Psychotherapist Shavaun Scott brings over three decades of clinical expertise in trauma, violence psychology, and forensic mental health to a complete three-part examination of the D4VD case with Tony Brueski.
The charges against David Anthony Burke in the death of 14-year-old Celeste Rivas Hernandez include first-degree murder with special circumstances, continuous sexual abuse of a child, lying in wait, financial motive, and mutilation of remains. Scott — author of The Minds of Mass Killers — examines the psychological landscape underneath every element.
Part 1: How does a 13-year-old become this vulnerable? The family dynamics, the resource gap, the platform failures, and the repeated runaway behavior that allegedly created the conditions for exploitation.
Part 2: The months of alleged silence. The psychology of compartmentalization. The behavior of Burke's inner circle — from loyalty to flight to forced testimony. What drives a family to fight against answering questions about their own child.
Part 3: The "young and dumb" defense versus what the charges actually describe. The psychological significance of art that mirrors the alleged violence. The alleged composure under public exposure. And the damage to millions of young fans trying to reconcile the artist they loved with the person prosecutors describe.
Three parts that go deeper than headlines — into the psychology that allegedly made this possible.

Lucia de Berk was a Dutch pediatric nurse convicted in 2003 of murdering patients. The evidence: she was present during unexplained deaths, statistical correlation suggested her presence wasn't coincidence, and medical experts interpreted clinical events as deliberate harm. She was sentenced to life in prison. In 2009, a court accepted the deaths were natural. She was completely innocent. She served six years for crimes that never happened.
The experts who helped overturn de Berk's conviction say the Lucy Letby case follows the same pattern. The same type of evidence. The same structural flaws. The same certainty built on the same kinds of assumptions.
Dr. Shoo Lee, the neonatologist whose own research was cited at Letby's trial, assembled a panel of fourteen international medical experts who reviewed every case. Their conclusion: no evidence of murder in any of the seventeen cases. The Royal Statistical Society criticized the prosecution's use of numbers. A police consultant statistician was told to stop her analysis. The handwritten notes prosecutors called a confession were reportedly written on a counselor's advice. And the door-swipe data was found to have been mislabeled.
The CPS declined additional charges in January 2026. Thirty-one expert reports were submitted to the CCRC in February 2026.
Part four of five. The parallel is real. The challenge is professional. And the conviction is being tested by the very kind of evidence that overturned the last case just like it.

David Burke grew up in a religious household. He was homeschooled. He listened exclusively to gospel music until age 13. Within a few years, he went from Fortnite montages in a closet to a world tour and millions of streaming fans. His biggest hit was called "Romantic Homicide." His debut album was called "Withered." And now he's charged with first-degree murder, sexual abuse of a child, and mutilation of remains.
In the final part of a three-part interview series, psychotherapist Shavaun Scott sits down with Tony Brueski to examine the psychological profile that emerges when you place the art next to the allegations. Is there a clinical framework for understanding when dark creative expression stops being catharsis and starts being revelation? What does Burke's alleged total composure — including reportedly not reacting when publicly connected to a missing child on Discord — tell a violence psychology expert about his internal wiring? Does the trajectory from extreme isolation to extreme fame with no transition contribute to the kind of person prosecutors describe?
Scott is the author of The Minds of Mass Killers and has spent over three decades working in forensic mental health, trauma recovery, and the psychology of criminal behavior. She tackles the "young and dumb" defense directly — and explains why the combination of sustained alleged exploitation, calculated alleged motive, and the alleged methodical aftermath tells a story that has nothing to do with youth or immaturity.
And she speaks to the young fans trying to reconcile who they thought Burke was with who prosecutors allege he is — because that psychological wound is real, and it matters.

