On this episode of the podcast I have a very important conversation with former Elite Gymnast and now Coach Luke Carson around all things mental health. An open honest conversation about the pandemic and being in gymnastics right now with the recent scandals and publicity around culture change. It's a tough time for those working in gymnastics to keep a good head space; we discuss how to have a better open conversation about anxiety, depression and stress and what people can do to de-stigmatise these issues. Sharing are own personal stories and what we did to help us move forward.
This is the 100th episode of The SHIFT Show and the podcast! Thank you to everyone who has been listening and helped the podcast grow over the last two years. Turning it into a medium and a space to have really important conversations that are having a positive impact on gymnastics and people lives. I want to continue to help people learn the information they want to know and be a vessel to spread it across the gymnastics world wide community. This special 100th features the legendary Aimee Boorman who was Simone Biles coach and many other great gymnasts. I wanted to make sure we had a conversation to provide the most value to people in terms of what’s happening now in our community but then also what’s happening down the road. Aimee is an amazing human but she also an amazing example of the benefits and abilities that can happen with positive coaching which is the big change we are seeing now in our sport. Thanks again for listening and I really appreciate everyones support with SHIFT.
We appreciate you listening!

A massively valuable podcast with Dr Michelle Flemons who is an associate Professor at the University of Bedfordshire in the UK. She is a Senior Lecturer and has a PHD in Sport Pedagogy and Physical Education. A former Elite Gymnast who trained with the Junior National Team of Hong Kong and is still involved in coaching today. We look at how you get away from “that’s the way we’ve always done it”; how do you get change? How do you get belief systems to change? How you deal with people who are going through conflict in gymnastics? We talk about why this sport is so stubborn and what can be done to help people chance, to help the sport move forward to a happier, healthier way.

This weeks podcast I chat to Scott Willgrass one of the strength and conditioning coaches working with Gymnastics Canada and Ellie Black. He is one of many who is pushing the narrative of changing how we approach strength and conditioning in the sport of gymnastics. We dive into how he got started, the common problems he faced and mistakes he made, dig into what Ellie’s training looks like and what he thinks performance wise we can do to get gymnasts more powerful, faster and have more endurance.

A highly requested episode featuring Dr Ellen Casey who is the Sports Medicine Physician for the US Women’s Senior National Team and frequent flyer on the podcast Nick Ruddock. We tackle an open, honest, candid conversation about puberty, growth and how we can better help younger athletes during this time.

This week I talk to USA MAG Coach Paul Sargysan who has outstanding technical knowledge and he represents someone who really cares about his athletes and the culture that he builds in his gym is positive, respectful and focused on work ethic. Using gymnastics as a vessel to get really great values taught to his athletes. In the podcast we dive into how he builds that culture, how he approaches communication and conflict and hard decisions around getting too and competing at the high level, managing injuries and doing what’s best for the athletes in the long run.
