Very That episodes

  • Spooky-Ooky Soul Sunday
It's here, the season finale of Very That Season 2! We're taking it back to the backwoods with a couple of lazyboys and making Oprah proud with our very own version of Super Soul Sunday... but making it spooky ooky booky dooky kooky looky wooky! So pull up a chair and let's get sickening and absolutely disgusting as we examine some of Oprah's favorite SSS questions, but f*ck the pretense and get real because while we may not have all the answers, we certainly have our truths. Together we examine the purpose of human existence. Grey questions why we all feel the need for a higher purpose, with Arnold acknowledging the power in just being but asks where the hell are the directions? Next, the duo asks, "What do you know for sure?" - and while we can all agree not much, your hosts examine the truths they hold dear to lives, no matter how painfully honest or delusional. Nina Bonita Brown could never serve it as hard as Shea! Lastly, the duo examines how they see their higher selves and get familiar with the feelings and truths around that identity; enter Doris! Grey explains how she's grasping for more grace, and Arnold divulges how she is more hungry for more comfort in his own company. Together they're both just trying to get their hands and mouth around that higher self!. As always, the two keep the answers light and gross, just like how Alanis likes it! As always, thank you all for another great season, and we look forward to season 3, where we get grosser, deeper, spookier, and laugh so hard we cry...or just cry!

  • LISTENNNNNN to the wound of Abandonment!

    CATEGORY IS: ABANDONMENT

Remember the scene in Dreamgirls where Effie is pleading with Curtis to stay? Queue "And I am Telling You I'm Not Going" So move over, Alanis, because, in this episode, we get familiar with everyone's favorite Dreamgirl: Abandonment. As one of the deepest wounds, Abandonment can have so much power in the way we see ourselves and the world around us while dictating our every move. Arnold walks through how he discovered his abandonment wounds were causing his behavior to repel those closest to him, thus only deepening the wound. Grey explains how his fear of rejection and Abandonment forced him to overcompensate by being an anxious people pleaser. Together they conclude that rejection is a necessary part of the karmic wheel – providing us a moment that reminds us to center back to ourselves and see how WE aren't serving ourselves. So forget Mr. Taylor and look in that mirror and channel Miss Effie as you shout, "I'm staying, I'm staying, And you, and you, and you, You're gonna love MEEEEE!!!!!"

  • Mirror Mirror on the wall: Who Dat?

CATEGORY IS: REPRESENTATION   R-E-P-R-E-S-E-N-T! Find out what it means to me…well, what it means to us! In this episode, Arnold & Grey explore the role and impact of representation in the world, or the lack thereof,  in their lives. The ability to see oneself reflected in the world around them can be validating and inspiring – but what happens when that's not the case? Grey discusses how glimpses of representation can often come through as saturated stereotypes – that don't always feel applicable and have made him question his own identity and relationship with said stereotype. Arnold explains how lack of visibility into alternative stories drives his yearning for more, but also helped him recognize those in power writing these stories are creating a funhouse mirror to reflect how others expect us to be rather than who we are in reality. Knowing that the mirror is warped & creating dissent – but also helps to recognize which parts of your identity need validation. For instance: MENTAL HEALTH! Queue the Alanis Morissette! Together, your hosts realize that representation can be galvanizing and provide power, and sometimes it's up to you to pick up that charge. So if you don't see it now, perhaps it's an opportunity for you to become that representation & be that mirror for someone else. In the end, we all belong and deserve to be wherever we want, so TAKE UP SPACE AND REPRESENT HEAUX!!!

  • Let’s Get Loud About Silence!
Do you hear that? Neither do we! That's because in this episode, Grey & Arnold are talking about silence – and they won't shut up about their opinions about it! Silence is just the absence of sound – which is funny since it can hold so much presence…almost deafening! Throughout the episode, they observe the power silence can have over us, causing panic or a gateway to fantasy. Grey discusses how his upbringing has made silence and formidable adversary – as its presence can bring up past traumas. On the other hand, Arnold explains how silence provides a comfortable and safe space for him – where he can explore the recesses of his mind. Both observe that their response to silence presents in their ability to connect to the world. However, together they find that it is not silence that is the issue, but rather their response to its presence. In the end – silence is neutral, and it's our association and relationship with the silence that drive our reaction. So when it comes to silence, tell your mind to just SHUTUP and let her LIVE!

  • Trust yo'self before you wreck yo'elf

CATEGORY IS: TRUST YO SELF  Did you leave your stove on? No? Are you sure? Girl, you better double-check! In this episode, Arnold and Grey explore how they second guess themselves & self-trust can be such a trial. If Alanis is Anxiety, and Mariah is happiness, then Trust has to be Michelle from Destiny's Child. You know you CAN trust her to show up – but that fall on 106 & Park makes you second-guess her ability to get it together.  Arnold discusses how growing up in a family where issues were never addressed makes him LOSE HIS BREATH when trying to trust his emotions. Grey goes into how constantly being reminded of his mistakes by his family now makes him second guess his own decisions and act like a BUG-A-BOO with himself. Together, the two realize that sometimes you become your own SOLDIER and not be afraid to stand up for yourself. Sometimes, you have gotta SAY YES and show yourself some compassion and Trust that you got this girl BECAUSE YOU DO! So let yourself flotsam and jetsam about – because sometimes that's needed to create the world you want because a bit of destruction is necessary when you're trying to CATER 2 U!

In this episode, Arnold & Grey explore their complex relationship with happiness & why it's so hard to fully commit to it. So if anxiety is Alanis Morissette, then joy has to be Mariah Carey – you love her when she comes on, but by the 5th time you've heard "All I Want for Christmas is You" you want to scream! Arnold discusses how his relationship with happiness can feel co-dependent, to the point where he can feel a little Obsessed with her, but comes to realization that she is a part of him indefinitely. Grey explores how Mariah is a state of being rather than a feeling – where even when things are shit, one can find contentment with the current experience with just a bit of perspective. Together the two discover that while Mariah is the Moment (now c'mon now)– it's necessary to put this Spotify playlist of life on shuffle because that's what it truly means to be alive! Sometimes that One Sweet Day can turn into a Heartbreaker – AND THAT'S THE REAL FANTASY OF LIFE! However, when Mariah comes, then you need to hit them runs, girl! Grey talks about how he's a lover whose ready to fight, highlighting the internal conflict that arises as he tries to weigh out his options on whether or not to engage with conflict. Arnold admits that while conflict provides a thrill, self-preservation holds him back from letting these bitches have...because she's got the receipts! • GOSSIP girls xoxo
CATEGORY IS: Gossip GIrls XoXo Join your favorite Aunties as they dive into the juicy world of gossip – exploring where it comes from, what it provides, and why it's so damn funny! Whether it's Kiki'ng with the gals or throwing shade to the bitch that wronged you, gossip is something we all do whether we like it or not. Of course, this exploration isn't without its tangents – have you heard of colonialism? While many view gossip as something done in secret in a sinister matter – that doesn't mean it's not without its merits. Arnold divulges how tsismis is a family affair and can be a form of self-soothing by numbing the effect of the garbage in your life by focusing on someone else's. Grey dives deep into the juice to describe how gossip can be cathartic and therapeutic by granting validation of our own perceptions. Together the two discover that while it can have its more sinister intentions, gossip itself is not inherently wrong and can provide a point of connection with others through vulnerable conversations…cue the Brene Brown reference.
