Most people battling addiction never get a second chance. Nick Reiner got eighteen of them. Eighteen trips to rehab facilities reportedly costing $60,000 a month. Private yoga instructors. Family therapists. A guesthouse on a $13.5 million Brentwood estate where he could land softly every time he fell. Rob and Michele Reiner never stopped showing up for their son. On December 14, 2025, they were found stabbed to death in their home. Nick was arrested that night and now faces two counts of first-degree murder. But this story isn't just about entitlement, enabling, and what happens when love without boundaries meets zero accountability. It's about a $42 billion addiction treatment industry designed to fail. The 28-day program isn't based on neuroscience—it's based on what insurance agreed to pay in the 1970s. The brain doesn't heal in 28 days. But the invoice does.
Sixty percent of patients relapse within 30 days of discharge. Luxury rehabs have no obligation to track—let alone report—whether their patients actually get better. Patients learn to game the system. Facilities profit whether they live or die. We trace Nick's trajectory from childhood tantrums that derailed family yoga sessions to violent outbursts in rehab at fifteen, from destroying his parents' guesthouse on meth to a 2020 mental health conservatorship, from allegedly terrorizing guests at Conan O'Brien's Christmas party to the murders less than 24 hours later. A rehab roommate said he "knew exactly who it was" when he heard the news. A yoga instructor wrote a children's book about his behavior. Nick made disturbing admissions on the Dopey podcast about violence, theft, and moral bankruptcy. The Reiners aren't unique. They're a pattern. Parents bankrupted by hope. Kids cycling through treatment. And an industry that takes the money regardless of outcome.

Idaho has become America's true crime epicenter—and the state's lawmakers are finally waking up to a disturbing reality. A judge in Bryan Kohberger's case confirmed in November 2025 that under current law, Kohberger could potentially profit from book deals, streaming rights, and paid interviews within just five years of conviction. The judge stated the statute "leaves open the potential for Defendant to receive money from media contracts in the future." For the families of Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin, that's a nightmare scenario they never should have had to contemplate. This week, State Senator Tammy Nichols introduced legislation to modernize Idaho's nearly 50-year-old Son of Sam law—a statute that hasn't been updated since 1978, when David Berkowitz terrorized New York City and publishers lined up to pay him for his story. The Supreme Court gutted most of these laws in 1991. Idaho never fixed theirs. The new bill addresses digital monetization, streaming platforms, podcasts, and ongoing royalties—none of which existed when the original law was written. It unanimously advanced out of committee for a public hearing. But Kohberger isn't the only case exposing the problem. Lori Vallow Daybell owes over $700,000 in restitution to the families of JJ Vallow and Tylee Ryan—money she'll never pay. Chad Daybell's self-published doomsday novels may still be generating income somewhere. In this episode, we break down the full history of Son of Sam laws, why the Supreme Court struck them down, how Idaho's current statute fails victims, and what the new legislation actually does. Idaho became a true crime epicenter by accident. What they do next is a choice.

LAPD Robbery-Homicide arrested Neo Langston—D4VD's close friend known online as NeoTheAsian—at his mother's home in Montana for failure to appear before the grand jury investigating the death of 15-year-old Celeste Rivas Hernandez. He's now in an LA jail on $60,000 bail. He's not the first witness prosecutors have had to chase down. A female witness went into hiding in December and faced a body attachment order. Manager Robert Morgenroth admitted under oath his priority was keeping D4VD's tour going, not calling police. The grand jury continues hearing witnesses through February 2026, and sources say prosecutor Beth Silverman is building toward murder charges. But what does the physical evidence actually reveal? A chainsaw still in its protective sheath. A burn cage incinerator capable of 1,600 degrees—boxed, unopened. Both discovered inside the Hollywood Hills home where D4VD was living when Celeste's dismembered body was found in his Tesla last September. Private investigator Steve Fischer's assessment: "Whatever happened here, this wasn't a finalized plan. She was not meant to be left in that Tesla. The plan got upended." Former FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer analyzes what unused disposal tools suggest about intent versus execution, how advanced decomposition affects forensic analysis, and how circumstantial cases succeed or fail. Investigators have identified a second suspect who may have been involved "before, during, and after" Celeste's death. Digital evidence allegedly shows two people may have been present during a late-night trip to Santa Barbara County. The timeline matters: Celeste was last confirmed alive January 2nd, 2025. The Tesla was parked July 29th—the day D4VD left for tour. Her body was found September 8th, the day after what would have been her 15th birthday. D4VD has not been charged. He remains legally presumed innocent.

