’t feel safe and rather than being able to be present your mind will be racing off into another space entirely.’

‘One word that I don’t really like when it comes to finding a healthy balance in relationships is ‘compromise’. On the whole this is seen as a word that means you are giving something up and in your brain this can trigger all sorts of resistance.’

  • Raise Your Vibration with Karen Roberts

John interviews Karen Roberts, creator of the 6 Figures and Beyond Academy. She helps women who are overstressed, overwhelmed and underpaid. After 27 years in the fitness industry, owning her fitness studio in the Algarve and running numerous sports injury clinics across London, Karen left in 2016 to work as a coach for an online education company.

After working on many coaching teams selling programs for others, she created her own, now she focuses on helping struggling coaches get their messages heard, grow their audience and get more sales as the owner of Mintwave radio station and creating the Raising Vibrations podcast network.

John and Karen discuss how she came to be helping the coaching industry, keeping fit fun and fitting it in, her relationships and how they have influenced her career, and the importance of being open-minded.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Karen created The Directory to help the public identify the right coach for their needs.
    • Karen also offers an outlet for coaches through her radio station, Mintwave and through the Raising Vibrations podcast network.
    • Realising that she enjoyed the energy from addressing groups, Karen set up her coaching program and arranged during lockdown a multi-speaker event with 20 different coaches from different specialities.
    • Relationships are crucial to Karen and have motivated almost all the decisions she has made throughout her career.
    • Be open to advise and information, even if at first it seems a bit ‘woo woo’!

    BEST MOMENTS

‘I had this idea of creating a directory really for the public as well, to come and find the right fit for them.’-Karen

‘Rather than have a ‘one size fits all’ it’s ‘what do you want’? Do you want to come and be a guest to get your message heard? Do you want to have your own show? Do you need help with the tech and the boring stuff?’-Karen

‘It was for my own mental health, I think, I needed something to focus on and something to offer.’-Karen

‘I think that’s one of the things that keeps me interested in life and that’s learning all the time.’-John

‘We all need help. To think that we can do everything by ourselves is crazy, really, and there’s really no need.’-Karen

  • Ways to Build Your Dating Confidence

Dating can be quite nerve-wracking for many but John has a few ways to make the whole experience much calmer and easier to approach as well as make the changes needed to attract the right kind of relationship partner to suit your needs.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Find your centre before you date, a routine, perhaps, to help you feel calm and collected.
    • Affirm how you are going to feel to manage your triggers and keep yourself in a good headspace.
    • Know what you want in a partner and consider it to focus your mind on any positive or negative signs that may arise.
    • Be honest with your date about your interest or lack of interest in them.
    • Consider topics of conversation or open-ended questions that can allow you to get to know them.
    • Consider eventually being open with how you feel, what you want and need can deepen connection.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘Even if you are a serial dater and have it down to a tee, there may be things that you can do that will make you feel more comfortable about the whole experience.’

‘Practice positive self-talk. Focus on your strengths and why people are lucky to have you in their lives and possibly how lucky this new person will be too.’

‘Dressing to impress in ways that build your confidence, makes you feel comfortable and actually makes you feel yourself will help you to feel good when you walk into any situation.’

‘Part of my coaching is to help people overcome these blocks of giving of themselves in relationships because it can be a big barrier to creating fulfilling relationships.’

  • Aligned With Love with Matt And Rebeca

John talks to Relationship Therapists Matt and Rebeca, founders of Aligned With Love: Relationship Breakthrough, specialists in guiding couples and individuals through their journey to have the loving, passionate relationship of their dreams. Matt works with men and Rebecca works with women, and they combine forces to work as a couple with couples. Matt & Rebecca are Certified Coaches, Clinician Hypnotherapists, Master NLP Practitioners, Cognitive Behavioural Therapists, Emotional Freedom Therapists, Psychotherapists and EMDR practitioners. They also co-host The Relationship Breakthrough Podcast, available on all major platforms.

John, Matt and Rebeca discuss the varied models of their counselling style, limiting beliefs and how we acquire them, how our parents affect our later actions and working as a couple.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Being a couple and working with couples is an advantageous model as the challenges of working with men and women can be quite different but communication one on one is critical also.
    • Male and female group events help discussion of different issues with peers and allow new friendships to form.
    • Clearly defined boundaries and aims are essential to a functional relationship.
    • Limiting inaccurate beliefs assumed during our upbringing often restrict our choices within relationships.
    • Humility and humour are key in a relationship when working together.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘A lot of people when they hear about that can be a bit surprised (counselling as a couple) but a lot of people also feedback on how well it works because of the danger when it’s one or the other of us it could feel a bit unbalanced.’–Matt

‘In the journey that we take people through, there are some points where we speak to individuals separately which is critical. At the end of the day it all boils down to the relationship we have to ourselves, so that’s why it’s critical to work individually as well.’–Rebeca

‘I think that’s an important point, isn’t it? That you in your mind did what you thought was the thing you needed to do because that’s what you were used to, without realising at that time that you had a choice.’–John

‘In our business relationship, there’s a level of accountability. If we say we are going to do something we follow through and we try to hold ourselves and each other accountable.’-Matt

‘Ideas come in the shower. They don’t come when you are rushing and you have a deadline.’-Rebeca

  • What is Happiness ?

