D.J. Dozier was a three sport star in high school, excelling in baseball as well as football and basketball. While he was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 18th round out of high school, his future seemed to lie in football, as Dozier accepted a scholarship to—and starred at running back for—Penn State.

Dozier won a National Championship in college and was a first round draft pick in the NFL for the Minnesota Vikings, But he never quite abandoned his interest in baseball. He would sign a free agent contract with the Mets and work his way up through the minors in 1990-91—while continuing his football career over the winter. In 1992, Dozier would make it to the majors with the Mets for 47 at bats, making him one of the rare athletes to play in two professional sport leagues.
