Dean Yates is a journalist, about-to-be-published author, mental health consultant and a former patient of Ward 17, a Melbourne psych unit that treats veterans and first responders. Now residing in Tasmania, his book is set to release in 2023 and tell the tale of his experience with PTSD and moral injury as a result of his longstanding work as a foreign correspondent. Over the years Dean covered the 2002 Bali bombings and the Boxing Day tsunami of 2004, but it was 12 July 2007 that changed his life irrevocably – while violently taking the lives of two of his colleagues in Iraq. A circumstance which Dean personally (yet wrongly) felt he bared the responsibility for. 

Six years Dean has spent penning his story together with the resources he believes can and will make a difference for those who have, continue to and will in the future, walk in his shoes in the name of their career as first responders, military, conflict journalists and law enforcement alike.