John delves into one of those age-old questions that are discussed throughout life; ‘What is happiness?’ He sheds some light on what happiness looks like, feels like, and how it can be attained.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • A meaningfully led life is not necessarily a happy one without some focus on one’s wants and needs.
    • Temporary ‘fixes’ of happiness such as excitement and achievement of goals tend to not be sources of long-term happiness.
    • Happiness is not a destination to be reached.
    • Research has found that pleasure, engagement and connection, quality relationships, and meaning of purpose provide consistent happiness.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘It’s obviously a very personal thing to feel or be happy and we are all very different and complicated beings and therefore we will have our own ways and feelings and thoughts about what is right for us.’

‘Have you heard of toxic positivity? This is where you try to put a positive spin on things all of the time and ignore the fact that you have negative feelings or address the issues that aren’t very good for you.’

‘Practice gratitude or appreciation. My program suggests a gratitude diary so that you keep on top of things that you are grateful for or appreciate all the time.’

  • Achieve Your Legacy Via Video With Noleen Sliney

Noleen Sliney is a Video Confidence & Personal Power Mentor. She helps entrepreneurs who are leaders, changemakers and visionaries who desire to achieve things that are even bigger than them, to use the power of video to BECOME and create their legacy.

Known as “The Video Visibility Queen” she now helps her clients to skyrocket their video confidence, supercharge their selling confidence, become a magnet to their soul-aligned clients, and make a greater impact.

John and Noleen discuss the journey towards her chosen career, the fear of visual media, the difference video can make to a business, deconstructing childhood conditioning, mentoring, and the place and importance of connection in your life.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Noleen helps her clients overcome their nervousness and increases their confidence when on video media.
    • A video presentation can revolutionise a business. Energy and passion can be expressed much more efficiently visually.
    • To differentiate between you and your competitors, a visual presentation can communicate who you are and your values, allowing a strong initial connection between you and your potential client.
    • Noleen helps fix the damage done to people’s self-esteem and confidence by damaging childhood conditioning.
    • Relationships should not include abuse of you, even your relationship with yourself.

    BEST MOMENTS
‘With the video confidence and personal power mentorship what I do now again also really stems from my own experience. I had real blocks around being visible, even photos.’ – Noleen
‘Business now is more about relationship building and building those connections to those people. And again, I know I keep using that word connection, but it is.’ – Noleen
‘I was brought up in a household where if I was trying to appear to be something and boost myself, I was a ‘show off’ or being arrogant. It was very much crushed and you’re not allowed to do that type of thing.’ – John
‘When you go on these journeys yourself and level up, there are going to be people who are going to be triggered by that. What I realised was that it wasn’t necessarily about me.’ – Noleen

  • Shift Your Limiting Beliefs with Mandy Evill

John interviews Mindset and Performance Coach Mandy Evill. She coaches entrepreneurs and business leaders to improve their mindset, leverage their unique skills and abilities and improve the profitability of their businesses. Through her organisation The Infinite Mind Company she has helped clients meet their maximum potential. She is also Co-founder and Director of Africa Transformation Centres Foundation which, through mindset training, provides the tools, education, and awareness for the young men and women of Africa to transform their thinking and beliefs, empowering them to create sustainable and thriving economic futures for themselves, their communities, and their country for generations to come.

In this episode, John and Mandy discuss her beginnings in personal development, of what her coaching method comprises, and how mindset relates to achievement, relationships and our own emotions.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Mandy has been working in personal development for over 20 years, starting like many coaches, from a crisis point in her life.
    • Everything comes from how we think and what beliefs are, so that is the area that Mandy’s coaching method concentrates on in a sixth-month program taught to her by her Mentor Bob Proctor.
    • If we just have negative beliefs then we begin to manifest those beliefs in reality just simply by constantly focusing our attention on them.
    • Everyone can make the shift to challenge their core beliefs but not all are willing. The change has to be conscious and you have to be willing to confront difficulties out of your comfort zone.
    • All relationships are significant because we do not operate in isolation.
    • Our conscious mind is the only place where we have absolute control. Do we want to react to an external circumstance or a person, or do we want to respond? If we react, we are giving our power away.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘Success and achievement is a system, not hard work.’ – Mandy

‘It was interesting because I actually still ended up about 15 years later getting stuck which didn’t figure. I was very successful, I’d got my own business, but I still knew I could do more’ – Mandy

