𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁: Dr. Gustavo Machado is a 2010 graduate of the Veterinary College at the Federal University of Santa Maria, Brazil. He completed a Master of Science in veterinary epidemiology at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil on Bovine Viral Diarrhea (BVD) epidemiology in 2013. He received his Ph.D. in 2016 while he worked with computer scientists on the development of machine learning tools applied to epidemiology. After graduating in 2016 he held a position as an assistant professor in the Department of Preventive Veterinary Medicine of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. Furthermore, he held a position as a postdoctoral associate in the Veterinary Population Medicine Department, at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Machado led his research on transboundary epidemiology in the Department of Population Health and Pathobiology. Nowadays, he holds a position as an assistant professor at NC State University in the College of Veterinary Medicine.

The National Pork Board is monitoring African swine fever, especially in prevention, and preparedness is still the priority.
