The Serial Killer Podcast

The day after Kemper purchased the revolver, police officers knocked on his door to confiscate it. Kemper was compliant and surrendered the weapon without incident. The officers joked with the man and assured him that this procedure was purely protocol, and it was. The officers visiting his house had no idea that the huge man on the other side of the door was the serial killer they were desperately trying to find. This incident shook Kemper’s new-found confidence. Although the officers had assured him that everything was fine, Kemper couldn’t shake the paranoia that told him that the cops were surely on to him.

I have the honour of having, as a featured guest, the esteemed Jillian Lauren; one of the women responsible for bringing Samuel Little to justice. Yes, the Samuel Little. None other than the premier serial killer in all of North America.

Only the Green River Killer ever came close to matching Little’s kill count. Samuel Little, who went under the radar as a serial killer for decades, has admitted to murdering 93 innocent women. You can rest assured that I will feature a series dedicated to his life and crimes in later episodes, but in this episode I have the pleasure of discussing the case, and other topics, with Jillian Lauren.

Jillian Lauren is a writer, storyteller and adoption advocate, with a love for kickboxing. She is the New York Times bestselling author of the memoirs Everything You Ever Wanted and SOME GIRLS: My Life in a Harem as well as the novel Pretty. SOME GIRLS, in which she recounts her time spent in the harem of the Prince of Brunei, has been translated into eighteen languages. She is also the only journalist so far who have extensively interviewed Samuel Little, the most prolific serial killer in North American history. This experience is what solidified her immense passion for using her platform in the realm of True Crime journalism to prioritize the rights of the surviving families of deceased victims.

Chronicled in Joe Berlinger’s hit STARZ documentary series, CONFRONTING A SERIAL KILLER, and in Michael Connelly’s podcast MURDER BOOK: The Women Who Brought Down Samuel Little, Ms Lauren shines a light on the importance of justice for the people who loved those lost to violent tragedies.

Imagine, if you will, dear listener, a huge man sitting alone in his apartment. He’s not so much fat as he simply is big. Yes, he has a significant paunch, but his arms and legs are muscular and he is broad shouldered. Most of all he is tall. The apartment seems almost comically small when he sits in the living room. Edmund Kemper has blood on his hands, and he is looking at them. A few moments ago, he returned from his first foray into sexualized predatory murder and he is both elated and disappointed.

We continue on our sojourn into the twisted nightmare that is the life of the co-ed killer; Edmund Kemper. It is strange writing about these serial killer superstars. Many of them seem to flourish at the tail end of the hippie movement, i.e. the late 1960s and early 70s. It is, in a way, as if the innocence of the peace and love movement birthed something dark into the world, something monstrous, something that hungers for nothing but the suffering of others.

Over the years, this show has included some fascinating and rare interviews you will be hard pressed to find elsewhere. Tonight is no exception. Not only do I speak to a man who is a true aficionado of serial killer lore, but he comes from the very place tonight’s topic took and takes place. And the place, dear listener, is somewhere we in the West seldom gets too much information about. I am of course talking about the great nation of South Africa. My guest and interviewee tonight is none other than Mr. Romano Dolbey

Imagine if you will, dear listener, a land of ice and fire. An island, surrounded on all sides by thousands of kilometres of open ocean. 1472 km to the east lies most of its inhabitant’s original homeland, Norway. To the south, 1233km away, lies Scotland. To the west, 1210km away, lies Greenland and finally, about 2500km to the north; the arctic icecap surrounding the north pole. During the Viking era, around 800 AD, thousands of Norwegians fled and/or emigrated from Norway to Iceland

In the early spring of 2003, the police finally got another break on the evidence. Tests of materials taken from two other victims—Debbie Estes, “Muffin” to her family, and Wendy Coffield, the first victim found in the Green River in July of 1982—showed faint traces of a particular kind of paint globule otherwise found only at the Kenworth plant. Based on the Estes and Coffield evidence, the authorities decided to add victim Dub Bonner to the list of charged murders as well, bringing the total to seven. But beyond that, there simply wasn’t enough evidence to link Gary Ridgway to all the remaining Green River murders.

Imagine if you will, dear listener, Theodore Robert Bundy sitting across from Robert Keppel in an interview room at Florida State Prison. The room is grey, the furniture non-descript. Keppel has just laid a photo on the table in front of Bundy. The photograph is turned upside down. Bundy eagerly reaches for it. Keppel has planned this for a good while. The deal with Bundy was that they were not to discuss the crimes for which Bundy was charged, only the Green River case.
