We’re looking back at the start of every previous ‘new era’ in ATCC/Supercars history on this week’s episode of the V8 Sleuth Podcast. Aaron Noonan and Will Dale run through every evolution of the championship’s technical rules, from Appendix J to Improved Production, Group C and Group A, the dawn of the Five Litre Touring Car era and its various iterations (Project Blueprint, Car of the Future/Gen2) that led us to Gen3. We also look at how the first race of each era played out, and it’s an interesting journey…

We wrap up our chat with longtime motorsport identity Chris Lambden on this week’s episode of the V8 Sleuth Podcast. In Part 2, Lambden talks about how Motorsport News came about, its rivalry with Auto Action and its legacy on the industry. He also talks about going racing in a historic Formula 5000 and how it led to the creation of the Formula Thunder 5000 concept. He also reveals how he nearly purchased the cars from a high-profile defunct series as its basis, and talks about the category’s long road to being born as S5000 – including the day he found out about Supercars’ rival concept and how it was resolved.

We’re talking to longtime motorsport identity Chris Lambden on this week’s episode of the V8 Sleuth Podcast. Perhaps best known now as the creator of S5000, an editor of Auto Action, the founding editor of Motorsport News and a touring car racer in his own right, Lambden has been around motorsport for over five decades. In the first part of our two-part chat, Lambden talks about his years racing karts in New Zealand and overseas, which brought him into the orbit of karting guru Terry Fullerton and his chief rival, a young Brazilian named Ayrton Senna da Silva. He also talks about his first publishing effort, his move to Australia and his time as editor of Auto Action. Lambden also chats about his move into touring car racing, getting a reference letter from Peter Brock for his driving, buying the 1987 Bathurst-winning Holden (and crashing it…) and how he nearly gave Craig Lowndes his first Bathurst 1000 start.
