FROM YOUTUBE TO INDIE FILMMAKER…SHELBY OAKS IS HERE, BUT DOES IT HERALD A POTENTIAL NEW FILMIC VOICE OR WERE MISTAKES MADE?!?!?!

Stop me if you’ve heard this one:  An ex-Jehovah’s Witness, pansexual, YouTube movie reviewer/influencer decides to make a movie…. And so it is with Shelby Oaks, the debut feature of one Chris Stuckmann. Kickstarter’d, delayed, reshot, remixed, edited, EP’d and shepherded to the screen by rising superstar horror director Mike Flanagan and a host of other contemporary horror creators, is Shelby Oaks THE horror debut from a YouTube content creator worthy of all those hyperbolic quotes on the poster? (Editor’s Note: The Phillipous and Talk to Me just said, “HOLD MY BEER”.) Or does this have “rookie filmmaker missteps” ALL over it? Team Web (Cupcake) and Team Sundance (WillDaBeast) have thoughts…lots of them…and you may be surprised who is the MOST critical. (Editor’s Note: Cupcake always takes a shit on one major thing every movie.)

DISCOVER THE SECRET OF SHELBY OAKS WITH WATCH SKIP PLUS!

SCREEN THAT CALL FROM BEYOND…THE GRABBER IS BACK IN BLACK PHONE 2!

Blumhouse pictures looks to break its poo-poo streak (Exorcist:Believer, The Wolf Man, M3G4N 2.0, The Woman in the Yard, Drop) with Black Phone 2, the sequel to the wildly successful first film. Based on a short story by Stephen King’s son Joe Hill, the sequel is directed by genre friendly director-writer Scott Derrickson who also helmed the Sinister films and Doctor Strange. Starring returning actors Mason Thames (who is on a hot streak as the current IT actor), Madeleine McGraw, Miguel Mora, and Ethan Hawke, is this sequel a worthy expansion of the Grabber storyline/universe or is it just silly “bigger, bolder, better but more of the same”?

ACCEPT THE CALL AND MASK UP FOR THE NEW WATCH SKIP PLUS!!!!

October is still “Spooky Season”, and Mike has capsule reviews of horror films - John Carpenter’s Prince of Darkness, VHS Halloween, I See You, and spotlights director Brandon Christensen whose Shudder exclusives have become WillDaBeast must see’s. Cupcake talks the little seen Marrowbone with its incredible and devastating twist ending and the skipped YA thriller that deserves your watch - Down a Dark Hall.

IS THE THIRD TIME THE CHARM FOR A BELOVED FRANCHISE WHOSE FIRST FILM BOMBED AND WHOSE SEQUEL WAS ONLY A MODERATE BOX OFFICE SUCCESS?!??

Fun Fact: the original 1982 Tron is one of Cupcake’s favorite nostalgic cornerstone films. This week he forces WillDaBeast to watch the third film in the franchise: Tron: Ares. Directed by one of the co-directors of the last Pirates of the Caribbean movie and starring up and coming performers Greta Lee, Jodie Turner-Smith and Evan Peters, veteran actors Jeff Bridges and Gillian Anderson, and starring the nearly-cancelled, gorgeous but maybe difficult to work worth and satisfy, questionable celebrity Jared Leto, Tron: Ares dazzles with sizzling CGI effects and a banging Nine Inch Nails score. For a franchise that has only offered three films in FORTY THREE YEARS (!), will this sequel revive the “was it ever there” franchise or is it time for Tron to hit the “Recycle Bin” for good?

RECTIFY THE NEW WATCH SKIP PLUS OR FACE THE GAME GRID!!!!

October is “Spooky Season”, and Mike has capsule reviews of horror films: some retro-screenings and a few new streamers. Cupcake talks the ridiculous Chris Pratt trailer for his new film that hits in 2026 and then warns viewers about the “profoundly disturbing” Spanish horror film “The Coffee Table”

SEX AND VIOLENCE COLLIDE IN “BONE LAKE”...BUT DOES IT NAIL ITS MONEY SHOT?!??

Cheeky sexy marketing campaign? Check. Trailer that makes it look like a sexed-up “You’re Next”? Check. Gorgeous, drool-worthy leads? Check. Excellent script and execution…..

