EP 85: Joseph Smith The Man (1980)
Link: https://youtu.be/TECB8tMdiPE
Running time: 8 minutes
Rating: not rated
Genre: Religious drama

This review works best if you have seen this film before, though that is not required. we will watch the short together while I provide insightful, and occasionally irreverent commentary.
Spoiler alert

Synopsis
A group of children come to Lethe Tatge's home to hear about the Prophet Joseph Smith.

Film Background
technically speaking, this is not an official church video
this film was brought to us by the visual transit authority under the direction of famed Mormon filmmaker TC Christiansen

please let me know your thoughts on this film by sending me an email to
[email protected]

Conclusion
Love and acceptance is found when you believe what I believe, when you don’t question my metaphysical claims, when you find value in my cultural heritage, when you believe without evidence the same things that i believe without evidence, when you don’t ask me any challenging questions or point out inconsistencies in historical church narratives, when you keep sweet pray and obey

this is the final Mormon film to feature the legendary Lethe Tatge
https://youtu.be/BqcTzOwmVM4

Final Thoughts
The children in this film are doing what Mormon children are supposed to do, accept elders wisdom and marvel at how lucky they are to be born into the one true church

this film is a vehicle for mythologizing Joseph Smith, to make him larger than life, to make him a legend, to lionize him, it never deals with any of Joseph’s troubling legacy, much less bring it up, no sir

EP : That Which Was Lost (1969)
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fzkdiSYmiIQ

We will watch this short together while I provide insightful and occasionally irreverent commentary.

Running time: 27 minutes
Rating: PG
Genre: Religious Drama

Synopsis
As Rick becomes associated with hippies, the concern of an adviser and an unpleasant experience help him to realize the importance of some of the things he thought he could give up. Shows how love and persistence can bring back the "lost sheep."

Film Background
This is an official video produced by the COJCOLDS. Along with this version, a non-denominational cut and a secular cut were also produced. But I couldn’t find the other cuts video on the video library churchofjesuchrist.org

Email
[email protected]

Final thoughts
Only righteous members of the church like Larry can be counted on. Hippies are not to be trusted. Fathers need to prioritize time with their children.
The director of the short Wetzel O. Whitaker should have added the following subtitle to this movie: That which was lost: Be like Larry.

Saturday's Warrior (1989)
https://youtu.be/--w9bOGpi2s
Running time: 115 minutes

This review works best if you have seen this film before, though that is not required.
Spoiler alert

"Saturday's Warrior" (1989) brings to life the beloved stage production in a heartwarming cinematic experience that captivates audiences with its timeless themes and memorable music. Directed by Bob Williams and based on the original musical by Lex de Azevedo, this film adaptation takes viewers on a journey of faith, love, and destiny.

Set in the 1970s, the story follows a young couple, Jimmy and Julie, who are eager to begin their lives together but find themselves facing unexpected challenges and choices. As they navigate the complexities of family relationships, friendship, and personal aspirations, they learn valuable lessons about the importance of following one's heart and staying true to one's beliefs.

The film's greatest strength lies in its ability to resonate with audiences of all ages. The characters are relatable and endearing, each struggling with their own doubts and insecurities yet ultimately finding strength in their connections with one another. Whether it's the rebellious Jimmy, the compassionate Julie, or the wise patriarch Grandpa, every character contributes to the rich tapestry of the narrative, drawing viewers into their world and inviting them to share in their triumphs and tribulations.

Of course, no review of "Saturday's Warrior" would be complete without mentioning its unforgettable soundtrack. From the uplifting anthem "Humble Way" to the poignant ballad "One More Hour," the music elevates the storytelling, imbuing each scene with emotion and depth. Audiences will find themselves humming along to the catchy tunes long after the credits roll, a testament to the enduring legacy of the musical's score.

While some may dismiss "Saturday's Warrior" as a nostalgic relic of its time, its message of love, faith, and redemption remains as relevant today as it was over three decades ago. In an era marked by uncertainty and division, this film serves as a reminder of the power of unity and the resilience of the human spirit. Whether you're a longtime fan of the musical or experiencing it for the first time, "Saturday's Warrior" is a cinematic treasure that will leave you uplifted and inspired.

If you hold this movie high, it will be a lamp for your entertainment as well.
