Financial Planner Luke Smith joined 2CC Talking Canberra in Money Matters, that aired live on Friday 20 March 2026. The topic is: 2026 Market Volatility- How do I manage it and are there opportunities?

Events in the world can affect financial markets, and that’s happening right now. This can feel unsettling. Ongoing conflict in the Middle East, along with uncertainty about what the US President may do next, is putting pressure on markets. So, as an investor, what should you do?

Thank you for joining us live on 2CC, YouTube, Spotify or your favourite podcast streaming service for ‘The Strategy Stacker – Luke Talks Money’.

                  Key topics covered include:
                  • In times of volatility, what do you need to remember?
                  • It’s probably affecting us more this time because of rising fuel prices, but the middle east has been in conflict before.
                  • Remember your investment portfolio and superannuation are long-term vehicles, both outlast a US President, a war and any one economic policy.
                  • Check your performance not only this month, but the past year and the longer-term.
                  • Remember price is a reflection of sentiment at a point in time.
                  • Dollar cost averaging is a great strategy you might consider.
                  • Plan and accept things are going to cost more this year into your budget.
                  • The RBA might also continue to increase interest rates if prices rise, in an effort to slow inflation.
                  • Keep in mind your asset allocation and risk profile, and if you don’t know your asset allocation take a look and see how growth orientated or defensive orientated it is. Balanced options in super funds are rarely balanced – they are more often than not skewed to growth.
                  • The danger of selling out and missing the recovery.
                  • Diversification still matters in 2026.
                  • Think strategically, is it time to buy? Look at individual investments if you need to.
                  • Luke believes that your time horizon should be linked to your life, not your retirement age – and he explains why.

Any changes to the superannuation rules will present opportunities for those who are switched on enough to take the time to understand them and use them wisely. Key topics covered include:
                    • We know under the current rules, there’s a concessional contribution cap on how much you can put into super and claim a tax deduction. It’s currently $30,000 a year which can be made up of your total employer contributions as well as your own.
                    • From 1 July it will increase from $30,000 to $32,500.
                    • What are the opportunities for you?
                    • Remember you can put money into super if you’re under 67 and use this!
                    • There’s also a change to the non-concessional contribution limit. This is money you put into super without claiming a tax deduction.
                    • When do you use this type of contribution?
                    • From 1 July 2026, the non-concessional contribution limit will increase from $120,000 to $130,000.
                    • Where are the opportunities for you?
                    • Remember the downsizing legislation is separate from the non-concessional contribution legislation.
                    • From a pension perspective, the Transfer Balance Cap is also increasing from 1 July 2026.
                    • Why your Total Super Balance Matters.
                    • Luke shares his top tips to think about the changes and your own situation – seek advice if you need help, it’s complicated.