For eleven days after Monique Tepe and her husband Dr. Spencer Tepe were found shot to death in their Columbus home, the man charged with their murders was still working as a vascular surgeon in Illinois. Michael McKee, 39, pleaded not guilty on January 23rd to four counts of aggravated murder. Prosecutors say ballistic evidence links a firearm from McKee's Rockford property to shell casings recovered at the crime scene. Surveillance footage allegedly captured his vehicle arriving just before the December 30th killings and leaving shortly after. Columbus Police Chief Elaine Bryant called it a "targeted" and "domestic violence related attack." The couple's two young children, ages four and one, were found unharmed inside the home. McKee and Monique divorced in 2017 after less than two years of marriage. She and Spencer were approaching their fifth wedding anniversary. But the murder charges aren't the only story here. McKee's Nevada medical license had expired in June 2025. Court records show he was added to a malpractice lawsuit just months before the killings. He allegedly provided fake addresses on official documents. Yet he was credentialed to perform surgery at OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford. How does this happen? We expose the National Practitioner Data Bank—a database Congress created to catch problem doctors that the public can't access and many state medical boards don't check. Over 500 doctors disciplined in one state are practicing elsewhere with clean records. More than 250 who surrendered licenses are operating in new states with no consequences. They call it "passing the trash" in education. In medicine, there's no equivalent reform. No federal accountability. Just a system protecting physician mobility over patient safety. McKee faces life without parole. But how many doctors like him are out there right now?

Harvey Levin at TMZ says sources describe the crime scene where Rob and Michele Reiner were found stabbed to death as "incredibly brutal"—disturbing even to seasoned medical examiner staff. He said publicly it had "all the markings of a meth murder." Their son Nick was arrested near Exposition Park, an area known for drug activity. His documented history includes violent outbursts while "spun out on uppers," cocaine binges described on the Dopey podcast, heroin addiction, and destroying his parents' guest house while high on stimulants. He estimated eighteen rehab stints by his teenage years. The family says his medication was working—then doctors changed his prescription a month before the killings. Was he using again? We dig into the forensic research on overkill violence and what the clinical literature says about schizoaffective disorder combined with stimulant use. But this episode also examines how a family of accomplished, intelligent people stopped being able to see the danger in front of them. Former FBI Special Agent Robin Dreeke—who spent 21 years with the Bureau including serving as Chief of the FBI's Counterintelligence Behavioral Analysis Program—analyzes the family dynamics at play. How does a family go from calling the police in 2019 to sleeping in the same house on December 13th, 2025? The Reiners had tried tough love. It hadn't worked. They blamed themselves. Nick co-wrote "Being Charlie" with his father—giving him extraordinary narrative control over how the family understood their own story. Dreeke explains how trust gets exploited and why manufactured guilt is such an effective manipulation tool.

How do prosecutors prove premeditation when there are no eyewitnesses? When there's an eight-year gap between a divorce and a double homicide? When the defendant is a board-certified vascular surgeon with no criminal history who doesn't look like a killer? Michael McKee allegedly drove 300 miles from Chicago to Columbus to execute his ex-wife Monique Tepe and her husband Dr. Spencer Tepe while their young children slept nearby. The evidence police have described is substantial—ballistic matches linking a firearm from McKee's property to shell casings at the scene, vehicle surveillance, a confirmed ID in alley footage, and a firearm suppressor that prosecutors will argue proves this was planned. Former felony prosecutor Eric Faddis spent years in the Special Victims Unit handling first-degree murder cases and has tried 45+ jury trials. He breaks down why charges were upgraded from murder to aggravated murder, how prosecutors establish motive across a timeline spanning nearly a decade, and what the state needs the jury to believe about Dr. Michael McKee. We also examine McKee's behavioral patterns through the Dark Triad framework—narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy. A man who allegedly evaded a malpractice lawsuit nine times, fled his marriage after seven months, and may have spent years fixating on the woman who moved on without him. Every possible defense strategy runs into the wall of premeditation evidence. And the same ego that allegedly drove him to murder may prevent him from ever accepting a plea deal that could spare him from life without parole.

