The Serial Killer Podcast

The women who vanished from the Downtown Eastside in 1995 were not the community’s only victims that year; they were just the ones whose fate was not known. People were finally talking about a serial killer hunting for victims in the Downtown Eastside when, in August 1995, the battered body of thirty-year-old Tracy Olajide was found in a wooded area near the Agassiz Mountains, about fifty kilometres east of Vancouver. Tammy Pipe’s body was found three weeks later, on the 6th of September, about nine kilometres from the site where Olajide’s body had been dumped. The third victim in this group, found by a hunter near Mission, was Victoria Younker, thirty-five. Each was a prostitute from the Downtown Eastside, each was an addict, and all three had been living in the Vernon Rooms hotel at the intersection of Hastings and Vernon.

This is a serial killer case so twisted it could easily have been ripped straight from the classic horror film Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Our subject is somewhat infamous in the West, especially in Canada, but for some reason has not reached the levels of infamy as the darkest serial killer superstars. This strikes me as rather odd considering that not only did our subject murder far more innocent people than most serial killers, at least 26, but the method of murder and setting for the murders are extremely bizarre and revolting. I am of course talking about none other than Robert William Willie Pickton, the Pigfarm Killer.

He dragged her, still screaming, around the back where there were a set of stairs leading down to the basement. He pushed her up against the basement door and beat her a couple more time to make her stop screaming, which she did. Then he started to savagely rip off her clothes. When he managed to rip away her undergarments, he started to rape Olga. As he did so, she started moaning in pain and this probably saved her from being murdered. One of the families in the apartment block had heard her earlier screams, but had not acted on them as they had stopped. But when they heard a woman moaning in agony right below their apartment, they realised they needed to do something.

Tonight we travel east to the ancient country of Romania. I have actually covered a killer from Romania before, namely the Blood Countess herself, Erzebet Bathory. Back then, it wasn’t strictly Romania, but the massive empire of Austria-Hungary. In this episode, however, we find ourselves in a more modern time period. The killer is perhaps not as bloodthirsty as old Erzebet, but he was extremely wicked, shockingly evil and vile nonetheless. I am of course talking about none other than Ion Rimaru, the Butcher of Bucharest, murderer of at least four human beings.

Imagine if you will, dear listener, Yosemite National Park in California, USA. It is a place of unparalleled beauty. Clear streams running through wide forested valleys ringed by tumbling waterfalls. Above the valley towers awe-inspiring mountaintops that are famous the world over. If you have Apple TV, you are probably accustomed to seeing the slow moving film of Yosemite’s Half Dome and El Capital looming above Yosemite Valley. Tourists flock to the national park in the millions every year, and even your humble host has visited Yosemite when he was 13 years old way back in 1994. I remember the trip to Yosemite vividly and urge all my dear listeners to go there if you have the opportunity to do so. But, take safety precautions. The most dangerous animal in Yosemite National Park is not the mountain lion, but man.

The last episode in this saga concluded with the horrific murder of Lee Iseli. A crime so brutal and heinous that it deeply affected your humble host. I am probably going to wait a while before covering pedophilic serial killers again, this exposé has been taxing. Tonight, we rein in and wrap up the tale of Westley Allan Dodd`s life and crimes. I am particularly going to go into great detail about the one thing that gave Dodd a modicum of fame aside from his murders: namely his execution.

In this episode we come to the penultimate episode in our tale of The Vancouver Child Killer. Dodd’s actions are so depraved and heinous that I had severe trouble getting through this episode. The material is not speculative, but it is the truth. It is ugly and horrible. I hope that it will serve to remind us all of what monsters walk amongst us. So again; listener discretion is advised.

On the surface, there was nothing remarkable about Larry Lavin. He lived in a quiet neighborhood with his wife and family, drove a Volvo, and practiced dentistry in Philadelphia. But, from 1978 to 1984, Dr. Lavin ran one of the largest cocaine enterprises on the entire eastern seaboard.

Through the voices and perspectives of law enforcement, drug runners, friends, business associates and Larry Lavin himself, Wolves Among Us, Season One, The Larry Lavin Story, tells the story of Lavin’s dual life, his impact on Philadelphia culture in the late 70s and early 80s, and the stunning events that led to his capture.

Wolves Among Us is a presentation and creation of Peabody-nominated C13Originals, a Cadence13 Studio.

In this episode, the subject matter is gruesome to the extreme. One of the most depraved and vile serial killers to ever have walked the earth. He did not kill very many people, only 3 confirmed kills to his name. But the victims he carefully chose and the way he murdered them makes him the pinnacle of true malice. A pedophile, rapist and murderer of 3 innocent young boys, Westley Allen Dodd – The Vancouver Child Killer.