Uhhhhhhhhhhh WilDaBeast and Cupcake welcome back Tyler from Raiders of the Podcast to give you the skinny (or rather….the girth, maybe?) on the erotic thriller “Bone Lake”. Directed by a woman who also shot a short entitled “Come F*ck My Robot” and written by a screenwriter with only two little seen films as credits, the charged up posters and marketing hint at a bloody sex fest with ex’s and axes. Starring Maddie Hasson, Marco Piggosi, Alex Roe, and Andra Nechitta, this thriller has two couples showing up at the same AirBnB where a weekend turns into psychosexual gamesmanship replete with sexing, stabbing, and sawing. But can does it deliver the goods?

GET IT UP FOR THE NEW WATCH SKIP PLUS!!!!

For Plusses, Tyler talks the 2005 thriller Derailed, speaking of “psychosexual gamesmanship” while Mike plusses all the fun horror films he’s been consuming since “Spooky Season” started October 1 including the in-theatres Regal 31 Screams On Screen.

PEELE PRODUCER LABEL NOSEDIVES WITH HIM - STULTIFYING MISFIRE!

Jordan Peele, the innovative and stunning director of Get Out and Nope, lends his (producer) name to HIM, a new horror film about a young football quarterback facing an aging rival for the top spot on a pro team. Directed by Justin Tipping and starring Marlon Wayans and Tyriq Withers,  the trailers sold this as a seemingly brutal, gory “The Substance meets the NFL”. Sadly, the Boyz, from the opening moments of the episode  just can’t hide their…..

….utter disdain for this film. Period. How could such promise be squandered in spectacular fashion?

GO LONG FOR A HAIL MARY PASS WITH THE NEW WATCH SKIP PLUS EPISODE!

HEAVY STEPHEN KING NOVEL HITS THE SCREEN…BUT DOES IT HAVE LEGS?

A 1979 Stephen King novel got a big screen adaptation, and Watch Skip Plus gives you its singular critique and analysis in a brand new episode. WillDaBeast and Cupcake take on the Francis Lawrence directed - JT Mollner written book to screen thriller with a simple premise: Young men compete in a “long walk” where the last man standing wins a wish and untold millions. The catch? Keep walking or die. Starring a crop of mega-talented new faces such as Cooper Hoffman, David Jonsson, and Charlie Plummer and supported by veteran actors like Skywalker himself Mark Hammil and Judy Greer, will audiences take to this polarizing, feel-bad allegory about the power of the human spirit and its all too instinctual trappings or will the week’s events leading up to the film’s release (an assasination and a school shooting in ONE day; King himself nearly getting cancelled over a tweet) take out the film’s kneecaps at the box office?

PINCH ONE OFF AND WALK ON UP TO WATCH SKIP PLUS!

For Plusses, the Boyz each review new streaming films to enjoy in the sanctity of your homes: Mike caught “Friendship” starring Tim Robinson and Paul Rudd while Cupcake threw $10 at a VOD indie rental: “She Rides Shotgun” starring Taron Edgerton and featuring a powerhouse performance from young Ana Sophia Heger.

Episode 138: The Conjuring: Last Rites

THE POWER OF  A NEW WATCH SKIP PLUS EP COMPELS YOU!

Cupcake experienced some major tech difficulties as he “Resolve”-d to master a new editing software, but the WS+ boyz are back! This time taking on the fourth Conjuring film, itself the 9th movie in the “Conjuring” universe (the “CU”). Directed by CU mainstay director Michael Chaves with returning leads Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, pic fashions the famed demonologists (or hoax-artists?) Ed and Lorraine Warren as spiritual warrior-superheroes as they wage war on a demon that has a link to both the Warrens and a Pittsburgh family. With diminishing returns in the franchise, is this new Conjuring a return to form of the fun-house thrills of Conjuring 1 and 2 or does this series of films need to head towards the light and live on in our memories?

GET IN THE SPIRIT WITH WS+!

For Pluses, Mike regales us of his family’s VEGAS VACATION! Discover the places and shows he visited with helpful tips for discounted shenanigans. Meanwhile: Jose does the double plus: listen to him rave about YET ANOTHER set of Shokz open ear bone conduction headphones AND the purportedly 30 year-lasting, sustainable, hemp-bamboo t-shirt from Undrdog.