Breaking details in the Nick Reiner case. A man who shared a room with Nick in a luxury Malibu rehab at age 15 is now speaking out — and his account could shatter the expected insanity defense.
Danny Spilar told the Daily Mail that the moment he saw the news about Rob and Michele Reiner's murders, he knew exactly who did it. Not suspected. Knew. Because he'd heard Nick rant about hating his parents night after night in that rehab facility nearly two decades ago.
This wasn't after years of hard drug abuse. Nick was only using marijuana at the time. But according to Danny, the hatred was already there — raw, constant, and aimed directly at his parents.
Danny also witnessed violence. Nick allegedly attacked another teen at the facility. Got physical with Danny himself over a comment about looking like John Travolta's son. A tech had to intervene.
And here's what makes this critical for the trial: Danny says Rob and Michele were different from other wealthy parents. They showed up personally for every session, every group, every parents weekend. They weren't absent. They were desperately present. And Nick hated them anyway.
Now prosecutors will have to answer this question: Can you claim insanity when a witness heard you express this hatred 17 years before the crime — before the heroin, before the schizophrenia diagnosis, before any of the excuses?

Ruby Franke's twelve-year-old son escaped through a window with duct tape on his wrists. Elleshia Seymour's eight-year-old told a stranger in Croatia to Google his name. Two Utah kids. Two different families. Both figured out how to rescue themselves.
Their fathers? Kevin Franke hadn't seen his children in over a year. He told police his only job was paying bills. Kendall Seymour was in Utah while his kids sat in a Croatian orphanage after his ex-wife allegedly fled the country on TikTok doomsday prophecies.
Both women were raised LDS. Both became apocalyptic extremists. Both fathers claim total shock.
This is the pattern nobody wants to examine: When doomsday preparation is normal, when personal revelation from God is expected, when the end times are always near—how do you recognize when faith turns dangerous? The children saw it clearly enough to escape. The fathers are still explaining why they didn't know.

Former prosecutor turned defense attorney Eric Faddis delivers dual-perspective analysis on two murder cases making national headlines: Michael McKee in Ohio and Kouri Richins in Utah.
The McKee case looks strong on paper. Surveillance footage allegedly places him at Monique and Spencer Tepe's property weeks before the murders. Witnesses describe death threats going back years. Stolen license plates. A phone that went dark. Vehicle tracking data. Eric breaks down which evidence is most damaging from a prosecution standpoint—then switches sides to reveal the defense's playbook: motions to exclude prior abuse allegations, hearsay fights over statements from the deceased victim, and strategies to create reasonable doubt.
The Richins case is in crisis. Trial starts February 23rd, but the defense just alleged witness intimidation—claiming investigators threatened arrest and immunity revocation to force cooperation. Key fentanyl sourcing witness Robert Crozier has recanted, now saying he sold OxyContin, not the fentanyl that killed Eric Richins. Judge Mrazik has limited the FBI profiler, excluded domestic violence evidence, and only partially admitted the "Walk the Dog" letter.
No fentanyl was ever recovered. No pills. No forensic link. Five times the lethal dose in the victim's system—but a supply chain theory that just collapsed.
Eric Faddis knows what prosecutors are building toward and what defense attorneys are planning to tear apart. This is the complete breakdown of both cases from someone who's worked both sides.

New testimony in the Paul Caneiro murder trial has revealed what may be the most haunting detail yet in this seven-year-old case. Detective Joseph Cordoma testified that blood stain patterns inside Keith Caneiro's Colts Neck kitchen indicate eleven-year-old Jesse Caneiro was a "mobile blood source" - moving around the kitchen island, leaving blood on surfaces, tracking toward the foyer and the front door. Jesse's body was found at the base of that island. Jennifer Caneiro's family left the courtroom before the detective explained his conclusions.
Cordoma also testified the mansion fire was intentionally set in a basement storage closet around 3 a.m., with the Verizon line cut to prevent the alarm from transmitting. The fire burned slow for hours by design. Meanwhile, prosecutors presented testimony that Keith's computer server went offline at 3:18 a.m. - and that Paul later texted an employee claiming Keith had messaged him about the power being out. If the prosecution's timeline holds, Keith was already dead.
The defense continues to raise questions about Corey Caneiro, the third brother who was never investigated and whose DNA was never collected. Paul Caneiro maintains his innocence. The trial continues.