‘If they know what they don’t want, people start focusing on what they don’t want. When you are focusing on what you don’t want, you begin to create more of what you don’t want.’ - Mandy

‘That’s a really interesting point that you made there, that your energy goes to where you focus so if you focus on everything you’re trying to avoid  you just keep finding everything you’re trying to avoid.’ – John

‘I love that. That’s just beautiful. “How you’re interacting with yourself.” And given you’re a relationship coach. If you’re not interacting well with yourself, how the hell are you going to go out there and have great relationships with other people?” – Mandy

‘My attitude to anything is a measure of who I’m being. That’s how I like to continue to live my life and expand my life.’ – Mandy

‘That’s a massive lesson to learn when you’re a lot younger. I’m not responsible for how you feel, you are. I might do something you don’t like or that you do like, which then elicits some kind of emotional response, but it’s still your emotional response.’ – John

  • Passive Agressive Behaviour

Most people know someone who is referred to as having passive-aggressive behaviour, but what does it mean and what negative effects can it have on our relationships? John explains why so many people resort to passive aggression, how it is utilised and how you can identify and address your own behaviour.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Passive Aggression can be defined as ‘sugar-coated hostility’. It is aggression presented in a passive way which makes it easily missed, difficult to define and easily denied if pointed out.
    • Passive Aggressive people take advantage of the behaviour’s plausible deniability, direct aggression is very much more quantifiable by the target whereas passive aggression always has the option of ‘that’s not what I meant’.
    • Look out for sulking and silent treatment, very common behaviours in someone who employs passive aggression. Huffing, sighing, tutting and slamming doors are also ways of expressing aggression without actually addressing the issue.
    • Do you find yourself avoiding people that you’re upset with? Do you punish others by putting things off, turning up late or just not doing things? Then you may have passive-aggressive traits.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘Passive-aggressive behaviour is a pattern of expressing negative feelings indirectly instead of addressing them openly.’

‘It’s not, in itself, a mental illness but gets people’s needs met in a maladaptive way.’

‘They may use sarcasm, or ‘banter’. I personally very much dislike the word ‘banter’ as to me it always seems  to mean ‘I’m insulting you or being rude, but I’m only joking.’

‘Bearing a grudge is a common passive aggressive trait.’

‘Recognising your own behaviours is the first step to change but give yourself some time to implement the changes as you are likely to meet some resistance within you when you do so.’

  • How to Manage a Divorce With Tom Nash

Tom Nash is Mr Divorce Coach, an internationally certified coach specialising in divorce, separation and family. Divorce and separation matters are often well served by solicitors but so often the emotional aspect is overlooked and under-supported. Tom guides his clients from their decision to separate through the difficult practicalities and responsibilities including children’s reactions to the situation, keeping a beneficial non-acrimonious relationship with an ex-partner and dealing with the changed dynamic involved with the dissolution of a partnership.

His expertise places him regularly in the media from BBC Radio to The Times and recently, an appearance on ITV’s This Morning.

John and Tom discuss his beginnings in Divorce Coaching, modern blended families, guilt and self-resentment, co-parenting and role models.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Tom originally comes from Business and Life Coaching but has become a specialist in Divorce and Separation Coaching due to his own experience with divorce.
    • He is trained in Neuro Linguistic Programming techniques, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Timeline Therapy and Hypnotherapy.
    • Stepfamilies and blended families are another area in which Tom specialises. A huge number of families are now categorised as blended by the Office of National Statistics with over 3.7 million included.
    • Sometimes co-parenting can be impossible and then parallel parenting is the only option, with very strict boundaries and rules in place but most co-parenting arrangements can be formed to create maximum benefit to all involved.
    • Each person involved in a divorce has a different viewpoint of the events and emotions involved in separation.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘It was due to personal lived experience of going through a divorce, separation, family courts, child arrangement orders or custody. I was originally going to use those coaching skills in the corporate world where I come from but due to the experience of going through my own divorce and separation, it was actually my partner I have to give credit to who said one night ‘You could use these skills to help other people.’’ – Tom

‘My parents divorced when I was 9 and step mum and my mum got a new partner and stuff with their kids but it wasn’t the norm.’ – John

‘You have to work backwards and start somewhere and first of all, it’s about identifying what the true emotions are, what the true feelings are behind that. The behaviours that come from thought plus feeling equals behaviour.’ – Tom

‘I felt so much shame and self-resentment. It was the one thing I’d always said to myself when I was younger, my one personal vow to myself , that I would never break, and did.’ – Tom

‘I’m one of those very weird people in life that loves ironing. At 3-4 o’clock I put something on TV or I put my headphones on and iron the kids' uniforms. That’s come from the relationship with my dad of actually seeing, in the 80’s, a male role model doing his fair share of the housework.’ – Tom
