Welcome brothers and sisters to Mormon Movie Reviews: Where LDS movie lovers belong!

Film Summary
"The First Vision" is a significant Mormon film released in 1976, directed by Kieth Merrill and starring Stewart Petersen. This historical drama chronicles a pivotal moment in the life of Joseph Smith, the founder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), known as the First Vision.

Set in the early 19th century, the film follows the experiences of Joseph Smith, a young farm boy living in upstate New York. Joseph is portrayed as a devout seeker of truth, grappling with questions about religion and searching for spiritual guidance.

One spring day in 1820, Joseph retreats to a secluded grove near his home to pray for guidance. It is there that he experiences a profound and life-changing vision. In a powerful and transcendent moment, Joseph is visited by God the Father and Jesus Christ, who appear to him in a pillar of light.

Overwhelmed by the divine presence, Joseph is filled with awe and wonder as he converses with the heavenly beings. In the midst of this sacred encounter, he receives personal revelation and guidance, setting him on a path that will ultimately lead to the restoration of the true gospel of Jesus Christ.

"The First Vision" vividly depicts the emotional and spiritual impact of this profound experience on Joseph Smith. It portrays his struggle to reconcile his vision with the skepticism and disbelief of those around him, including his own family and community.

Through stunning cinematography and heartfelt performances, the film captures the essence of Joseph Smith's journey of faith and the significance of the First Vision in the history of the LDS Church. It emphasizes themes of divine communication, personal revelation, and the importance of seeking truth.

Overall, "The First Vision" serves as a powerful testament to the faith and conviction of Joseph Smith, as well as the enduring legacy of his visionary experience in shaping the beliefs and practices of the Mormon faith.

Movie Summary

In 1881 David Whitmer seeks the signature of Gen. Alexander W. Doniphan on an affidavit attesting to his honesty and integrity, with plans to have it published in the local paper in Richmond Missouri with a statement refuting that he had denied his witness that an angel had shown him the gold plates from which the Book of Mormon was translated.

Whitmer recalls the translation of the book in 1829 while Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery stayed at the Whitmer family home in Fayette, New York. After praying together, an angel shows them the plates. All three are later excommunicated from the church, but as Whitmer relates, Oliver Cowdery and Martin Harris testified to the end of their lives to the truthfulness of what they witnessed (dying in 1850 and 1875 respectively and after re-joining the church).

Doniphan, a lawyer, signs the document and says that he would hate to argue in court against such strong evidence.

Video Summary

In 1899 aging Mormon Prophet Lorenzo Snow is deeply troubled by the Church's crippling debt, left over from the anti-polygamy crusades of the 1880s. He feels prompted to travel to St. George, Utah which is experiencing a tremendous drought, and while preaching in the Tabernacle there he receives a revelation to re-emphasize the law of tithing as the solution to the Church's financial troubles.

Furthermore, in the video, he promises rain in St. George if they will faithfully pay tithing. A tithing reformation begins and throughout the Utah territory pioneer settlements, and eventually St.

George receives rain and the Church climbs out of debt by the late 1960s.
