Hour 1 (9.04) Wheel of Fortune fired the announcer it's had since 2011. Six people in a small hatchback on Angeles Crest, four of them dead, and Marie's swell reaching the beaches tonight. 

6:05 — Sony Pictures Television terminated Wheel of Fortune announcer Jim Thornton, days after suspending him, following what the studio called a thorough investigation. It stems from a complaint another passenger made about what she saw on his laptop during a May 14 American Airlines flight from Charlotte to LAX. Officers met the plane. Thornton was questioned briefly, was not arrested, and has not been charged. His attorney says he did nothing wrong and that he was in a support forum connected to suicide-prevention work he took up after losing a family member. Cro brings up Pete Townshend, arrested in 2003 in Britain's Operation Ore, who said he'd accessed a site as research tied to his own childhood — police cautioned him and put him on the sex offenders register for five years anyway. And the obvious question: is Conway the guy to take over the announcing job? 

6:20 — The swell from Marie reaches Southern California late tonight. Six to ten feet on south-facing beaches, strong rip currents through the holiday weekend, and the worst of it at the south-facing spots. 

6:35 — Zoox started running its driverless robotaxis to and from Harry Reid International in Las Vegas this week, the first fully driverless service at a US airport, with pickups at both terminals closer to baggage claim than the Uber and Lyft zones. Drivers waiting in the lot had mixed feelings — one full-timer said it'll take a lot of business; another said there's nothing they can do about it. Which leads to the real question: what can you make out there? Six days, twelve hours a day, seventy-five hours a week, a hundred and fifty bucks in gas, and about fifteen hundred at the end of it. 6:50 — Six people were in a black 2016 Hyundai Veloster heading east on the Angeles Crest Highway between Big Pines and Wrightwood around 1:34 this morning. The car drifted right, left the road, rolled down the embankment, and hit a power pole. Five of the six were thrown from the car. Four were pronounced dead at the scene. All six were from Wrightwood. CHP says nobody was belted in and that alcohol is likely a factor.

7:35 — Halloween Horror Nights opened at Universal Studios Hollywood, and this year's run is the longest they've ever done: 42 nights through November 1. Eight haunted houses, six scare zones, the Terror Tram hosted by Art the Clown, and the Purge stunt show. The headliner is Sinners, built out of the second half of Ryan Coogler's film — Club Juke, the vampires, the whole thing. It hit a sixty-minute wait within half an hour of the gates opening. Hellraiser makes its Hollywood debut, and Stranger Things, Killer Klowns and Ozzy Osbourne all have houses. The element of surprise is the whole game. 

7:50 — Back in June, during the federal and LAPD operation at MacArthur Park, District Attorney Nathan Hochman made a specific public pledge: Labor Day 2026, middle of the day, he'd be there with his family having a picnic. His office has confirmed he's hosting one this weekend. So — is it actually safe to take a family there? Plus, Saavedra fills in for Handel on Monday.

Hour 3 (9.04) Courts across California are warning people about a jury duty scam that now comes with a fake arrest warrant attached. Plus, two men pulled alive from a Nepal tunnel nine days after the floods. 

8:05 — USC hosts Fresno State tonight. Then the jury duty scam that's cleaning people out: a caller says you missed jury service and there's a warrant out, then texts or emails an official-looking arrest warrant with a dollar figure on it. They may claim to be a US Marshal or a local officer; they may have your name and address, and caller's ID can be spoofed to show a real courthouse number. The FTC put out an alert on it in June. Riverside Superior Court issued its own warning last month. The rule to remember courts never demand payment over the phone, and no government agency asks for a payment app, crypto, gift cards, or a wire. A real summon comes in the mail. Plus, do you track anyone on your phone — and is the phone listening? 

8:20 — Labor Day weekend travel and the state of the Inland Empire on a getaway Friday. The Rams and 49ers play the NFL's first-ever regular season game in Australia next Thursday at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, with the Rams as the designated home team. And Bellio hands off the six-inch platform heels to Nikki, on the grounds that she's married now. 

8:35 — What's the Conway gang doing this weekend? Plus, a new analysis of federal data puts the average California emergency room visit at three hours and twenty-seven minutes — tenth longest in the country. For someone in a mental health crisis it's five hours and fourteen minutes. About two percent of patients in California leave before anyone sees them, and Loma Linda University Medical Center has the longest typical visit in the state at over seven and a half hours. And Miley drops the Cyrus. 

8:50 — Rescuers in Nepal pulled two men alive out of a hydropower tunnel Friday, nine days after floods killed more than 1,200 people. Search teams heard voices that morning and dug them out of the Trishuli 3A site in Rasuwa district — a mechanical foreman and a mechanical supervisor, one in critical condition. One of them told rescuers there are more people living down there. Roughly 115 are believed to be trapped in that tunnel alone, and about 900 workers are missing across a dozen hydropower projects. Plus, the Chino man fined for growing food in his front yard — in a city whose motto is "Where Everything Grows." Conway is built for Cornhole.

7:20 — The Inglewood Transit Connector is a $287.5 million shuttle bus network linking the Metro K Line to SoFi Stadium and the Intuit Dome, targeted to open in April 2028 before the Olympics. To build the main hub, the city is taking a shopping center at Market and Florence through eminent domain — more than 20 businesses, some already handed 90-day notices, with $125 million budgeted for acquisition and relocation. Meanwhile Tiger Woods pleaded no contest to reckless driving after a March rollover on Jupiter Island and surrendered his license for five years, with the judge telling him he'd go back to jail if he drives at all. Same plea, wildly different numbers.

Hour 3 (9.03) Star Wars takes up 7% of George Lucas's new billion-dollar museum. Mark Sanchez agrees to plead guilty in the Indianapolis stabbing case, and Dolly Parton was laid to rest in a private family service. 

8:05 — Mark Sanchez and Marion County prosecutors filed a joint motion to cancel his September 8 jury trial and set a guilty plea and sentencing hearing instead. The charges stem from an October 2025 fight outside a downtown Indianapolis hotel over a parking spot, where Sanchez was stabbed in the chest and a 69-year-old truck driver was seriously injured. Sanchez faced a felony battery count plus misdemeanors including public intoxication. Fox let him go; Drew Brees took the booth. Also, Rob and Michele Reiner's son Jake married Maria Gilfillan in a small private ceremony in August, eight months after his parents were killed in their Brentwood home. 

8:20 — The $111 billion Paramount Skydance–Warner Bros. Discovery merger is frozen. Twelve state attorneys general led by California's Rob Bonta sued in July, the Writers Guild filed its own suit the next day, and a federal judge set trial for March 2, 2027. Paramount agreed to hold the deal until as late as June 1, 2027, and starts paying WBD shareholders $7 million a day at the end of September. Plus the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, the billion-dollar Exposition Park building George Lucas and Mellody Hobson put next to the Coliseum. Thirty-plus galleries across 100,000 square feet, Norman Rockwell and Jack Kirby and Frida Kahlo, and Star Wars occupying about seven percent of it. 8:35 — Dolly Parton died August 25 at 80 after a brief battle with cancer and was laid to rest three days later in a private service at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Nashville, buried beside Carl Dean, her husband of nearly 60 years. Jane Fonda, who recruited her for 9 to 5 and gave her her first movie role, got visibly emotional talking about her days after the funeral — including the lunch break where Parton drummed out "9 to 5" on her fingernails for Fonda and Lily Tomlin.
