With the All-Star Break upon us, Rob Wolff travels back to take a look at the Mets tenure—and unlikely All-Star selection—of outfielder/super-utility player Joel Youngblood.

Youngblood arrived in New York on an infamous day in Mets’ history—June 15, 1977—in a smaller trade on the day the Midnight Massacre saw Tom Seaver depart Flushing. Pegged as a utility player, Youngblood became a solid contributor for the Mets—primarily as an outfielder—as he struggled to shed his image as a supersub.

Youngblood was the Mets’ lone All-Star representative in 1981 before making baseball history on August 4, 1982 thanks to the unique timing of his trade from the Mets to the Montreal Expos.
