The Spooky Linings Playlist

With the recent release of the Child’s Play remake, we thought we’d take a look back at another remake of a classic slasher franchise that might be the most divisive film in its series. Halloween (2007), directed by Rob Zombie, is an interesting take on the Michael Meyers story that’s plagued with unlikeable characters, joyless death scenes, and of course, Rob Zombie’s signature white trash touch.

Halloween (2007) stars Malcolm McDowell, Sheri Moon Zombie, Tyler Mane, Scout Taylor-Compton, Brad Dourif, Danielle Harris, and William Forsythe. Directed by Rob Zombie.

The Number 23, directed by Joel Schumacher, is one of those mystery thrillers that raises more questions than it answers. How does Walter forget he wrote the novel? Why doesn't the bookstore owner recognize him? If Walter and Agatha met nine years ago, why is their son almost old enough to drive a car? Unfortunately, we don't have many answers, but we've got a lot to talk about when it comes to this 8-percent-on-Rotten-Tomatoes movie.

The Number 23 stars Jim Carrey, Virginia Madsen, Logan Lerman, and Danny Huston. Directed by Joel Schumacher.

Mike Nichol's The Graduate from 1967 is a romantic comedy unlike any other, and the fact that it still holds up over half a century later is a testament to that fact. In a world where comedies require a joke a minute, The Graduate isn't afraid to let itself breathe for the sake of servicing a better story. But not every romantic comedy can conclude with "and they lived happily ever after..."

The Graduate stars Anne Bancroft, Dustin Hoffman, Katharine Ross, William Daniels, Murray Hamilton, Brian Avery, and Buck Henry. Directed by Mike Nichols.

Dario Argento's Suspiria is widely lauded for its unorthodox approach to horror. Bright colors, subtlety, and an imposing score redefined horror way back in the '70s. Now, almost forty years later, Luca Guadagnino's reimagining of the cult classic tries to invoke the same emotion and response, but maybe not so successfully. Suspiria (2018) is a well-crafted, well-directed, and well-performed film, but somehow doesn't deliver on its promise.

Suspiria (2018) stars Dakota Johnson, Tilda Swinton, Mia Goth, Sylvie Testud, Lutz Ebersdorf, Jessica Harper, Chloë Grace Moretz, and Renée Soutendijk. Directed by Luca Guadagnino.

What was once a promising anthology series, the "Cloververse" has stumbled with its third release, which isn't surprising considering The Cloverfield Paradox is barely a Cloverfield movie at all. Boring archetype characters, lazy screenwriting, and a premise that falls flat on its face after the first twenty minutes, this film should disappear from the franchise like The Cloverfield Space Station.

The Cloverfield Paradox stars Daniel Brühl, Elizabeth Debicki, Aksel Hennie, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Chris O'Dowd, John Ortiz, David Oyelowo, Zhang Ziyi, Roger Davies, Clover Nee, Donal Logue, Simon Pegg, and  Greg Grunberg. Directed by Julius Onah.

See how Cloverfield (2008) and The Cloverfield Paradox (2018) sync up.

"Snape kills Dumbledore" is probably the most well-known spoiler in all of modern literature and cinema, right next to the Darth Vader revelation in The Empire Strikes Back. But there's so much more to Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince than just that moment, all of which we'll cover in this week's episode. Plus, Dustin gets sorted into his Hogwarts' House, Dustin & Mallie rank the Harry Potter films, and much, much more.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince stars Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson, Helena Bonham-Carter, Bonnie Wright, Jim Broadbent, Michael Gambon, and Alan Rickman. Directed by David Yates.

Before the Insidious and Conjuring Universes, all the way back in 2004, James Wan and partner Leigh Whannel made a small, simple movie that would shake up horror in film forever. Saw is a testament that with an iconic character, a catchy premise, and word of mouth, even a movie on a modest $1.2 million budget can go a long, long way. 15 years later, does the original in this long standing series deserve its place on the Mount Rushmore of horror franchises? We’ll find out.

Saw stars Cary Elwes, Leigh Whannell, Danny Glover, Ken Leung, Monica Potter, Makenzie Vega, Michael Emerson, and Dina Meyer. Directed by James Wan.

Most of the movies we cover on this show end in very depressing, somber ways. Sometimes, however, the endings are just straight up weird. And Sorry to Bother You has "weird" in spades. This one is blaxploitation at its finest.

Sorry to Bother You stars LaKeith Stanfield, Tessa Thompson, Steven Yeun, Armie Hammer, Terry Crews, Omari Hardwick, Patton Oswalt, Danny Glover, and David Cross. Directed by Boots Riley.

Once deemed "unfilmable", Zack Snyder attempted to do the impossible with 2009's Watchmen, and in our opinion he did a phenomenal job. Extenestialism, thermonuclear politics, violence, romance, whodunits...this film manages to balance it all pretty well.

Watchmen stars Billy Crudup, Matthew Goode, Carla Gugino, Malin Akerman, Jackie Earle Haley, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Patrick Wilson, Matt Frewer and Gary Houston. Directed by Zack Snyder.

It just wouldn’t be right if The Wicker Man was the only Nic Cage movie we covered on the show. So to make amends for this obvious atrocity, we’re bringing you one of the most absurd Cage movies ever. If the world literally explodes, is it possible to find a silver lining? We’ll find out in this week’s episode on 2009’s Knowing.

Knowing stars Nicolas Cage, Chandler Canterbury, Rose Byrne, Lara Robinson, Phil Beckman, and Nadia Townsend. Directed by Alex Proyas.
