Welcome to the MormonNewsRoundup where Dives ruminates on the great and spacious Beehive!

Welcome brothers and sisters to Mormon Movie Reviews: Where LDS movie lovers belong! I am your humble host, Dives, and I’m here with Mormonish podcasting legend, Rebecca Biblioteca,

today is April 23, 2023, this is episode where we will review

EP: How Near to the Angels REVIEW (1956)
Link: https://youtu.be/4DJklc6CYbI
Running time: 41 minutes
Rating: not rated
Genre: Religious Drama

This review works best if you have seen this film before, though that is not required.
Spoiler alert
We will watch this short together while we make insightful and occasionally irreverent commentary.

Synopsis

Janet is a latter-day saint who wants a temple marriage, but her steady boyfriend, Kent, is inactive. But while Janet attends a church fireside, a young Mormon man named Tim introduces himself and proposes suddenly. Tim’s mission president told him to get married within six months of coming home.

Now Janet faces a tough choice.

Yes this is an official Church video brought to us by the Young Women’s Mutual Improvement Association which was founded by Brigham Young under a different name way back in 1869.

We are a bit lucky to have this film in color because some other church films in this era like ‘And Should We Die’ were shot in black and white.

And this film was produced by Judge Whitaker, the most prolific LDS filmmaker of all time.

What is the film's overall message?
One small step off the straight and narrow like skipping mutual or listening to jazz, can lead to heartache and jeopardize your life plan
Hanging out with the wrong friends is nothing but trouble
Marriage in the temple is the single most important life event for a young woman
No man can compare to a returned missionary who bears a strong testimony
Even if a less active Mormon says he will start paying tithing, go to church, and is willing to marry a young woman in the temple, he is not to be trusted
A young woman’s personal feelings about her marital suitor are of lesser importance than her lover’s Mormon bona fides
Mormon utopia is achieved by going to mutual, attending firesides, playing in the church sports league, getting married in the temple, and of course women bearing tons of kids,
bottom line: one’s entire life should be built around the church

Let's face it. Money can be a blessing or a stumbling block. Prosperous families often lament how wealth has negatively affected their children.

Greed, selfishness, and mistrust can strain relationships in families of any economic status.

At LDS Philanthropies, we help families prepare to receive eternal blessings using the principles of philanthropy. Journey to Become is a 15-minute documentary film about one family’s challenge of passing on not only their wealth, but their values to their children. During this process Scott is horrified to discover that Becky is in an abusive relationship with her boyfriend Joe.

EP - Cipher on the Snow (1974)
Running time: 21 minutes

"Cipher in the Snow" is a poignant and thought-provoking Mormon short film released in 1974, directed by Kieth Merrill. The story revolves around a tragic event that leaves a profound impact on those who witness it.

The film begins with a young boy named Cliff, portrayed by Bruce Kimball, who is depicted as a quiet and withdrawn student struggling to connect with his peers. Despite his attempts to reach out and make friends, Cliff is often met with indifference and even cruelty from his classmates.

One winter morning, Cliff's teacher discovers him sitting silently at his desk, unresponsive and seemingly lifeless. The school staff and students are shocked and saddened by Cliff's sudden death, and they struggle to understand what could have led to such a tragic outcome.

Through a series of flashbacks and interviews with Cliff's classmates and teachers, the film pieces together the events leading up to his death. It becomes apparent that Cliff's isolation and loneliness were profound, and despite the efforts of some individuals to reach out to him, he remained deeply troubled and disconnected.

EP 138 - Children of Promise: Jesus in America (1980)
https://youtu.be/xYYe-ctRaw8
Running time: 14 minutes

Synopsis
Tells the story of two little children in Zarahemla during Book of Mormon times. One girl is a good Lamanite and she tells us that Jesus made her dark skin white because she was righteous. The filmstrip details Jesus' post-crucifixion appearance to the new world in which he anoints his disciples and heals the sick.

Film Background
Not an official church production
1980 filmstrip by Eternal Quest Productions. Filmstrip #11 of 12, “Jesus in America”. Dramatized telling of the Book of Mormon for children.

Email
[email protected]

Conclusion
This filmstrip is almost comically bizarre, but far from being out in left field, it represents the culture and ideals of a generation; my generation when I was growing up in the church.
While The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints once taught that native people in North America and South America were the descendants of the Lamanites and that the Book of Mormon was a history of their ancestors, the church has now backed off of that teaching and says that no one knows who the descendants of the Lamanites are today.

Final Thoughts
Children of Promise is blatantly racist, anachronistic, historically laughably inaccurate, and particularly harmful for young persons with disabilities.