You think you know the Duggars’ rules. The matching outfits. The courtship rituals. The no-kissing-before-marriage thing. But there’s a list behind the list — and it starts with Santa Claus. In the IBLP, Santa’s name was treated as an anagram of Satan. The Duggars erased him from Christmas entirely. And that was just the beginning of a blacklist that went far beyond holiday traditions.
Tony Brueski lays it all out. Cabbage Patch dolls, declared demonic — families were told to burn them, not throw them away. Disney, torched in a backyard bonfire. Rock music, even worship music with a beat, taught to give Satan a piece of your child’s soul. Harry Potter, Pokémon cards, Monster Energy drinks, Barbies — all gone. The Duggar daughters published the family’s “Nike” code word in their own book — yelled in public so every male in the family stared at his shoes when an attractive woman walked by.
Then the list moves past toys and into territory that matters. Therapy, called satanic. Psychiatrists, called evil. Mental health medication, called a trap. IBLP published materials linking illnesses to sins — migraines to guilt, osteoporosis to envy. Birth control forbidden even when pregnancy threatened a mother’s life. Former members described having tampons confiscated. Infants struck for crawling off a blanket in a practice the family called “encouragement.”
Tony connects the dots: every banned item removes one more window to the outside world. And the man who sealed those windows shut was himself accused of harassing 34 women who worked for him. The blacklist isn’t about faith. It’s about control. Robin Dreeke, Ret. FBI Behavioral Unit Chief, joins Tony for this episode.

In 2008, Texas authorities raided the FLDS Yearning for Zion Ranch and removed more than 460 children—the largest child custody action in U.S. history. The phone call that triggered the raid came from a woman in Colorado who had never been to the ranch. It was a complete fabrication. And it led investigators to evidence that was anything but fake.
Inside the compound: a temple with beds for underage ceremonies. A Bishop’s Record documenting child marriages. More than one in four of the teenage girls either married or pregnant. And audio recordings that captured Warren Jeffs’ voice during the assaults of two children—a twelve-year-old and a fifteen-year-old who later bore his child. The Texas jury deliberated less than thirty minutes before convicting Jeffs and sentencing him to life plus twenty years.
Part Four of the Hidden Killers FLDS series covers the raid, the backlash, and the trial—including the Utah conviction that was overturned on a technicality and why Texas made sure the same mistake wasn’t repeated. For the true crime community, this is the chapter where the system finally catches up to the man it ignored for decades.

Prosecutors allege David Anthony Burke performed on a world tour for months after Celeste Rivas Hernandez was allegedly killed — including the night her body was discovered in Los Angeles. His close friend Neo Langston fled to Montana rather than testify before a grand jury. His parents tried to quash their subpoenas. His manager testified over several days. And through all of it — months of public silence while a family grieved and a community demanded accountability.
In Part 2 of a three-part interview series, psychotherapist Shavaun Scott examines the psychology behind the alleged coverup and the wall of silence that surrounded this case for months. What psychological mechanisms allow someone to allegedly compartmentalize extreme violence and maintain a public persona? What does the behavior of those in Burke's orbit — the fleeing, the legal maneuvering, the eventual cooperation — reveal about what they were carrying? And when loyalty to a friend allegedly crosses the line into enabling the concealment of a child's death — what drives that choice?
Scott brings over 30 years of clinical experience in trauma, violence psychology, and forensic mental health to this conversation with Tony Brueski. She's the author of The Minds of Mass Killers and has sat across from both victims and perpetrators of violence throughout her career. She reads the behavior in this case the way only someone with her depth of experience can — and what she sees is chilling.

The charges against David Anthony Burke in the death of Celeste Rivas Hernandez are staggering — first-degree murder with special circumstances, continuous sexual abuse of a child, mutilation of remains. But the psychological questions underneath those charges start years before the alleged crime.
How does a 13-year-old end up living with a 19-year-old celebrity? How does an online connection on a Discord server allegedly evolve into cohabitation and exploitation? What does repeated runaway behavior actually mean — and what was Celeste running toward that made her so vulnerable to someone who allegedly knew exactly what to offer?
In this first part of a three-part interview series, psychotherapist Shavaun Scott brings more than three decades of clinical expertise to the table. She's worked in forensic settings, domestic violence shelters, and crisis teams. She's the author of The Minds of Mass Killers. And she sits down with Tony Brueski to dissect the conditions that allegedly allowed a child to disappear into a celebrity's orbit — while every system that should have intervened looked the other way.
This is about the before. The family dynamics. The platform accountability. The gap between a Lake Elsinore family and the Hollywood Hills. And the uncomfortable truth about why the "she fooled everyone" defense falls apart the moment you understand how exploitation actually works.

