The Serial Killer Podcast

The story of Gary Leon Ridgway is a challenging story. Not just because so many books, films, and documentaries have already been made about him, but because there simply are so many victims and to struggle with how proper respect to their memory can be given. Much ado has been made in the media, and in previous episodes, about how most of the killer’s victims were prostitutes. I wonder if the same emphasis had been made on the victims’ profession if they had been accountants. Well, to be honest, I actually do think much had been made of such a scenario. A serial killer killing dozens of female accountants had truly been quite unique.

Imagine if you will, dear listener, several nights earlier, the 17th of July, 1982. The by now well-known maroon pick-up truck slowed to a stop and the driver leant out of his window at the young woman standing alone, under a streetlamp. Hands on hips, Gisele Lovvorn, strode towards him. "Looking for a good time, honey?" she called in a weary voice. He gestured her into the vehicle.

Once on the road, the girl's tries to give the man directions to a place she knows. The man just shakes his head and says he wants to do it outside, it’s such a pretty night and he doesn’t want to mess up his car. ‘Don’t worry’, he says, ‘it’s not far, you’ll be back in no time’. She’s still uncertain and looks as if she’s getting cold feet. ‘Hey, really, I’m safe, ok. Here, take a look at this’ he says as he produces his wallet with the photos of his kid and wife. ‘My wife and I have been having trouble, I love her and all, but a man’s got needs you know?’ The girl relaxes at this. Sure, she understands. She tells him he’s not alone in feeling that way at all. Lots of men have it like that, she knows that for sure. She doesn’t notice it, but the man’s face hardens a bit as she says that.

The six year old boy enters the woods. He is shy, he’s not used to big boys paying him any attention. The stranger smiles and asks if the boy wants to build a fort with him. They can defend against the Apaches there, together. Wow! The boy is amazed, he gladly follows the youth deeper into the woods. After walking a bit, the bigger boy suddenly stops. He smirks and says to the kid, "You know, there’s uh, there’s people around here that, that like to kill little boys like you.”

She was stripped naked below her waist, and there was clear evidence she had been raped. Semen stains were found on top of the girl's thigh. Her killer had stabbed her in the left side of the chest, however, the cause of death was pressure on the neck resulting from strangulation. In other words; the killer was not only motivated by paedophilic urges but sadistic ones as well. The knife had been sliced...