Amy Duggar King, Jim Bob Duggar's niece and author of the memoir Holy Disruptor, details the alleged generational abuse she says began with her grandfather, Jimmy Lee Duggar, and has continued through subsequent generations of the Duggar family.
According to Amy's published account, Jimmy Lee Duggar was physically violent and predatory. She alleges her mother Deanna was beaten so severely she nearly died, and that protective measures — including her grandmother locking bedroom doors from the inside at night — were standard practice in the household. Jim Bob Duggar, Amy says, grew up witnessing these conditions before establishing his own family structure within the Institute in Basic Life Principles.
Joseph Duggar, the seventh of Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar's nineteen children, was arrested on March 18 in Tontitown, Arkansas, on a warrant from Bay County, Florida. He is charged with lewd and lascivious behavior on a child under twelve, according to the arrest affidavit from the Bay County Sheriff's Office. The alleged victim, now fourteen, told investigators the abuse occurred during a family trip to Panama City Beach when she was nine. Joseph reportedly admitted to the conduct when confronted by the victim's father and again during a police-monitored phone call.
Kendra Duggar, Joseph's wife, was arrested two days later and charged with four counts of endangering the welfare of a minor and four counts of second-degree false imprisonment after investigators reportedly found locks on the outside of their children's bedroom doors during a home study.
Amy sits down with retired FBI Behavioral Analysis Program Chief Robin Dreeke to examine the behavioral patterns she says have defined the Duggar family across three generations — control, suppression, and institutional silence.

Criminal defense attorney Bob Motta joins Tony Brueski and Robin Dreeke to provide detailed legal analysis of two significant active prosecutions: the first-degree murder case with special circumstances against David Anthony Burke (D4VD) in the death of 14-year-old Celeste Rivas Hernandez, and the multi-jurisdiction charges against Joseph and Kendra Duggar.
In the Burke matter: Motta examines the three special circumstances—lying in wait, financial gain, and killing a witness—the prosecution’s theory connecting the sexual abuse charges to the murder motive, the defense’s stated position and its potential legal basis, the independent evidentiary challenge of the mutilation charge, and the strategic implications of a pending death penalty determination.
In the Duggar matter: Motta addresses the Florida life felony charge and the defendant’s alleged recorded admissions, the simultaneous Arkansas prosecution for child endangerment and false imprisonment, independent legal representation retained by the co-defendant, restricted access to court records in the Arkansas proceeding, and the potential admissibility and jury impact of publicly disclosed family communications.
Comprehensive legal analysis of both active cases including charging strategy, evidentiary assessment, defense constraints, and anticipated developments.

I AM EVIL I DID THIS. Those words, written on a green Post-It note in Lucy Letby's handwriting, were the first piece of evidence shown to jurors. The prosecution called them a confession. The defense called them the scrawl of a woman in psychological collapse. The jury looked at those words for ten months. The debate over what they mean has lasted years.
Lucy Letby's trial at Manchester Crown Court was built entirely on circumstantial evidence. A staffing chart placing her at every incident. Medical expert testimony interpreting clinical events as deliberate harm. Confidential hospital documents found at her home. And the handwritten notes, which also contained phrases like I haven't done anything wrong, repeated pleas for help, and references to her family and pets.
Reporting after the trial revealed the notes were allegedly written on a counselor's advice as a therapeutic exercise during a period when Letby had been removed from clinical duties and was under internal investigation. That context was reportedly not presented to the jury.
The defense did not call its own medical expert. The jury convicted on most counts but deadlocked on six. Letby received fourteen whole-life orders, increased to fifteen after a 2024 retrial.
Part three of five. The trial evidence in full. The decisions that shaped the verdict. And the question of whether the jury was given everything it needed to decide.
